“You’ve got a point,” Ardon chimed in right away. “Who knows what kind of stunt she pulled? She’s already holed up in Cheiron’s house, for crying out loud! Maybe he helped her cook the books on her spiritual power.”
Raikes furrowed his brow. “She’s staying at Cheiron’s place?”
“Yeah, Ms. James saw it herself.” Ardon’s expression dripped with disgust.
Phoebe quickly waved her hands in protest. “Ardon, please don’t talk like that… Either way, if she really is 85 class. that’s actually wonderful news. At least it means those three gentlemen have a fighting chance
now
She trailed off, her voice dropping even quieter. “It’s just… I can’t help being worried about her. One woman facing five 3S-class males all on her own. What if something goes horribly wrong?”
That was a slick piece of work. On the surface, it sounded like genuine concern, but every word subtly hinted that Margaret wasn’t up to the job and didn’t deserve the position.
Ardon didn’t catch it. He was already grumbling curses under his breath. Raikes missed it too. He just folded his arms behind his head, closed his eyes, and looked like he couldn’t be bothered to stay in the conversation.
Off in the corner, Kiran swiped a thumb across his Holo bracelet screen. He kept his thoughts to himself. He read through the match list twice, from top to bottom, then shut the screen off.
In the Federal Military Headquarters, Main Command Room.
“Hey! Hey hey! Have you all seen this?!”
A young adjutant in military uniform came barreling into the conference room, Holo bracelet clutched in his hand, his face glowing with excitement.
“Seen what?” An officer at the far end of the long table didn’t even bother looking up.
“The match announcement! Mr. Iverson’s match announcement! The Central Brain just released it–he’s been matched!”
The conference room went utterly silent for a split second, then erupted like a volcano.
“What?!”
“No way. There’s never been a 3S-class female before, has there?”
“Holy crap, it’s real! Check for yourselves! It’s actually real!”
“Where’s the General? Does he even know yet?”
Leaning against the doorframe of the conference room stood a solitary figure.

Baar shot a glance at the notification on his own Holo bracelet, then powered off the screen and turned
away.
Behind him, the cheers from the conference room were loud enough to blow the roof off.
In Valoran Galaxy, the main residence of the Hurst family.
“Mom! Mom! I got matched!”
A clear excited voice rang out from the second floor and carried all the way down to the first.
Timothy flew down the last three steps, his Holo bracelet hoisted triumphantly in the air. His mother, the current chairwoman of the Hurst Group, was seated at the dining table, quietly sipping soup.
The moment she heard the shout, her spoon halted midair. “What did you just say?”
“I’ve found my match! I have a partner! She’s a 3S-class female-the email even comes with her holographic image!”
He shoved the bracelet right in front of his mother’s face. She lowered her spoon, took the device, and read the entire message from beginning to end. Then she raised her eyes to her husband. Timothy’s father, seated across the table, had also set down his utensils.
The two of them exchanged a look that lasted a solid three seconds.
Ever since the 35-class spiritual power level had first been documented, there had never been a successful match. One by one, every 35-class male had fallen to madness, their spiritual power tearing them apart from the inside out. Not a single one had survived.
Timothy was their only child. From the moment they learned he was 3S class, joy had been a rare commodity. Until today. A 35-class female had actually appeared.
Timothy’s mother handed the Holo bracelet back to him and discreetly wiped the corner of her eye with the back of her hand.
In the Xylos Galaxy, two figures sat beneath the sprawling branches of an ancient tree.
One of them held a thin, slate like device-similar to a Holo bracelet, but not quite identical. A few lines of text glimmered across its surface.

“You saw the Central Brain’s announcement too?”
“I saw it.”
“So? What’s the plan? Are you heading over?”
“I’m heading over!”
At the far edge of the mountain range, sunlight pierced through the clouds.
