He paused, his gray eyes locking straight onto Margaret. “Phoebe’s just a failed prototype. B-class DNA’s too fragile-it can’t handle being eaten alive by insectoid cells. But what if it was S-class? Or… SSS-class?”

A cold chill shot straight down Margaret’s spine.

Greven never wanted a political marriage. And he didn’t care about calming his spiritual power outbursts, either.

What he wanted was her-her body, the only perfect SSS-class test subject in the entire galaxy.

No wonder he’s too scared to step foot on the front lines, but bold enough to yank Harold right out of prison. This lunatic wants to build himself an immortal, unkillable body.

“Nice plan, really ambitious.” Margaret’s mouth twisted into a sharp, cold smile. “He wants to use me as his lab rat? He’d better hope he’s strong enough. I’m not gonna go down easy.”

Cheiron said, “You can’t go to that royal dinner.”

Margaret shot back, “Why the hell not? He’s already ready to grab me. If I don’t go scope him out, how am I supposed to strike back?”

Cheiron pinched the bridge of his nose, frustrated. “Greven’s a total, unhinged lunatic. He broke Harold out of prison and turned Phoebe into that thing. Whatever he’s planning, it’s way bigger than we thought. Walking into that palace right now? You’d be a lamb to the slaughter.”

“He’d try something with everyone watching?” Margaret shot back.

“He won’t grab you out in the open. But he’s got a million ways to make you ‘have to’ stay-a sudden spiritual power outburst, an unknown attack that leaves you needing royal protection.” Cheiron frowned, his gaze pinned tight to hers.

Margaret stepped back two paces, her voice softening but steady. “You can run from trouble, but you can’t hide forever. He’s already set his sights on me. Every step I take back, he takes ten forward. I’d rather face him head-on than sit around waiting for him to stab me in the back.”

Cheiron didn’t say anything.

After a long, heavy silence, he finally spoke, “Fine. If we’re going, we go prepared,”

The hovercar lifted smoothly into the air, leaving the Academy of Sciences behind. The cabin was silent, save for the faint hum of wind rushing past the windows.

“This whole thing’s blown up way too big in public.” Margaret broke the silence, still turning over everything they’d just seen. “A guy like Greven? He’s already got a backup plan ready. Phoebe’s not gonna take him down-not by herself. If we wanna actually shake his foundation, we need a full paper trail. Better yet, we need Harold alive.”

Cheiron said, “No. Even if we catch Harold red-handed, it won’t be enough to take him down. Lesley’s condition? She’s not gonna live long enough to see Norman grow up. Greven is first in line for the throne. Nothing’s gonna change that.”

He set the autopilot from the driver’s seat and turned to face Margaret. “I work for the Academy of Sciences. I can’t say for sure how deep Greven’s reach goes across the Empire. He’s even got people inside the Security Bureau pulling strings. Otherwise, there’s no way Phoebe could’ve vanished without a trace.”

Margaret read between the lines, Cheiron was out in the open, and Greven was working in the shadows— there was only so much Cheiron could do on his own. He didn’t say it out loud, but the message was clear: she needed backup from a third party. And there was only one person for the job-Baar.

Cheiron said, “Baar’s the Commander of the Federal Military-he’s got real, hard military power. Even Greven’s craziest goons won’t mess with him lightly. They can’t risk sparking a fight between the Federation and the Empire. And with Baar’s raw strength? He’s the best safety net we’ve got right now.”

“And as for those twins from the black market… Cheiron paused for a beat, tapping a steady, quiet rhythm on his knee with one finger. “They made the first move to play nice. We can feed them a few small details, trade for intel. Black market networks dig up dirt that the official channels never can.”

Margaret nodded. Desperate times called for desperate measures-she played every card she had. She had access to some of the best resources in the galaxy, and she might as well put them all to work for her. Trying to go it alone? That was just stupid.
