By the time we got back, it was already evening. I glared at Lucien, who was grinning from ear to ear as he carried me in his arms. Then he gently set me down on the large flat stone, letting me lie down as he massaged my waist.
“Massage it well. You’re the one who did this,” I hoarsely commanded, telling him to massage my entire back, which he happily did.
After all, even after he said we should stop and continue back at our home, he still did it to me again. Not just once, but thre times! This damn insatiable man who didn’t know the meaning of restraint.
“I’m sorry… I couldn’t control myself,”
he muttered. I rolled my eyes.
“Save that sorry for yourself. Besides, are you confident you won’t do it again?”
“No.” His answer was quick, making me want to punch him in the face.
Couldn’t he at least pretend to think about it and have some mercy on my body?!
“I told you, my legs are fine now, but you didn’t believe me, so I had to prove it to you,” he said while gently pressing on my
waist.
I gritted my teeth and couldn’t help slapping his hands.
“If you’ve got nothing else to say, then shut up!”
“Yes, my lady.”
I sighed in satisfaction and didn’t let him stop massaging my waist–it was his responsibility anyway. I slowly closed my eyes and enjoyed the brief relaxation.
However, it ended quickly when the usual hum of insects and the chirp of birds fell quiet.
Lucien’s hand paused on my waist. “Something’s wrong.”
I nodded and climbed off the flat stone, drawing the dagger I always carried. Lucien also drew his weapon.
“Someone’s watching us.” I tightened my grip on my dagger, scanning the shadows between the trees.
“Not someone.” His jaw tightened. “Several.”
I gritted my teeth.
“Stay close to me,” he said, grasping my waist as we walked further, every step crunching over the leaves.
“I smell blood up ahead,” Lucien whispered in my ear.
I looked at him and we nodded to each other as we walked toward the metallic tang—blood, old but not yet faded. My
stomach twisted.
The wind suddenly carried a rancid stench as we got closer, making my throat buni
Shit.

“Dead bodies, up ahead,” I said to him.
He nodded solemnly, his hand brushing mine and guiding me behind him. “Stay close.”
“I can fight.”
He glanced at me, then at my waist. “Wasn’t it you complaining your waist was sore?”
I glared at him. “Whose fault is that?”
He chuckled. “My fault. I’ll be gentle next time.”
“Yeah and pigs could fly.”
As we moved closer to the source of the odor, we found the first body, half–hidden beneath a fallen branch.

I froze, breath catching as I knelt and pushed aside the leaves. A man’s face stared up at me–pale, slack, eyes wide in eternal shock. His chest was scored with deep claw marks, his blood turning the soil black.
Stitched into the leather of his sleeve was the insignia of Nightshade.
“No…” My voice fractured. I touched the crest with trembling fingers. “He was one of ours.”
Lucien crouched stiffly beside me, his expression cold. His hand brushed the insignia once, lingering. “Scouts.”
Before we could move, I paused and glanced at a tree ahead.
“Shit. There are two more sprawled against the tree,” I cursed, my stomach churning.
Their throats were torn open. Another slumped forward, his blade still clutched in a death grip. Beyond him, a scattering of feathers–their ravens, slaughtered too.
A massacre.
My stomach twisted violently. “They didn’t even stand a chance.”
Lucien’s silence was heavier than words. His knuckles whitened on his weapon, his jaw clenched so tight I thought his teeth might shatter.
I swallowed hard. “Why them? Why here?”
His voice was low, dangerous, edged with something primal. “Because the rogues are bold enough now to strike at my people directly. To cut into the heart of Nightshade.”
I stared at him, horrified. “Lucien–this wasn’t random. This was planned.”
“Yes.” His eyes burned with fear and darkness. “And they spilled Alpha’s blood to send a message.”
He rose to his full height, swaying only slightly before steadying himself. His presence filled the clearing, the weight of his fury almost breaking free.
I stepped closer, my hand brushing his arm. “Lucien-”
He turned his gaze to me, and for a moment, I saw the man beneath the Alpha–the griet, the fury, the promise of vengeance carved into every line of his face.

