“Hold it right there,” Margaret interrupted firmly. “You keep going down that road, and I’ll start thinking I’ve landed on some cheesy matchmaking program.”

“But…”

“Primo. can you just take five minutes off? My head’s about to explode.”

Primo let out a few reluctant mumbles but eventually went quiet.

Margaret sank back into the couch and watched Cheiron behind the desk, leafing through papers. His gaze was downcast, his fingers turning each page with a featherlight touch.

Like none of the earlier commotion had ever happened.

She was just starting to drift off when the Holo bracelet on her wrist let out a buzz.

Margaret glanced down. A new email had appeared on the screen. The sender: Imperial Academy of Sciences, Spiritual Power Testing Center.

She tapped it open.

The body of the email was standard official boilerplate. Margaret skimmed past all the legalese and jargon, zeroing in on the only part she actually cared about.

“Confirmed by the Imperial Central Brain, your spiritual power level is officially designated as: 3S Class.”

“You are the first and currently only 3S-class female in the history of the Empire.”

Exactly what she’d expected.

She scrolled down.

“Given your exceptional circumstances, the Empire will dispatch personnel to your residence tomorrow (New Era Calendar Year 341, March 19) to process related matters, including but not limited to: housing allocation, identity document updates, security clearance changes…”

Margaret’s finger paused at “housing allocation.” A tiny pang of regret hit her.

The super deluxe bathroom. The ridiculously comfortable bed. The super smart Blanc. And the super handsome.., well, anyway. She’d miss the place,

But no matter how much she’d miss it, the house belonged to Cheiron. She didn’t want to live on someone else’s charity forever. Having her own place was better,

She kept scrolling,

“Monthly subsidy rate: 60,000 credits a month.”

Margaret’s pupils blew wide open,

Sixty thousand!!!

She read that number three times, just to make sure she hadn’t added an extra zero or dropped one.

Sixty thousand credits a month!!

The S-class females only got twenty grand. She was getting triple that! A cabbage cost fifteen hundred, so sixty grand bought her forty cabbages. She couldn’t even eat one a day at that rate.

She shot up off the couch like a jack in the box.

Cheiron was looking down at his documents, but his peripheral vision caught Margaret suddenly standing up with way too much energy, her Holo-bracelet clutched in her hand like she’d just been zapped by a live wire.

He looked up. “What’s wrong?”

Margaret opened her mouth, then closed it again. Her face kept flipping back and forth between ecstatic and trying to play it cool.

Cheiron’s gaze slid to her Holo-bracelet and stopped for a second.

“The subsidy amount came through?”

His tone was casual, and then he looked back down at his documents. But the smile tugging at the corner of his mouth wasn’t even trying to hide.

Margaret thought this guy guessed way too well. She dropped the act and grinned widely.

She was not being dignified about this at all. A far cry from the cool, composed woman who’d faced down Ardon just minutes ago.

It was sixty grand. If she converted that into mid-grade nutrient solution, she could drink ten bottles a day and pour out a hundred more! Not that she ever wanted to touch that stuff again.

Plus, annoying Ardon had been escorted out by security. Phoebe had slunk away with her tail between her legs. And now the subsidy news had dropped.

Today was turning out pretty damn good, huh?

She looked at Cheiron across the room, that little smile still on his face, and the words just popped out. “You look really nice when you smile.”

Cheiron raised an eyebrow. He didn’t respond, just looked back down and went back to flipping through his documents. But his fingers hesitated for just a second on the next page.

Margaret wasn’t embarrassed. She’d only said what was true.

She sat back down on the couch and started reading the email from top to bottom, carefully this time. The housing policy was spelled out in detail. “3S-class females qualified for the Empire’s highest tier of housing allocation, Specific floor plans and locations would be discussed in person when the representative arrived.”

“Host,” Primo’s voice piped up again. This time, instead of showering Cheiron with praise, it sounded unusually serious. “Do you remember our main quest?”
