Chapter 99 A Scapegoat

Margaret’s words echoed in his head. “She’s buying those pills for herself.”

It was true. All of it.

A wave of nausea hit Ardon. He’d thrown Margaret away for this female. He’d gotten his leg shattered in a black market deal and dragged himself back like a whipped dog to deliver those pills. And this was what he got in return: baseless, unhinged accusations.

“You’ve lost your mind, Phoebe.” Ardon let out a cold laugh. His temper-forged over years in the Starfield Free Mercenaries Guild-had finally snapped its leash. He planted both hands on the armrests and made to stand. “I’m not stupid enough to pull something like this!”

The second he pushed up, a cramp tore through his gut. 1

Then the strength drained from his limbs all at once, like someone had pulled a plug. He slumped back onto the sofa. His eyes went wide as he tried to summon his spiritual power-and felt absolutely nothing respond.

“What.. did you put in the water?” Ardon stared at Phoebe, cold sweat beading on his forehead.

Phoebe rose to her feet and looked down at him. Nothing was left of that innocent face but ice.

“Military-grade neural suppressant. Works on S-class males too. You’ll be quiet for at least four hours.”

The three A-class husbands stepped out of the shadows. They moved in with heavy-duty restraint straps and bound Ardon’s wrists and ankles to the solid wood chair frame with practiced efficiency.

Ardon thrashed, but the drug was already flooding his system. His movements turned sluggish and useless.

“Phoebe! You goddamn snake! What the hell are you doing!” Ardon roared, the veins in his neck bulging, his eyes bloodshot.

“Shut up.” One of the A-class husbands backhanded him hard across the face, splitting his lip open.

Phoebe stepped forward, gripped Ardon’s chin, and forced his head up.

“Ardon, I didn’t want this to get ugly.” Her voice was cold enough to cut. “But you’ve disappointed me. You lost ten pills. You leaked my secret all over Starnet. Do you have any idea how close you came to destroying everything I’ve built?”

“I told you, it wasn’t me!” Ardon clenched his jaw. Blood trailed down his chin and dripped onto his shirt.

“It doesn’t matter who it was anymore.” Phoebe let go of his face, pulled out a wet wipe, and cleaned her fingers with deliberate disgust. “What matters is that everyone on Starnet is watching that post. When Purification starts pulling threads, I’m going to need a scapegoat.”

Ardon’s eyes bulged. “You’re pinning the drug buy on me?”

“You did buy the pills on the black market, didn’t you?” Phoebe tossed the used wipe onto his face. “And I’m just the poor victim you deceived.”

She turned to her three husbands. “Take him to the basement.”

The three A-class males stepped in, grabbed Ardon’s limp body like dead weight, and dragged him toward the hidden door leading underground.

Ardon’s vision blurred at the edges. His consciousness was slipping. He stared at Phoebe, standing in the center of the living room like a viper coiled to strike. A single thought burned through his fading mind.

Margaret—how the hell did you see through this monster?

In the Valoran Galaxy’s tallest structure, at the very top of Hurst Tower, a fully transparent dome arched over a slow-moving artificial nebula. Beneath the glass floor, a suspended anti-gravity pool shimmered, dotted with floating aurora lotuses.

Timothy had reserved the entire sky garden restaurant.

For this lunch, he’d activated three private air routes just to rush freshly caught deep-sea flame-tail fish to the table within half an hour.

“Try this, My Lady.” Timothy slid the deboned fish in front of her with eager hands. He propped his cheek on one hand, his blue eyes sparkling. “Hurst Group private waters, exclusive stock. You can’t buy this anywhere. The Academy of Sciences probably never serves anything this high-end with that bland cafeteria menu of theirs, right?”