“They will pay,” he said, each word a vow. “For every scout. For every drop of blood spilled. I’ll hunt them until the forest itself bleeds.”
The words struck me like steel. He wasn’t just speaking as a man–I was staring at my Alpha, scarred but unbroken, already rising to meet the coming war.
I squeezed his arm, steadying him. “Then we’ll hunt them together.”
His eyes softened just enough to meet mine. “Together,” he repeated.
The ravine narrowed around us like a throat, waiting to swallow its prey. The walls rose high on both sides. I didn’t like it. Too quiet. Too enclosed.
Lucien felt it too. His hand brushed mine as we walked–not a tender touch, but a warning. “Stay sharp. This place reeks of ambush.”
“I know. Keep your guard up,” I muttered, eyes scanning the shadows. My dagger was firm in my grip, sweat slicking the hil though the air was cool.
He hummed.
We stayed alert as the first growl echoed from the cliffs above, rolling down like thunder. My heart slammed against my rib
“Lucien-”
“Already know,” he said sharply.
A blur dropped from the rocks. Then another. And another.
Rogues.
Them again.
Their eyes glowed feral red in the shadows, their snarls echoing across the ravine walls. The air thickened with the stench of blood and rot.
Lucien shoved me back a step, dropping his staff and rolling his shoulders as his claws slid free. “Stay at my side.*
“Not behind you?” I shot back, dropping into a fighting stance.
For a moment, just a flicker, his mouth curved. “At my side, little wolf.”
Then the rogues descended.
The first came straight at me, claws flashing. I ducked low, drove my dagger up beneath his ribs, and twisted. His howl cut short as he slumped.
Another lunged at Lucien. He caught the rogue’s wrist, twisted it until the bones snapped, and drove his elbow into the creature’s throat. The crunch made me flinch, but Lucien didn’t stop, spinning smoothly as he kicked another rogue trying
to attack him.
We moved together like flame and shadow.
Every time I shifted left, he filled the right. Every time a rogue tried to break through, one of us cut them down. I could feel him–his presence, his rhythm–like a second heartbeat beside mine.

“You’re keeping up,” he muttered as he fought.
I parried a blow and slashed across a rogue’s chest, panting. “Maybe you’re just slowing down.”
Even in the chaos, he snorted. “Stubborn little wolf.”
But then-
A hiss of steel behind me.
I spun too late. A rogue had circled around, dagger raised high. My body froze, breath locking in my throat-
“Scarlett!”
Lucien’s roar tore through the air as he shoved me aside. The blade sank deep into his back.
Time fractured.

I hit the ground, stunned, my dagger slipping from my hand. My gaze shot up to him–Lucien staggering, teeth bared, blood already soaking his shirt.
“No!” My scream tore itself raw from my chest. “Lucien!”
The rogue sneered, yanking the blade free.
Lucien didn’t fall. He spun, growling, claws flashing as he tore out the attacker’s throat in one brutal strike. Blood sprayed across the stones.
Then he turned to me, his face taut with pain but his voice firm as he shouted, “Focus, little wolf! Don’t you dare break now!”
I froze, shaking, torn between rushing to him and collapsing where I knelt.
But his eyes–burning, unyielding–held me fast.
And suddenly, rage blazed through the horror.
I surged to my feet, snatching my dagger back up. A rogue lunged toward me, and this time, I didn’t hesitate. I ducked under his swing, drove my knife deep into his gut, and ripped upward with a scream.
“Good!” Lucien snarled, baring his teeth. “That’s it!”
Another came at him, but I was already moving, slashing across its back before it could reach Lucien. He finished it with a clawed blow to the chest.
Every blow I delivered, he followed through. Every time he staggered, I covered him. We fought as though we’d trained together for years–without hesitation, without doubt.
“Don’t think I’ll forgive you for throwing yourself in front of me,” I spat as I gutted another rogue.
He smirked, blood streaking his jaw. “Wouldn’t want your pretty throat slit, would I?”
“Lucien!” I snapped, anger masking the tremor in my voice.
His grin was savage. “You’re worth bleeding for”
My chest tightened so hard it hurt, but there was no time to answer

I caught my breath as the last rogue fell, gurgling on the ground. My body quaked with exhaustion, my chest heaving from a fight that felt endless. Lucien leaned heavily against the ravine wall, blood trailing down his back, his breathing ragged.
I stumbled to him, grabbing his arm.
“You’re hurt-”
“Later.” His grip caught my wrist, strong despite his wound, eyes locking onto mine. “Don’t look away. Don’t lose focus now.”
My throat tightened. “Lucien-”
He leaned closer, his forehead nearly touching mine. “Don’t worry about me. I told you, I won’t break easily.”
Tears stung my eyes, but I nodded, swallowing hard. “Then you’d better not fall, Alpha.”
His lips curved, almost tender despite the blood. “That’s my wolf.”
