Cheiron’s brow furrowed slightly. A flicker of confusion passed through his eyes. He thought for a few seconds, then looked up. “Ms. James… Which one is that?”

Margaret paused. Then she smiled.

“Wow, Host,” Primo ehimed in her mind. “I kind of admire Phoebe’s nerve. Cheiron doesn’t even know who she is, and she said she has some connection with Mr. Jewett. And when he.opened the door, she didn’t even flinch. That takes guts.”

Margaret ignored it and just looked at Cheiron. “Never mind. Just asking.”

Cheiron looked at her, still a little confused. But he didn’t press. So he just nodded.

“By the way,” Cheiron said, “there’s something I should tell you.”

Margaret snapped out of her thoughts and looked at him.

Cheiron said, “This house used to have a housekeeper. He was with me for many years, but he got old. He went back to his hometown a while ago to retire.”

Margaret nodded, waiting.

“The new housekeeper hasn’t arrived yet,” Cheiron continued. “So for now, there are only the two of us in this house.”

“Ooh.” Primo’s voice buzzed in her mind, with a slightly excited edge. “A man and a woman alone under one roof.”

Margaret cursed, “Shut up.”

But she had to admit, the news did catch her off guard.

Cheiron kept his eyes on her, as if waiting for her reaction-checking whether she would be uncomfortable with the arrangement.

Margaret raised an eyebrow. Then she smiled.

“Okay,” she said teasingly. “I’ll remember to lock my door at night.”

To her surprise, Cheiron smiled, too.

It was a faint smile-just the corners of his mouth turning up a little. But it made his usually expressionless face come alive for a moment. Before Margaret could enjoy it, he turned and walked inside. She had no choice but to grab her suitcase and follow.

They walked through the living room, then down a long hallway. They twisted and turned for a while before finally stopping in front of a door. Margaret thought they had arrived, but Cheiron pushed the door open, revealing an even longer corridor with four or five closed doors on each side.
