The room contained a few workbenches, several chairs, and a row of display monitors mounted on the wall. Two staff members were standing in front of the benches when the door opened, and both turned around in unison. One was a middle-aged guy in a white lab coat, grey streaking his temples, with thin wireframe glasses. He gave off major academic energy. The other was a middle-aged woman. Her hair was twisted into a bun, she wore a dark grey uniform, and she was scribbling something in a notebook with a pen in hand.

She glanced up at the sound of the door, her gaze settling on Margaret. Her expression was perfectly neutral. No nosiness, no judgment. She just gave Margaret a quick up and down, offered a slight nod, and that was that. Apparently that counted as a hello.

Margaret bobbed her head back and made a mental observation. Everyone in this place was super laid back, huh?

The woman went back to her notebook, jotted down a few more lines, then closed it with a crisp snap. She raised her eyes to Cheiron. “This is Ms. Greene?”

Cheiron gave a short nod. “That’s right.”

The woman didn’t add anything else. She simply gestured toward the opposite end of the room. “Ms. Greene, please stand over there.”

Margaret followed her cue. On the far side stood a massive sheet of clear glass. Actually, “wall” was more like it, with a small door built into it. Beyond that glass was a space that resembled an examination room, dominated by a machine planted right in the middle.

Margaret fixed her eyes on the contraption, struggling to put words to it. It was enormous, swallowing up nearly half the room. Its off white surface was crisscrossed with a tangled mess of pipes and cables, like something out of a heavy duty industrial facility. Right at its core sat a slightly elevated platform, barely large enough for a single person,

Something about it made Margaret think of the CT scanners from her original world. But this thing made those look like child’s play. Far more intricate, far larger, and far more intimidating.

Cheiron walked up beside her, following her gaze to the machine. His voice was calm with a touch of warmth. “Just stand on the platform. We’ll handle the rest.”

Margaret looked up at him. Cheiron turned his head too, those pale grey eyes carrying a hint of

reassurance,

Margaret looked away and took a deep breath, “Got it.” She walked toward the glass door, stepped through, and stopped in front of the machine. Tilting her head back, she stared up at all those pipes and metal rings. Her heart was thumping,

When she’d woken up that morning, Primo had told her that her spiritual power had stabilized at 38 class and probably wouldn’t go any higher. She’d been relieved back then. Figured today was just a formality. Walk in, get the test done, walk out with the report, and then go claim her credits, get her housing assignment, and start living that happy life eating fresh veggies every single day.

But now, standing in front of this machine, she suddenly felt a flicker of nerves. What if something went wrong?

She stepped up onto the small platform. It was solid beneath her feet, and a faint warmth radiated up from it, like it was heating up just for her.

On the other side of the glass, Cheiron and the two researchers had already moved to the control station. The middle-aged woman sat in front of a display screen, her fingers flying across a virtual keyboard. The bespectacled male researcher stood next to her, watching another screen and murmuring something under his breath.

Cheiron stood behind them, arms at his sides, his gaze fixed on Margaret through the glass.

Margaret met his eyes and tried to smile. She had no idea if he could even see it from that distance.

“Please remain still.” A pleasant mechanical voice echoed through the room.

Margaret pulled her gaze away, straightened up, and did her best to look calm. Even though internally, she was already cursing up a storm.

What the hell is this piece of junk? Why are there so many tubes? Is this thing gonna electrocute me? Fine if it does, just don’t kill me. I just came back to life, for crying out loud.
