Chapter 104

Scarlett’s POV

After I made sure that Lucien really returned to the Nightshade Pack, along with the warriors whom I had just commanded to take him back, even if they had to use force to drag him back–and confirmed that he truly went with them, not just pretending to comply so he could follow us later despite his injuries–I glanced at the two warriors named Nick and Arnold and nodded to them.

“Let’s go and verify it.”

They nodded, though they looked at me with concern.

The forest was silent–only the soft crunch of fallen leaves underfoot could be heard. My body ached from every muscle, every bruise, every sore joint, yet I forced myself to keep pace with them. They slowed their pace to match mine without saying a word.

Fatigue clawed at my limbs, making it uncomfortable to move, yet I couldn’t break down right now. The only people who could verify whether it was really the scout who had betrayed us and pushed us into this forest were Lucien and me.

Clearly, if I had said I couldn’t handle this, Lucien would have stepped up and pushed himself despite the holes in his body. I couldn’t let that happen, and besides, I could still walk and think clearly—I could go on for another hour.

“We’re close now, Luna,” said Nick, the taller warrior with a scar running down his cheek. His voice was low, careful, and cautious.

I nodded as Arnold walked behind me, seemingly wanting to assist me.

I let out a helpless chuckle. “I can still manage, no worries. Keep your hands on me only if I stumble. I’ll tell you if I need a break or am tired.”

They both sighed in relief and nodded. “Okay!”

As we walked, I couldn’t help but ask, “Did you get separated from the rest of the warriors when there was a cliff ahead that caused most of us to fall into this forest?”

Arnold nodded and sighed. “Yeah, we got separated. We heard your orders to retreat because it was an ambush, but we were already too late–most of the warriors had already fallen into the trap. The two of us- Nick grabbed me so that we wouldn’t fall down the cliff and might have a chance to report this incident to the council, but what we didn’t expect was that the scout was already behind us and directly pushed us off the cliff.”

After saying that, Arnold cursed. “That hateful traitor!”

I glanced at Nick, who was silent, and he looked at me, nodding as if agreeing with what Arnold had said.

Arnold, seeing this, let out a chuckle, then looked at me. “Don’t mind him–he’s like that, to the point we suspected he might be mute, but he’s not. He just doesn’t like to talk.”

I just chuckled and nodded, letting him continue.

Arnold sighed. “After that, we got stuck here. It was a good thing Nick responded quickly and grabbed me as we fell off the cliff, so we spent three days together, trying to find the others–especially you and the Alpha- but this forest seemed like a maze and it was enormous, so it was hard for us to find you all easily. After three days, we ventured out again and finally met with the other warriors. Then, on the sixth day, we finally found you two.”

“Did you encounter any rogues?” I asked.

Arnold nodded. “Yes, but it wasn’t that much. Probably the total we killed was not less than fifty. It seemed the rest of the rogues went after you two, which is why you ended up in this state.”

I let out a sigh and nodded coldly. “Indeed. This was deliberate, to get rid of me and Lucien”

“That’s what we won’t allow,” Arnold commented. “We’re here.”

They both stopped and pointed at the pile of bodies leaning against a tree trunk.

I walked closer, enduring the stench and nausea, staring at the scout’s face then stepping back.

“He’s been dead for almost eight to ten days already. It’s impossible for someone who’s been dead for two to four days to arrive at Nightshade.” I calmly said, putting a large leaf over his face,

Nick frowned. “Traitor. Someone used his identity.”

I looked at him and nodded. “Indeed. I think so too.”

Arnold gritted his teeth. “Damn them. They killed our friend!”

I looked at him, not surprised–warriors in the Nightshade were close with each other.

Suddenly, I remembered the marks and calluses on the hand of the scout who had been using this identity.

“It’s confirmed someone was using his identity to lead us into this trap,” I said calmly, then pointed to the dead scout’s hand. “He doesn’t have scars or calluses on his hands, but the person I saw–the one who led us to the trap–did.”

Nick glanced at Arnold. “Told you.”

Arnold pouted. “I wanted to kill that scout who killed our friends, Nick. He’s using Samuel’s identity to do bad things! We can’t allow that.”

Nick patted his head. “Hm.”

I watched their interaction and agreed. “I’ll discuss this with Lucien. If possible, don’t say anything about this to anyone, even if you know the person–otherwise we might startle the snake if he’s still in Nightshade.”

Both nodded.

“Can I be the one to torture him if he’s caught?” Arnold calmly asked with such an innocent expression it was

“Okay, I’ll ask Lucien to leave it to you after he’s caught. Now, I want you to help us investigate who really used

friend Samuel’s identity. Report back to us and let us handle it,” I said, looking at them seriously.

Nick just nodded, while Arnold smiled and nodded happily. “Yes, we will! We’ll make sure to complete your

task!”

He said this while holding Nick’s arm.

I chuckled. “You two get along like brothers.”

Arnold laughed. “Yeah! Although we’re not blood related, I see him as my older brother and also my lifesaver.”

“Now, let’s bury your friend so he can rest in peace,” I suggested, and they both nodded.

Nick started digging in the ground, and I was about to help but Arnold stopped me.

“Luna, take this time to rest. Nightshade and the end of this forest are still a long way. Just leave it to Nick- look at his muscles! He can do it!” he said cheerfully, and Nick just nodded helplessly.

I laughed and for once didn’t have to pretend with them. I sat on the ground and didn’t realize I had drifted off for a short nap.

When I woke up, Samuel was already buried, and the two of them seemed to be praying for him.

I stood up, feeling slightly better, and also prayed for Samuel before the three of us looked at each other.

“Let’s go back.”

They both nodded and started to lead the way.

As I looked at Arnold, who seemed to be a ball of sunshine, I couldn’t help but relax through the journey, while Nick remained silent–ready to protect us if we met rogues or dangerous animals.

“By the way, Arnold, have you found a mate? I have a friend who seems to be a lot like you, and I’m sure you two’s personalities would click,” I said, unable to resist.

He reminded me of Kathleen 2.0.
