Timothy stole quick glances at Margaret’s face. He had seen clearly the day before that she simply could not resist fluffy creatures.

She had even smiled and stroked Cheiron’s plump little bird when it rubbed against her, Timothy’s spirit beast was an adorable little fox, and he had no desire to lose out in this small contest.

Timothy’s eyes sparkled brightly, and he acted like a playful puppy staying close to its owner. “My Lady, would you like something to drink? I’ll have the staff make fresh starlight juice for you.”

Margaret looked down. She gave the fox’s mischievous tail a gentle squeeze, then stroked it a few more times before moving the small creature aside. She took the wool blanket Timothy held out and wrapped it around her shoulders.

She said, “No, thanks. I’m just going to lie down for a while, Wake me up once we arrive.”

The starship lifted off smoothly. It broke through Prime Planet’s atmosphere and sailed deep into outer

space.

Margaret closed her eyes.

She hoped she would unlock the System Mall without trouble on this trip. She also planned to search Valoran Galaxy’s black markets for clues about the banned drugs.

Phoebe was skilled at covering up the truth. The routine pre-employment physical at Central Hospital would most likely find nothing unusual about her. She had almost certainly disguised her real condition long ago, so Margaret knew she would have to carry out the investigation herself.

By afternoon, the starship finally landed on Valoran Galaxy’s main planet, Valoranet Planet.

The moment she stepped off the craft, Margaret felt a huge difference from Prime Planet.

Prime Planet’s buildings featured cold, rigid metal designs. Valoranet Planet, though, was a bright, colorful vacation paradise through and through.

Giant floating plants stood everywhere, and vividly colored aircraft darted across the sky. The air carried a light mix of flower fragrance and sea breeze.

A hovercar arranged by Timothy was already waiting outside the spaceport.

The two got in, and Timothy skipped his own residence. He drove straight to his finest seaside resort hotel.

A soft chime echoed through Margaret’s mind just as the hovercar reached the coastline.

A flat, emotionless Al voice spoke. “Host has arrived at a new galaxy region-Valoran Galaxy. System permissions are updating….

“Reward for unlocking new map: 100 points. System Mall is now accessible. Current point balance: 398.8 (Outstanding debt: 101.2). Feel free to browse and make purchases at any time.”

This robotic tone had no hint of feeling whatsoever. It was completely different from Primo’s lively electronic voice and belonged to a basic low-level Al.

Margaret’s breath caught for a split second. She had last heard this cold, lifeless voice in her final moments before her previous death.

She took a deep breath to push away the unease, then pulled up the System Mall interface in her mind right away.

A huge list of goods popped up instantly.

The categories were extremely varied-interstellar high-tech weapons and medical potions, talismans and medicinal pills from cultivation worlds, and even young exotic beasts from primitive wild territories.

Margaret glanced over the price tags quickly. Even the most basic first-aid patch cost fifty points.

The premium items had prices lined with endless zeros, and the numbers made her head spin.

Margaret reached a straightforward conclusion.

Being broke means you don’t even deserve to browse!

Primo’s voice rushed in to cheer her up. “Don’t be discouraged, host. You earn passive points every day just by being active, and exploring new places also brings point rewards. If you keep traveling around, you will pay off the debt before you know it.”

Margaret closed the mall interface without hesitation.

Over at the HR office at Prime Planet Central Hospital, Phoebe clutched her employment form tightly, crumpling the paper edges in her tense grip.

She had chosen an elegant pearl-white custom dress that morning. She had picked it specifically to draw admiring glances as she walked through the hospital halls.

Sabrina Atherton, the HR manager behind the opposite desk, tossed a plain white uniform over to her. The simple garment had no tailored shape at all..

Sabrina kept her head down while her fingers tapped quickly on the keyboard of her Holo-bracelet. “Fill out the form and change into this uniform.”
