Chapter 102
Scarlett’s POV

It felt like we had been fighting for eternity. Even if we managed to get rid of the rogues, there would always be another one appearing, coming at us with the intent to kill.
Bodies had already piled up at our feet, yet these rogues remained persistent and kept coming to kill us. It was as if… as if their minds had been programmed that no matter what, they should return to the one who had ordered them with our bodies, either dead or alive.
The person who hated me the most… Faye. I guessed she might have something to do with this, or maybe it was the neighboring packs who despised me all because of the proposal I had made and was approved by the Highest Council.
One of those who opposed me was Kade. I had noticed that he had seemed very low–key lately, and I hadn’t heard from him ever since the proposal had been signed. I thought he would strike at me, but to my surprise, I heard he went to another town to pursue his dreams.
Or…. perhaps I was just overthinking, imagining they were involved with this. Was I being paranoid and starting to accuse innocent people?
“Focus!”
I snapped back to attention when I heard Lucien’s voice shout at me while he blocked the attack of the rogue who was about to stab me.
After pushing the rogue away, Lucien turned and glared at me. “What the hell are you daydreaming for in the middle of a battle?! Are you planning to get killed?!”
“I’m sorry. I was just thinking about something.” I looked at him guiltily and my gaze dropped to the blood on his stomach as I pressed my lips together.
His
eyes softened, but his tone remained sharp. “Focus on the battle for now. One mistake and we will both die. We can think about the traitor who infiltrated our pack later, after we deal with them.”
I nodded. “Yes. Thanks for protecting me, Lucien.”
The corner of his lips curved. “It’s my duty to protect my Luna.”
Despite my aching arms, lungs screaming, and my heartbeat pounding fast after hearing his words. Damn it.
Ah, focus, focus, Scarlett! Why the hell am I acting like a teenage girl who just got noticed by her crush right now?!
I took a deep breath as we confronted more rogues who watched us, trying to find openings to take advantage of.
However, the ground suddenly shook, making Lucien and me look far ahead with frowns.
Something was coming.
A heavier growl rippled through the ravine, deeper and more beastly, so much so that even the rogues who had been about to attack us stilled. Their snarls dropped into low rumbles as they parted, creating space for the beast heading in our direction.
“Raise your guard,” I heard Lucien whisper as we both watched what approached.
My chest tightened and I remained vigilant as we saw a figure emerge through the smoke.

He was larger than the rest, his shoulders broad and scarred. His fur was mottled, claws longer than those of the rogues we fought earlier, and his eyes sharper. He hid his killing intent better than the others.
He carried himself not like a starving beast or a machine programmed to kill–but more like a commander.
The commander of the rogues.
“Beta,” Lucien murmured, keeping his gaze fixed on the beta–class rogue who had appeared in the chaos, shifting his stance instantly.
I felt it: the way his weight braced, the low rumble vibrating in his chest, and his claws flexing, blood dripping down his arms and torso.
“Stay close,” he murmured.
I swallowed hard, never taking my eyes off the creature. “That one’s different from the rest we’ve encountered.”
“Yeah, this one is smarter and much stronger than the earlier rogues,” Lucien confirmed.
The Beta rogue, acting like their commander, bared his teeth in a grin that felt almost human. He lifted his muzzle and snarled an order.
“The Alpha is bleeding! Finish him quickly!”
The words were twisted, but clear.
“Don’t forget the Luna too!” he added authoritatively.
I gritted my teeth and watched my surroundings as the rogues answered him with a chorus of howls.
I could feel Lucien at my back, watching over me while I guarded his. His breath was harsh and labored.
We needed to finish this quickly and get him treated as soon as possible. Otherwise, it would be bad if the wounds got infected.
‘Fuck, be careful,” I hissed at him as the Beta rogue snarled, raising a claw to give the order. At that alone, another horde of rogues appeared, their eyes fastened on us.
‘Little wolf,” Lucien rumbled, his back pressing against mine. “Stay sharp. He’s coming.”
I didn’t need the warning. The Beta’s weight shifted, claws dragging against the rocks as he lunged–faster than the others, even from the end of the ravine.
I barely got my blade up. The clash rattled my arm to the bone, his strength overwhelming. He shoved forward, teeth snapping inches from my face. My boots slid against the dirt.
Fuck!
“Scarlett!”
Lucien appeared and tore him off me, shoving us both back. His claws slashed upward in a brutal arc, but the Beta twisted aside and retaliated with frightening speed.
And his strike landed.
Lucien’s body jerked as the Beta’s claws raked across his ribs, deep and merciless. Blood sprayed, hot against my cheek. He

staggered, his breath ripped from his chest.
“Lucien!” I lunged for him, panic choking me.

But he snarled through clenched teeth, forcing himself upright. His eyes burned, even as blood poured down his side. “Focus, little wolf! We are still on the battlefield!”
I gritted my teeth and calmed my breathing. Indeed, we were still in the middle of battle, and enemies were swarming around us, watching and waiting for any chance to attack.
I couldn’t lose my focus now.
I roared, launching forward with my daggers in hand. The Beta met me head–on, his massive frame blocking out the smoke and chaos. He struck down, claws sparking as they hit my blades. My arms trembled, but I kept pushing forward.
We couldn’t delay this any longer, or we’d be in grave danger–Lucien especially.
“Go forward, I’m always behind you,” I heard Lucien say, blood streaming from him, but he was still moving like a predator eyeing its prey. It was as if the blood weren’t his, but belonged to the enemies.
He seemed not to feel the pain at all–or he was just ignoring it.
I nodded at him as we both moved together. He drove the beast back with brute force, and I darted into every gap, cutting and slicing wherever the Beta left himself exposed. From time to time, Lucien cut down the rogues who tried to strike at us.
I left my back wide open and focused only ahead–because I knew he was there.
The Beta roared in fury, swinging for me again, but I dodged quickly before it could hit me. My foot struck a fallen branch as thick as my hand. I glanced at it briefly before looking at Lucien.
“Lucien! Drive him this way!”
He didn’t question. With a snarl, he lunged forward, raking his claws down the Beta’s chest, leaving a large wound that made the Beta growl harshly as he staggered. Lucien took the moment and shoved the Beta toward me.
I reacted immediately, kicking the branch with my foot and catching it with one hand, timing it perfectly with Lucien’s push. I jammed it between the Beta’s legs and the jagged rocks. I watched as he stumbled and was caught off balance.
“Now!”
