Margaret’s hand paused midair. She tapped her Holo-bracelet, and a holographic projection flared to life above the table,
The headline screamed in bold red, “The Truth About the Banned Substance Scandal-A Statement from Phoebe James.”
Posted ten minutes ago.
The replies had already blasted past a hundred thousand. The server stuttered for two full seconds before the video even loaded.
The footage was shot in a dim bedroom. Phoebe looked nothing like her usual polished self. No makeup. An oversized hospital gown hung off her frame. Her hair spilled loose and tangled around her shoulders.
Her eyes were red and swollen, her face pale as paper. She radiated a brittle, ready-to-crumble vulnerability.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Phoebe.”
The first words came with a single, perfectly timed tear sliding down her cheek.
Margaret scooped another spoonful of pudding into her mouth and settled in for the show.
On the screen, Phoebe’s voice wavered as she continued, “I saw the post on Starnet yesterday. The one about the black market drugs. I won’t deny it-every side effect they listed, I have it. But it’s not because I was vain. I wasn’t chasing some rating. I… had no choice.”
The camera shifted, pulling back to a wider shot.
Phoebe’s three A-class husbands stood behind her, their faces twisted with righteous fury, like they were ready to tear someone apart.
“Most of you know Mr. Ardon Flame of the Starfield Free Mercenaries Guild. He used to be Ms. Margaret Greene’s husband. Then he confessed his feelings to me, and we… we ended up together.” Phoebe covered her face, her voice shaking. “Ever since Margaret was confirmed as an SSS-class female by Central Brain, Ardon changed. He couldn’t handle it-the fact that the wife he threw away is now the Empire’s only SSS- class. The humiliation drove him insane.”
She lifted her head and stared straight into the camera, her eyes full of accusation. “He forced me to take those drugs. He said if I took them, I could break through S-class. Surpass Margaret. I refused. I fought him. But I loved him. He was so gentle before, so kind. I never thought he’d turn into this person.”
The husband to her left stepped forward right on cue, his own eyes rimmed red, and roared at the camera, “That bastard Ardon! He manipulated Phoebe! We’re only A-class-none of us could fight him. We just had to stand there and watch her suffer! We’ve already contacted the authorities. He’s going to pay for this!”
The video cut to Phoebe holding up an official certificate stamped with the Empire Gene Registry seal.
“I’ve been registered as an S-class female with Central Brain since birth. Why would I ever risk my life on drugs that burn through your own body? I’m just a fool who got blinded by love. I’m formally requesting an investigation by the Interstellar Security Bureau. Clear my name.”

Phoebe had played her hand beautifully. Her slum-born B-class records had been scrubbed by the black market years ago.
Without top-level clearance to dig through Central Brain’s core database, her B-class past would never surface. All anyone would find was a two-year gap in her file.
But in the Interstellar Era, that was nothing. A trip to the outer galaxies. An interstellar storm that fried the archives. Happened all the time.
She was betting no one could unmask her. That was why she felt safe dumping all the blame on Ardon.
The video ended.
Margaret swallowed her pudding and nearly clapped.
Now that was how Phoebe sacrificed a pawn to save the queen.
Yesterday’s leak had nailed every detail-the purchase timeline, the side effects-but it had never named names. If Phoebe had stayed silent, the Purification Department’s physical would’ve exposed her for sure.
Instead, she’d gotten out ahead of the scandal and slung all the mud at Ardon. And as a female, she’d walk away clean while he took the fall.
Ardon was Margaret’s ex-husband. He had a motive-revenge, Ardon had gone to the black market. He had access. Ardon was S-class. He had the strength to force her.
The logic was airtight,
