Late that night, the villa lay still and silent. A small unmarked stealth ship touched down silently on open ground not far from the villa gates.
The hatch slid open, and Baar dropped into the darkness, striding forward in long, silent steps. He’d alerted no one, reining in his SSS-class spiritual pressure completely to keep his arrival undetectable. He slipped into the villa under cover of night.
He’d come back late, stealing away from Federation business without a word. But there was no hiding from the four other SSS-class males already inside.
In the east wing on the second floor, Cheiron sat at his desk, turning a page of a medical report between his fingers.
The moment Baar stepped into the living room below. Cheiron’s hand paused. Something dark flickered across his gray eyes. He said nothing. He simply turned the page and let that unwanted presence draw closer.
In the room closest to the courtyard, Quentin had just stepped out of the shower. A loose bathrobe hung low on his hips, exposing the sharp, defined ridges of his abs.
At the sound of movement below, his crimson eyes shifted toward Tyrone, who lay nearby with his eyes still closed. Tyrone didn’t bother opening them. One corner of his mouth tugged up in a lazy, knowing smirk.
The black market twins said nothing.
And in the room closest to Margaret’s, Timothy stood behind the door. His knuckles whitened around the metal handle, veins standing out along the back of his hand. Those blue eyes, usually bright, had turned dark and stormy. He wanted to throw the door open and drive Baar straight back out into the night.
But he stood there a long time, hand locked on the handle. In the end, he let go.
He knew why the Cabinet hadn’t dared make a move. He knew why Gideon had signed that loyalty pledge without a fight. A large part of it was the Federal Military applying pressure.
Baar-that mad serpent-had put the entire Federation’s military might behind Margaret. She had to be exhausted. The last thing Timothy wanted was to kick up a scene now and get on her nerves.
The hallway was silent. Baar walked it in combat boots without making a sound, then turned the handle on the door Margaret had deliberately left unlocked.
Primo had been dutifully reporting Baar’s approach from the moment his ship touched down.
Margaret had just showered and changed into a silk nightgown. She was leaning against the headboard, scrolling through the news on Starnet. She looked up to find the man already standing at her bedside.
The room was lit only by a single dim lamp. Baar stared down at her, his gaze locked on her face.
It had been over half a month. Deep dark circles shadowed the skin beneath his eyes, and stubble roughened his jaw. He looked like he’d come straight from the front.

“You’re back.” Margaret looked up at him.

Baar didn’t answer. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them. He was too tall, and his broad shoulders blocked the lamplight, casting her entirely in shadow.
There was a fire burning in his chest, tangled up with something he didn’t want to admit was resentment.
His firepower was the steel at her back, the reason no one had dared move against her. He’d contributed more than anyone. And yet he hadn’t been the one standing beside her.
He’d watched the galaxy-wide livestream from his flagship. He’d watched her, radiant and untouchable. place that crown on the young emperor’s head-with Cheiron standing right beside her, in the spot where he should have been. It had eaten him alive.
Baar wasn’t built for complicated emotions. The sting of being sidelined had already burned through what little patience he had left. He was a soldier-straightforward and direct. He took ground by force, and now that he was back, he intended to reclaim what was his in the only way he knew how.
“They were all with you.” His voice came out rough, grated out between clenched teeth. “I wasn’t.”
