Margaret watched Blanc for a moment, then walked over to the dining table and sat down. She rested her chin on her hand and watched the round little robot bustle around the open kitchen. It rolled back and forth in front of the stove. Its movements were surprisingly smooth-not at all like an experiment.
Ten minutes later, a steaming plate of pasta sat in front of her. It had cabbage leaves on top. It actually looked pretty good-even though there were no other vegetables.
Margaret picked up her fork, twirled some pasta, and took a bite. It tasted good. She dug in without thinking about how those two cabbage leaves were probably worth a few hundred credits,
When she finished, she put her plate and fork in the dishwasher, said thank you to Blanc, and headed upstairs.
Behind her, Blanc’s electronic eyes had turned into two little crescent moons.
What Margaret didn’t know was what was happening outside the front door.
Cheiron had just stepped outside and was walking down the steps toward the garage when something in his peripheral vision caught his attention. Someone was standing by the flower bed not far away.
It was a female. She wore a light pink dress. She looked like the one from yesterday. She stood there-like she had just happened to be passing by, or like she had been waiting for a long time.
When she saw Cheiron come out, her eyes lit up. She hurried over. “Mr. Jewett,” she said, her voice soft and sweet, with a little breathlessness from her quick steps. She stopped in front of him and looked up. Her eyes glistened.
Cheiron stopped and looked at her. “Ma’am,” he said. “Can I help you?”
Phoebe bit her lower lip gently. It looked natural, like a reflex. She lowered her eyes, then lifted them again. She looked like she wanted to say something, but didn’t know how. “Mr. Jewett,” she said, her voice even softer now. “I just wanted to tell you something. My sister, Margaret… if she does anything wrong. please don’t be too hard on her.”

Cheiron looked at her. His brow was already furrowed. But he didn’t speak,
Phoebe grew a little uncomfortable under his gaze, but she pressed on. Her eyes reddened slightly. “Margaret… She has a good heart, She just isn’t very good with words sometimes. If she does something to upset you, please tell me. I… I would be willing to take responsibility for her.”
By now, tears were welling up in her eyes. Anyone who saw her would probably have felt sorry for her.
But Cheiron wasn’t just anyone.
Cheiron Frowned. He asked, “What’s your name?”
Phoebe froze, Her expression flickered for just an instant, but she quickly recovered. “I’m Phoebe James. Mr. Jewett. We’ve met before at a banquet-”
“Phoebe James?” Cheiron repeated the name, as if confirming something.

He suddenly remembered Margaret asking him yesterday if he knew someone named “Ms. James.”
So this is her.
But the expression on Margaret’s face when she had asked-disgust so strong she couldn’t even hide it.
“Is Margaret really your sister?” Cheiron asked.
Phoebe opened her mouth. She didn’t know how to answer, Strictly speaking, she had nothing to do with Margaret. That “my sister” line had just slipped out-she hadn’t thought anyone would care.
She stammered, “I know her. We…”
Cheiron didn’t listen anymore.
“If there’s nothing else,” he said, “I need to go.”
Phoebe wanted to say something more, but when she met Cheiron’s eyes, the words died in her throat. His gaze was calm and cold. It made her afraid to take another step closer.
Cheiron turned and walked away. His footsteps faded into the distance.
Phoebe stood there alone. Her fingernails dug into her palms.
Margaret went back to her room, closed the door, and pulled out her portable Holo-bracelet, She typed into the search bar, “Female ways to make money.”
The search results popped up instantly-dozens of pages. Margaret scrolled down, one by one. The more she read, the darker her face became.
What kind of garbage is this? Marry a powerful beastman husband? Scavenge in Prime Planet’s central district-make thousands of credits a day? Study at a top academy, graduate, join a research institute, and reach the peak of life?
She kept scrolling, feeling like she had stumbled into some kind of scam website.
“Host” Primo said, “you don’t need to rush, You still have a million credits in your account, right? If you’re careful, that can last a long time.”
“Be careful?” Margaret let out a cold laugh. “A cabbage costs 1,500 credits. How careful do you want me to bea
“You could eat more nutrient solution,” Primo said. “It’s cheap. Even a mid-grade nutrient solution is only a few dozen credits. I’ll fill you up.”
