Kathleen and I walked back to the room, our footsteps falling one after another on the hotel corridor’s carpet, like a fragile peace after a ceasefire.
As soon as I shut the door, I said, “Turn on the TV.”
Kathleen didn’t ask questions and immediately grabbed the remote. The screen lit up, cutting straight into a live news broadcast–the anchor’s expression was solemn, and the background bore the emblem of the Winter Pack.
…Just moments ago, Alexander Winchester, heir to the Winter Pack, publicly addressed his relationship with current Luna Scarlett for the first time during a press conference. Despite rumors of discord circulating for over a month…”
“Damn.” Kathleen gasped. “He actually held a press conference!”
I held my breath, staring at the screen–until that face I knew all too well appeared.
It showed me asleep in Lucien’s arms, my head nuzzled against his chest. Lucien’s face… carried a look of tenderness-
“Wow, no matter how you look at him, my brother is seriously attractive, isn’t he?” Kathleen teased.
My cheeks flushed red. I wanted to explain, but then Alexander appeared on screen.
He wore a perfectly tailored dark gray suit, his expression restrained and composed, with just the right amount of pain in his eyes.
Facing the swarm of cameras, he began to speak–his voice hoarse but steady, as if every word had been carefully crafted.
“To be honest, I was shocked to see such headlines. We had an agreement with Alpha Lucien–he asked me to allow my Luna to assist their pack with guidance in omega education. Clearly, the strength of our pack is inseparable from my Luna’s
contributions.”
‘So, I agreed. But to see this kind of news… it breaks my heart. But we all know Alpha Lucien’s status–he’s powerful, he cau do whatever he wants. Still, I must emphasize: I will not give up what is mine, even if it means war.”
“Do you believe the scandal involving you and the former Beta’s daughter hurt Luna Scarlett, pushing her into the arms of a stronger alpha?” one reporter asked.
“Nice shot,” Kathleen muttered through gritted teeth. “I’m sure not everyone in the pack is blind.”
Alexander shot the reporter a glare but remained composed.
“No, that’s something I don’t wish to explain further–it would hurt Scarlett.”
Why would he say that? As if he was genuinely concerned for me.
“Alpha Alexander, I believe now is the most appropriate time for clarification. There are clear rumors saying you kept a mistress, breaking Luna Scarlett’s heart and forcing her to leave. And clearly, the strength of the New Moon Pack hinges on its merger with the Winter Pack.”
“There are also rumors that you betrayed the bond between you and your mate. You understand how damaging this could be to your reputation–some packs might withdraw their support. While we werewolves cannot interfere in internal affairs, we do believe that anyone who betrays their mate’s bond is unworthy of trust.”

The female reporter wasn’t afraid–instead, she pressed further.
In my heart, I silently thanked her for speaking on my behalf.
Alexander finally sighed. “Fine. Scarlett… can’t conceive. So we had to ask Faye for help. We tried for three years. Everyone knows how important pups are to a pack.
“But Faye and I had an agreement. She was just a surrogate–she held no status that could ever threaten Luna Scarlett. I will always remember what the wolves of the Winter Pack have done for me. But it seems now… Scarlett has other ideas.”
The camera zoomed in on him.
When he looked up, his eyes were slightly red, as if he had just held back tears.
“I don’t think she betrayed the pack. She’s just… lost her way. I choose to believe–she’ll return, with an answer.”
I bit my lip. How could Alexander smear me like this?!
I knew exactly what he was doing–he wanted to weaken my influence in the pack.
He wanted the wolves of Winter to believe their Luna was a whore who had chosen to abandon them.
I clenched my fists.
Kathleen threw the remote onto the bed in frustration. “That sanctimonious bastard! He’s deliberately sowing confusion- using your silence to build himself a fake image!”
I bit my lower lip, my eyes still locked on that face.
He knew too well.
He knew that if he attacked me harshly, the people of Winter Pack would label him cold–blooded.
But by taking this ‘I still love her‘ stance, all the blame would fall on me.
“I want to see Lucien.”
I spoke suddenly, my voice calm but firm.
I need to know what he thinks.”
Kathleen nodded immediately. I’ll go get him now.”
Five minutes later, Lucien pushed the door open.
Still in his black trench coat, his features sharp, aura overpowering.
His eyes scanned the television briefly before turning off the sound. Then he walked straight toward me
“You saw it.”
I nodded. “What do you think he’s doing?”
“Playing the sympathy card,” Lucien replied instantly. “He knows that if he keeps attacking you, it’ll backfire. But if he says things like ‘I understand her, I still support her, it’ll destroy your image within the park. Especially while you’re absent–no one can defend you.”

Chapter 17
I sat down slowly, murmuring to myself. “He’s already moved to the next phase.”
It felt like the floor beneath me was tilting. I wasn’t sure if I could complete my plan.
I was still preparing my proposal–meanwhile, Alexander was chipping away at my authority.
