Margaret blinked. “How would you know that?”

Cheiron rested his chin in his hand, his expression turning serious. “Seems like you didn’t look into my background too closely. I also hold a position at the National Academy of Sciences-didn’t you know?”

Margaret fell silent. She hadn’t done any research herself. Everything she knew had come from Primo.

Primo chimed in quietly, “I was too focused on the fact that he’s an SSS-class figure. I may have skimmed over the rest of his profile.”

Margaret ignored the comment and met Cheiron’s gaze. “Right, I see.”

Cheiron gave a brief nod, his tone shifting to something more professional. “I’ve been assigned to oversee your intake. When are you available? Would nine tomorrow morning work?”

Margaret hesitated. She hadn’t expected Cheiron to be the one handling her case, but in a way, it was better-at least he wasn’t a complete stranger.

“Is the testing process complicated?” she asked.

Cheiron studied her, his voice softening slightly. “Nothing to worry about. They’re mostly routine scans. Your psychic energy readings are… unusual, to say the least. The Central Intelligence needs to verify a few anomalies.

Margaret stayed quiet.

He continued, “In all documented history, there’s never been a case like yours. That’s why both the Central Intelligence and the Federal Beastkin Council are taking this seriously.”

“Understood,” she said with a nod. “Tomorrow works.”

“I’ll meet you in the lobby at eight-thirty,” Cheiron replied.

“Okay. Thanks”

He glanced at her, one eyebrow lifting almost playfully. “Don’t mention it. Who knows-maybe before long. I’ll end up as one of your husbands.”

Then he turned and walked away, his footsteps fading down the hall.

Margaret stood there for a long moment, completely still.

Then it finally sank in.

Was that guy joking? His face showed absolutely no expression.

“Host, Primo said, with a hint of subtle excitement. “What did he mean by that?”

Margaret walked back to the bed and sat down. “I don’t know. Maybe last night I made a joke at his expense, so he wanted to make one back.”

“I’m smiling because he doesn’t show any expression even when he’s joking.” Margaret leaned back and lay down on the bed. “Is that how all SSS-class big shots talk?”

Primo was quiet for a second. “You don’t think he was hinting at something?”

Margaret rolled her eyes. “Hinting at what? That he wants to be my husband? Come on. He was just stating a fact. Besides, he might want to, but that doesn’t mean I do.”

“Didn’t you say before that Cheiron wouldn’t be so bad?” Primo asked.

“That’s like picking the tallest dwarf.” Margaret stared at the ceiling. “Compared to a complete stranger, yeah, he’s better. But do I really want to get with him? Not really.”

Primo said, “Okay, then.”

She rolled over on the bed. “Enough thinking about it. It’s not like I can say no anyway. I have to go to the Academy of Sciences tomorrow. Let me figure out what to eat today.”

Margaret pushed open the door and headed out to hunt for food in the kitchen. She made her way down the hallway toward the living room. The house was huge, the hallways twisted and turned, and the walls were covered with paintings she didn’t understand. As she walked, Margaret sighed.

Cleaning a place like this must be a nightmare for the cleaners.

She wandered for a long time, got lost several times, and finally found the kitchen.

It was even bigger than she had imagined and had a stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher-everything you could want. And everything was spotless, gleaming-like it was never used.

Margaret walked straight to the fridge and opened it.

Then she fell silent.

Frozen pizzas, frozen sandwiches, frozen pasta, and a row of premium nutrient solutions sat neatly lined up on the second shelf. The packaging had labels like “S-Class Exclusive” and “Balanced Nutrition.”

Margaret kept digging, more and more hopeless. She knew fresh ingredients were crazy expensive in this world, but she had thought an SSS-class big shot’s house would at least have some stock.

But this fridge…

When she reached the very back, her fingers touched something round. She pushed aside the frozen and instant foods and saw a cabbage. It was fresh, green, still alive.

Margaret’s eyes lit up. She reached for it.

“Host,” Primo said, “that cabbage is worth about 1,500 credits in this world.”

Margaret’s hand stopped in midair. Then she quickly pulled it back.
