You okay?”
Margaret shook off her daze and gave him a weak smile. “I’m fine.”

Cheiron stayed quiet for a moment, just watching her. Then his voice came through, softer this time. “Getting cold feet?”
Margaret bit her lip and didn’t answer.
“Don’t,” he said simply. “It’s just a standard exam. The Academy’s not out to get you.”
He had that tone people use when they’re reassuring a frightened puppy. Margaret almost chuckled but held it in and just gave a small nod.
Cheiron looked at her a beat longer, then added as if it were an afterthought, “I won’t leave your side.
His delivery was flat, impossible to read. But the statement itself caught her off guard.
His tone gave nothing away, calm and steady. But something about that remark struck her as odd.
The elevator began to climb. Margaret drew a deep breath and pushed all her tangled thoughts aside.
She lost track of what floor they were on. She wasn’t really paying attention. The doors slid open to reveal a hallway that seemed to go on forever. Silver white walls glowed coldly under the lights, and the floor was made of something that swallowed every footstep without a sound.
Margaret followed behind Cheiron until the space suddenly opened up into a lobby.
It was packed. The hallway before had been so quiet and empty she’d figured the whole Academy was like that. Tomb vibes. But nope. Complete shift. At least twenty or thirty people were moving through this
area.
Some wore white lab coats, others dark grey uniforms, and a few dressed casually like Cheiron. They all moved fast. No one strolled. No one chatted. They either had data pads in hand, files tucked under their arms, or were muttering into their Holo-bracelets. Everyone had somewhere to be, and they walked like it.
She was taking it all in when a young male in a white lab coat passed by. As he walked past Cheiron, he paused mid-step and gave him a slight nod. “Mr. Jewett.”
It was respectful, short, and sweet. Then he was gone, not even sparing Margaret a glance.
Another person walked by. Same pause, same nod, same quick greeting. Everyone who passed stopped to acknowledge Cheiron, but no one made small talk. No one even looked at her with curiosity.
Cheiron gave each of them a slight nod in return without breaking stride. Margaret stuck close. No way was she falling behind. She’d get lost in five seconds flat in this place, and getting lost here probably wasn’t a simple “ask for directions” situation. She’d likely get hauled off as some kind of suspicious trespasser.
They crossed the lobby and hit another hallway. This one was narrower than the last, with a bunch of symbols on the walls she couldn’t make heads or tails of Cheiron stopped at a door and pressed his hand to the sensor panel beside it. A blue light scanned his palm.

The door slid open without a sound. Margaret followed him through, and guess what? Another hallway. This time, Cheiron stepped up to a scanner and looked into the lens with his pale grey eyes.
“Iris confirmed.”
It was another hallway.
Margaret felt like she was stuck in a loop. She knew the Academy had security, but this was next level. It felt less like she was here for a spiritual power test and more like she was breaking into some top-secret government facility.
She couldn’t help it. “Cheiron,”
