Timothy saw the whole thing from across the table. The smile never left his face, but his fork hit his plate with a sharp, sudden clink.

The meal passed quietly.

Norman set down his fork, wiped his mouth with his napkin, and slid off his chair.

“Goodnight, everyone.”

Polite. he made the rounds before padding up the stairs on his own short legs.

The adults left at the table exchanged glances.

Timothy leaned back, spinning a dinner knife between his fingers, the blade catching the light. “This kid really doesn’t need anyone looking after him? Not even a helper bot?”

“He said no himself.” Margaret drained the last of her water and stood. “Let him be for now. New place, too many people-it’ll just overwhelm him.”

A room full of killers, politicians, and corporate sharks, and not a single ounce of parenting experience between them..

A dull thud sounded from the second floor. Not loud, but sharp against the quiet of the villa. Something heavy had hit the ground.

Tyrone moved fastest. Margaret registered the sound and he was already up the stairs. She followed close behind, Timothy and Cheiron right on her heels.

The bathroom water was still running. Tyrone stood in the doorway, hand on the frame. He’d looked inside-just one glance-and stopped cold. His green eyes narrowed sharply.

“What’s going on?” Timothy stepped up behind him and tried to push past.

“Don’t.” Tyrone threw an arm across the doorway and blocked him. He turned toward Margaret, just reaching the corridor. “Ms, Greene, you should go in. The little one fell.”

His voice had shed every trace of its usual lazy amusement,

Margaret walked forward. Tyrone shifted aside to let her through, then planted himself at the door again,

Cheiron and Timothy exchanged a look, said nothing, and waited outside.

The bathroom was thick with steam. Norman was curled on the tile beside the non-slip mat, the showerhead on the floor, warm water spraying everywhere. He had his knees pulled tight to his chest, his small body hunched into a tight, trembling ball, both arms wrapped around himself.

His shoulders were shaking in short, hiccuping shudders. Not a sound came out.

“Norman.” Margaret walked over, shut off the water, and pulled a towel from the rack. She crouched down beside him.

Norman looked up. His gold eyes were swimming, the rims red and raw, but he didn’t make a sound. When he saw it was Margaret, the rigid tension in his small frame eased just a fraction.

In the palace, bathing had always been handled by dedicated attendants. Tonight, alone, in an unfamiliar bathroom, his short legs had lost their footing and he’d gone down hard.

“Where did you hit? Let me see.” Margaret wrapped him in the towel.

Norman bit down on his lower lip. A struggle flickered through his gold eyes. Then, slowly, his small arms loosened and fell away from his body.

The air went still.

Norman was a female.

So that was it. That was why Lesley had guarded this child so fiercely. Why even the personal attendants had been handpicked. Why Greven the presumed sole heir, the crown prince with his position seemingly secure–had resorted to live experimentation to build his political capital, had poisoned his own mother. He’d been racing against time.

Cheiron had explained it once. In the Imperial line of succession, females held absolute priority. Lesley had only three children, but she also had a younger brother. The Cabinet had been conspiring with him behind the scenes for years.

If Norman were just an ordinary male prince, the Cabinet could ally with Lesley’s brother, invoke “the young heir is unfit to rule,” and overturn the will to install him on the throne.

But if Norman was a female-then by law, the succession was unbreakable. Not Lesley’s brother, not anyone, could leapfrog a female heir.
