Baar finally stopped. He pulled back just enough to wipe the blood from the corner of his mouth with his thumb. He stared down at her, gold eyes smoldering, no trace of anger at the bite. If anything, he looked more worked up than before.

“You bite like that again and I might just lose all control.” Baar’s voice came out ragged, barely more than a

rasp.

“You’re the one who bit me; don’t play the victim.” Margaret glared at him and swiped at her own lips. “You come back and the first thing you do is this. What’s wrong with you?”

Baar didn’t argue. His gaze dropped to her mouth, swollen from the kiss, and his throat bobbed.

A small black snake slithered out from his sleeve and coiled its way up his arm to her shoulder. It nuzzled against the curve of her neck, flicking its red tongue.

Spirit beasts were more honest than their masters. The little snake wound its tail around a strand of her hair. shamelessly fawning, as if making up for all the days its master had been away.

Margaret stroked the cool scales, and most of her irritation dissolved on the spot. She looked at the dark shadows beneath Baar’s eyes and knew he’d spent days and nights on the border. He had turned straight around and snuck back just to see her.

“Go shower.” She pointed at the bathroom. “You reek of sweat.”

Baar didn’t move.

“Disgusted with me?” He raised an eyebrow, a dangerous edge creeping into his voice.

“Yeah. Disgusted.” Margaret pushed him off and headed for the bed. “Shower or not? If not, get out and go back to your own room.”

Baar watched her retreating figure, his mouth pressing into a hard line. He crossed the distance in a few strides, grabbed her from behind, and lifted her clean off her feet.

Margaret’s legs swung into empty air. “What the hell are you doing?!”

“Showering.” Baar carried her toward the bathroom without a flicker of hesitation. “Together.”

“Like hell! Who said anything about together!” She thrashed and beat at his shoulders with her fists, which did about as much damage as a few light scratches.

“You just said I stink.” He kicked the bathroom door open and slammed it shut behind them. He pinned her against the vanity, his gold eyes blazing. “If you help me wash, I won’t stink anymore.”

He was impossibly unreasonable.

The bathroom door locked. The rush of water drowned out everything else.

The little black snake was left outside, curled into a dejected linle coil beside the door crack.

Morning light slipped through the gap in the curtains, cutting a thin, bright stripe across the carpet.

Margaret opened her eyes and stared at the plaster molding on the ceiling for a long moment, her brain still catching up. Her back ached. Her legs were jelly. She didn’t even have the strength to lift an arm.

The space beside her was already empty, the blankets twisted into a heap, the sheets a crumpled mess. The air still carried traces of the night before.

That mad serpent.

Margaret rolled over. The shower had run for most of the night. The edge of the vanity had dug hard and cold into her back, and just thinking about it made her lower back throb all over again.

Baar was a man who gave orders with precision on the battlefield, but in this he operated on pure instinct and zero technique. His only advantage was stamina, and that he had in excess.

The little black snake had spent the night tapping its tail against the door in a frantic, rapid patter while Baar. gold eyes burning fever-bright, pinned her waist and took her apart.

“Host, good morning.” Primo’s mechanical voice surfaced in her head, dripping with mischief. “Sleep well?”

Margaret shot it a silent, withering glare.
