Chapter 24 She Was Doing Alright

Chapter 24 She Was Doing Alright

Margaret shook herself back to the present. She grabbed her suitcase, pushed the bedroom door open and said under her breath. “Nothing. Just thinking this is nice

The room was spotless-a large bed, wide windows, a tidy desk, and even an en-suite bathroom She wheeled her suitcase into the corner before collapsing onto the mattress.

After lying there for a few minutes, she sat up and pulled out her new neural interface As soon as she powered it on, an unread email notification popped up. She tapped it open. It was from the Psychological Services Department at Prime Planet Central Hospital.

The message read: “Per the evaluation signed by your attending physician, Director Cheiron Jewett, the hospital has determined your current psychological state to be stable and your emotional health within normal parameters. No clinical indication for continued counseling was found. Therefore, your post- divorce support sessions are hereby formally concluded.”

Margaret raised an eyebrow. Cheiron worked fast. He’d said it wasn’t necessary that morning, and by the afternoon, he’d already closed her file.

“Host,” Primo chirped, “does that mean we don’t have to go back to the hospital?”

“Yep.”

“So we won’t get to see Cheiron’s handsome face every day?”

Margaret couldn’t help but laugh at how wistful he sounded. “We’re literally living in his house. You think you won’t see him?”

Primo giggled softly before going quiet.

Margaret removed the neural interface and headed into the bathroom for a shower. She hadn’t had a proper one in days-not since staying at her ex’s place.

Even though that house was big, the room they’d given her didn’t have its own bathroom. The original host used to save up credits to visit a public shower facility down the block, but Margaret couldn’t bring herself to do it. The idea of stripping down around strangers made her skin crawl.

So for the past few nights, she’d made do with quick wipe-downs and called it a night-no hot water, no real shower.

But the moment she pushed the bathroom door open, she froze.

This wasn’t just a bathroom. It was like a private spa-floor-to-ceiling windows, a deep jacuzzi tub, a walk- in rain shower, and a wall-sized smart mirror that looked like ordinary glass until you turned it on, then it doubled as a display screen.

Margaret stood in the doorway for a solid few seconds.

“Host,” Primo whispered, almost reverently, “I want to live here too.”

You already live in my head

I still want to. Primo said. “Let me enjoy it, too. And Host-all the appliances here are smart voler controlled

Margaret raised an eyebrow and tested it. “Lights on.”

The lights came on.

Margaret continued, “Water temperature to 107 degrees.”

Water started pouring out of the faucet, steam rising.

Margaret nodded, satisfied. She was about to undress when her hand touched her collar, and she remembered something. She called out, “Primo.”

“I’m here, Host.” Primo’s voice sounded immediately, obedient.
