Margaret’s mouth twitched. That had the exact same ring as some corporate buzzphrase about “smooth sailing in the year ahead” at the tail end of an annual evaluation.
“Alright,” she said.
She then gathered her thoughts in a hurry, Might as well lay it all out on the table now and dodge the awkwardness later.
“Seeing as you’re being so straight with me, I’ll return the favor. Mr. Jewett, I’m thinking we should treat this as a marriage of convenience.”
“Contractual marriage?”
“Right.” Margaret nodded. “Matching is matching, but the marriage itself can be flexible. You live your life, I live mine. We each keep our boundaries. I’m happy to help with the mental counseling part, but as for the rest… I won’t force you to fulfill any beastman husband duties.”
“You won’t force me?” Cheiron repeated the phrase, tilting his head slightly.
“Right.” Margaret sat up straighter, her expression serious. “I know your heart belongs to someone else. I’m not the kind of person who doesn’t understand that.”
The living room was quiet for two or three seconds.
Margaret assumed he was gathering his thoughts. After all, having your feelings called out like that had to be at least a little embarrassing. So she kindly added, “You don’t have to feel awkward. I really do get it. That C-class female you mentioned before, the one who passed away… I could tell she meant a lot to you.”
Cheiron’s brow furrowed, but he didn’t answer. He sat across from her, his fingers resting on the edge of the table, not looking at his Holo-bracelet, not looking at her. His gaze was fixed somewhere on the tabletop.
The silence stretched on, and Margaret started to wonder if she’d been too blunt.
She was just thinking about whether to backtrack a little when Cheiron finally looked up.
“That C-class female,” he said, his voice very soft. “She was my mother.”
“What?” Margaret’s eyes went wide.
“She was my mother,” Cheiron repeated, speaking slowly. “Not my lover. My mother. She applied for a genetic modification experiment with the Interstellar Exploration Team, and she passed away.”
Margaret had not seen that coming. The way Cheiron had talked about that C-class female in his office that day was restrained, yet complicated tone. She’d assumed it was an ex. A lost love,
She covered half her face with her hand. “So you don’t have your heart set on someone else.”
“No,” Cheiron said, crisp and clear.
The air went quiet again.

This silence was different from before. Earlier had been awkward. Now Margaret wanted the floor to open up and swallow her whole.
She’d just sat there so confidently, announcing, “I won’t interfere with your feelings,” “I know your heart belongs to someone else,” “You don’t have to feel awkward”…
Cheiron took a sip of the coffee Blanc had just refilled. When he set the cup down, he said something that made Margaret’s ears feel like they were on fire.
“Whether you consider this marriage a contract or something else, I will still fulfill my obligations as a husband.”
The heat shot up Margaret’s face so fast she couldn’t control it. A husband’s obligations….
She decided to end this conversation before she could say anything else stupid.
“Um, I’m done with my pasta. I’ll put the bowl in the kitchen.” She picked up her bowl and turned around.
“Host, your face is so red.
“Shut up.”
LOL”
Across town, in the east district of the Prime Planet, inside a private apartment, the living room was dimly lit Four people were sprawled across the furniture in various states of disarray.
Phoebe was curled up in the middle of the couch, a fruit drink in her hands. She took a tiny sip, her brow knitted tight. Kiran sat in the corner, his Holo-bracelet on his knee, the screen glowing as he scrolled through something.
A few minutes ago, the galaxy-wide announcement had been pushed to every Holo-bracelet. Including theirs.
