Primo was salivating in her head. “Host, Quentin’s cooking talent is wasted out here. He should’ve opened
a restaurant.”
Margaret ignored it, dried her hands, and sat down at the table.
The courtyard gate swung open and Tyrone strode in, his green eyes glinting with triumph.
“Good news.” He pulled out a chair. “They fell for it. Prime Planet took the bait completely.
Quentin shot him a glance but said nothing. He slid the plate of grilled meat in front of Margaret.
“Tell me everything.” Margaret picked up her fork and stabbed a piece.
Tyrone leaned in. “Late last night, I had my people plant the bait. We planted that batch of flawed experimental residue at the largest black-market auction house on Prime Planet-the stuff with the incomplete formula. That place draws every kind of underworld scum. Lesley’s spies have been working on it for years. Sure enough, within half an hour, an anonymous buyer swept up the whole lot. Tracking data puts it straight at a secure, underground Royal Intelligence research lab.”
Margaret bit into the meat. Crisp on the outside, tender within, perfectly seared. “And Lesley?”
“Panicking.” Tyrone laughed and sat down. “Royal Intelligence worked through the night and reconstructed about seventy percent of the formula. Here’s the clever part-that seventy percent lines up almost perfectly with the Spiritual Power Stabilizer Lesley takes every day. The only extra ingredient was a purified dose of Erosion Herb.”
Erosion Herb was a high-grade neurotoxin that slowly eroded neural pathways. Odorless and tasteless, it would deplete one’s spiritual power with long-term intake, leading ultirnately to brain death.
The door opened and Cheiron stepped out, dark circles under his eyes from a sleepless night. He walked to the table and set his bio-terminal down.
“I gave it a little nudge from my end.” His voice was slightly hoarse. “At three in the morning, Central Hospital’s classified archives got hit. The hack was subile, but I left a backdoor open. They made off with an encrypted medical report.”
Margaret looked up at him. “Lesley’s?”
“Yes. Cheiron poured himself a glass of water. “The report shows trace Erosion Herb toxin in the patient’s system. Dated six months ago. The treating physician listed is Greven’s most trusted confidant,”
Tyrone snapped his fingers, pleased. “Perfect! The formula plus the medical report-the evidence chain is airtight. Lesley’s been bedridden for years, paranoid as hell. She’s probably spiraling into full-blown paranoia right now.”
Margaret finished her food and wiped her hands. They moved fast and left no loose ends. Every piece had clicked into place,
“Any word from Timothy?” she asked.
“I was just getting to that.” Tyrone leaned forward. “That kid’s a natural at this. He leaked every financial

record from Greven’s lab, highlighting the massive payments for Erosion Herb. Right now, all of Starnet is asking the same question. What was Greven doing with that much poison?”
Margaret watched the data stream across the screen, her fingers tapping a steady rhythm on the table.
“Lesley won’t sit still.” She laid out her reasoning. “Greven’s dead, but her people are still in power. The moment Lesley convinces herself Greven was poisoning her, her first move will be to purge them all.”
She’d barely finished when Tyrone’s bio-terminal flared red with a critical priority alert. He opened it, scanned the message, and his eyes went wide.
“Looks like you were right. Ten minutes ago, the Royal Guards surrounded the residences of three cabinet ministers. All Greven loyalists. Lesley had them stripped of rank on charges of treason. They’re being sent to the Imperial maximum-security penitentiary.”
Cheiron’s hand stopped midair. “Those three hold command authority over nearly a third of Prime Planet’s City Defense forces. If Lesley moves this fast, she’ll push them into open rebellion.”
“They’ve already rebelled.” Tyrone scrolled to the bottom. “City Defense is refusing to hand over command. They’re trading fire with the Royal Guards in the Third District. Prime Planet is under full martial law. The starport’s locked down.”
Civil war had come even faster than Margaret had predicted. Lesley, blinded by paranoia over being poisoned, had struck first. Greven’s old guard, fighting for their lives, had no choice but to hit back. The Empire’s core was tearing itself apart from the inside.
