Blue light flickered through the office as the pixelated mosaic on the screen slowly dissolved, revealing line after line of bold black text. No decorative formatting. Just data. Just statements,
The first thing that appeared was a holographic botanical scan,
Against a deep blue background, a single plant floated in perfect stillness. Six translucent petals flared outward from the center, and a faint luminescence pulsed from its core. Even as a projection, the vitality radiating from it was undeniable. Beside the image, the species name glowed in crimson: “Starbloom.”
“Starbloom. Cheiron adjusted his glasses and leaned in, his eyes tracking across the molecular breakdown displayed beside the scan. “A species unique to Earth. According to this file, it can directly restore a female’s spiritual realm.”
In this world, spiritual power was the lifeline of every beastman, male or female. But a female’s spiritual realm was different. The stronger her spiritual energy, the longer her lifespan-and the more frenzied males she could soothe. If that energy ran dry, the only thing waiting for her was genetic collapse, a slow descent into systemic breakdown, and death.
Margaret swiped across the screen, scanning the clinical projections beneath the scan. “It says here that high-concentration starbloom extract has a measurable probability of triggering genetic ascension in lower-ranked females.” She read the fine bold print aloud before turning to Cheiron. “You’re the top scientist in the galaxy. Does any of this actually hold up?”
Cheiron didn’t answer right away. He pulled up the enzymatic reaction chains linked to the file, his gaze cutting rapidly across the formulas.
“Theoretically, it’s sound.” He straightened, and his voice took on the measured gravity of a physician. “A female’s rank barrier is, at its core, a gene lock. If starbloom contains a specific radioactive isotope capable of forcing that lock open, then this is far more than a plant.”
It was a tool to create the perfect being.
Margaret let out a cold laugh, and suddenly everything made sense.
Earth had been a backward planet, barely worth a detour on any interstellar route, but it had been holding the one thing the entire galaxy would kill for. The outcome was inevitable..
She kept scrolling. Sure enough, the second section of the file laid out exactly why starbloom existed at all.
Earth had been able to produce a plant that defied every known biological law because of a single factor: a high-purity source core buried deep in the planet’s core.
The nobles had come running the moment they caught wind of it. They wanted the source core, and they wanted the starbloom it produced even more-something to curry favor with Lesley, who was already well past her prime.
What didn’t add up was the Federal Military Council. They never lifted a finger without profit, and yet they’d thrown themselves into this operation without hesitation.
“Those Federation lunatics-what did they want with a source core? How many females do they even have in the military? Were they planning to use it as decoration?” Margaret frowned.

Cheiron’s fingers tapped across the console and pulled up a financial ledger attached to the file. “They didn’t want the core.”
He pointed at several familiar names on the transaction logs. “Look at the backgrounds of these Federation council members. The corporations under their names control more than eighty percent of the galaxy’s rare botanical trade.”
Scarcity drove prices. The interstellar environment was brutal. Growing even a single blade of grass meant sinking a fortune into climate control.
Earth, by contrast, was a green planet with a complete ecosystem and over seventy percent vegetation coverage. If Earth’s flora ever flooded the interstellar market, those priceless potted plants in the council members’ portfolios would become worthless overnight.
“So the nobles wanted the power source, and the Federation wanted to eliminate the competition.” Margaret connected the two threads, the pieces clicking cleanly into place.
On the screen, a joint operation file appeared. Its title was stamped in stark, unsparing letters reading Operation Harvest.
