Margaret stared at the half-cup on the floor, pleased with the result. If she used this thing on someone’s neck, it would get the job done easily-no messy blood splatter, no fuss.
She turned her attention to the clear vial in her other hand.
This was the High-Grade Purification Agent. The liquid inside glowed with a faint silver-blue hue, like some kind of glowing deep-sea algae. The vial had no labels on it at all, and it gave off a strange, warm tingle when she held it.
Margaret tucked the vial into the gene-locked drawer of her nightstand.
She couldn’t give it to Baar right now there was no way to explain where it came from.
On top of that, if Greven found out Baar’s poison had vanished overnight, it would tip him off far too early. She couldn’t afford to alert him before she was ready.
She had to choose the right moment. Ideally, she’d find a plausible excuse to cure Baar just before the royal banquet-something that would make the antidote’s source seem completely normal.
Morning sunlight streamed through the villa’s floor-to-ceiling windows into the study, sliced into neat strips by the blinds.
At the long conference table, Baar sat with his legs crossed, his combat boots propped up on the edge. Cheiron sat across from him, scrolling through a hologram on his Holo-bracelet, his glasses glinting with cold light. Timothy perched on the arm of the single sofa next to Margaret, holding a mug of freshly warmed milk.
Margaret pushed the mug Timothy held out to her away. She projected an unsigned data packet into the center of the table.
“The royal family’s underground containment unit holds a bunch of failed test subjects,” she said, getting straight to the point. She swiped her finger across the hologram, and a long list of names appeared in front of everyone. “A-class, S-class-even a few SS-class. Their statuses all say things like mental outburst, genetic contamination, insectoid infection, or rogue test subject.”
The study went quiet for a few seconds.
Even Timothy fell silent, staring hard at the screen.
Margaret leaned back in her chair. “At the banquet, Greven’s gonna cause a security breach and let all these things loose. He wants to force me to purify them live on the Starnet broadcast.”
Cheiron pushed his glasses up. He didn’t ask where she’d gotten the intel. “It’s maximum pressure. Either way, he holds all the cards.”
He went on, “If you save them, he gets free rein to collect data on your spiritual power-makes it easier for him to capture you later. If you don’t, the Empire’s media will paint you as a cold-hearted monster. They’ll

Margaret let out a cold laugh. She tapped her finger on the name of one SS-class mutant. “The worst part is, none of these people can be saved, Greven never planned on letting them go back alive. They’re all hard proof of his illegal live experiments. He’s gonna get rid of the evidence-and use me to take the fall at the same time.”
Cheiron nodded. “Their genetic chains are already shattered. Add in the high-concentration insectoid poison, and even if you drained every drop of your spiritual power, you’d only buy them a few extra gasps of air.”
Timothy cursed under his breath. “That bastard’s shameless. My Lady, what do we do? We can’t just sit here and take the heat. Want me to hit up the dark web? Blow up the broadcast towers before the banquet?”
Margaret picked up her water glass and took a sip. “The Empire’s been hyping this up for two weeks. If we cut the signal, it’ll just make us look guilty. He built the stage-so we’re gonna get up there and perform. He wants to watch me save people? Fine. I’ll put on a show.”
Baar dropped his legs off the table. His combat boots hit the carpet with a dull thud.
He stared right at her. “Are you insane? Those things are highly contagious. If you get too close and the poison backfires on you? I’m not letting you do this.”
Margaret brushed a finger over the silver stud in her left ear. “I know what I’m doing.”
Those test subjects had been soldiers once. Greven had tortured them into this state, and now he was gonna squeeze every last drop of use out of them before they died.
She couldn’t save their lives. But she could make their deaths count. She’d use their blood to nail Greven to the wall for good.
Margaret turned to Timothy. “Timothy, can you get your hands on military-grade micro holographic recorders?”
Timothy perked up immediately. “How small do you want them? I can get nanometer-sized ones, no problem.”
“Small enough to hide in a button or a brooch,” Margaret said. “I’ll get as close to the test subjects as I can at the banquet. Greven wants a galaxy-wide broadcast? We’ll give him crystal-clear close-ups of everything.”
