Norman nodded obediently and wrapped her small arms around Margaret’s neck. “Margaret, you’re so nice.” The little girl’s voice was soft as silk.
Margaret patted her back.
Nice? She’d been handed this mess, so she figured she’d go big. Tear out every schemer who came for her and the people around her, root and branch.
Outside the door, the three men stood in a row.
Tyrone leaned against the wall, silent. Timothy had his brow furrowed with impatience. Cheiron was even holding a medical kit. Only Quentin had stayed downstairs, calmly clearing the dining table since the housekeeper had already gone home for the night.
When Margaret emerged with a freshly pajamaed Norman in tow, all three men’s gazes locked on them at once.
“What happened?” Timothy stepped forward, his gaze sweeping over Norman. “Where’d you hit? Do we need a hospital? Is the anti-slip system in this villa defective? I’ll have someone tear it all out and redo it
tomorrow.”
Cheiron opened his medical kit. “Let me take a look.”
“No need.” Margaret blocked his hand. “The floor was wet. He bumped his knee. No broken skin. Kids are fragile he just got a scare.”
Norman played along perfectly, ducking behind Margaret’s legs and peeking out with only her gold eyes showing.
Tyrone’s smile turned knowing. “Just as I thought. Bath time for kids is an accident waiting to happen. From now on, this kind of thing really should be handled by you personally, Ms. Greene. We clumsy men. aren’t exactly… convenient.”
He bit down on the word “convenient” with deliberate weight.
Margaret glanced at him.
Sharp people really do make everything easier.
“Alright, everyone clear out.” Margaret took Norman’s hand and led her toward the bed. “I’ll get him to sleep. The rest of you, go do whatever you were doing.”
Timothy’s mouth pulled into a reluctant pout, but with Norman fresh off a fall, he didn’t dare kick up a fuss. Cheiron dragged him off, and Timothy kept glancing back over his shoulder the whole way down the corridor.
The hallway quieted,
Margaret tucked Norman into bed and pulled the covers snug around her. “Sleep.”
Norman closed her eyes.

Margaret turned off the main light, leaving only a dim nightlight glowing, and stepped out of the room.
Tyrone hadn’t left. He leaned against the railing at the end of the corridor, gazing out the window at the nightscape. He turned at the sound of her footsteps..
“Ms. Greene.” His voice was low. “This whole arrangement carries far more risk than I bargained for.”
Margaret walked over and rested both hands on the railing, looking down at the courtyard lights below, “What, getting scared?”
“Not scared. Just thinking-that little… little one plays her cards awfully close to her chest. Lesley was ruthless too.” He didn’t say it outright, but they both knew exactly what he meant.
“Does that come with a bonus?” Tyrone tilted his head, grinning like a profiteer.
Margaret turned toward him, her tone light. “She’ll help clear the name of Terminus Planet. As for Senro Pavilion-there’s nothing to be done. Wanted posters are already everywhere.”
Tyrone’s eyes brightened. “Is she clearing my name, or are you?”
“Is there a difference? She’s the new emperor. I’m the Regent standing behind her. And what I promised you before—those two spots at my side still stand.”
Tyrone’s grin froze for just a moment. “I’ll take the night watch. Not even a mosquito gets onto this floor.” The words came fast
Margaret nodded and turned back toward the master bedroom.
Her Holo-bracelet buzzed against her wrist. It was a message from Baar.
“The Aegis Squad has been deployed. They’ll take over perimeter security at the villa by 9 a.m. tomorrow. Once this mess is over, I’m coming back to launch a mosquito extermination operation.”
Margaret stared at the dry, deadpan message on the screen and couldn’t stop the laugh that escaped her.
This man wears his jealousy on his sleeve. Not a single attempt to hide it.
The Aegis Squad was her personal armed unit, assigned by the Federal Military-A-class males and above, every last one of them handpicked and trained by Baar himself.
Their weapons, their logistics, even their steep annual bonuses were covered entirely by the Federation budget. But their chain of command answered only to her.
She tapped out a reply on the virtual keyboard. “Commander Iverson, impressive reach. Even mosquitoes fall under your jurisdiction now?”
