The sunlight hit my face, making me wince as it burned against my eyes. Before it could grow unbearable, a tall figure stepped in front of me, completely blocking the light……____
The corners of my lips lifted as I tilted my head up, recognizing him at once-the very first friend I had ever made.
“Claude! You’re finally awake!”
“So you’re not calling me brother anymore?” he asked.
His voice was still hoarse. Even though my father had shown him mercy and healed him, it had only been enough to stop the bleeding-to keep him alive.
His neck, arms, and legs were still wrapped in white bandages, slowly healing beneath layers of gauze.
The smile on my face slowly faded. A heavy sigh slipped past my lips as my eyes began to sting, my vision blurring.
“Why are you crying?” Claude asked softly. He sat down beside me, his bandaged hand reaching out to pat my head in an awkward attempt at comfort.
I sniffed, quickly wiping my tears away. “Papa lied to me…”
“What did the Alpha lie to you about?” he asked, his brows furrowed.
Right, Claude wasn’t awake that time when I asked papa where my mama is. At first, he kept saying that my mama was busy. with handling affairs regarding the kids that had been kidnapped by the bad adults but I happened to hear from the servants that mama was in the room, currently had lost her consciousness and they don’t know when she would wake up.
When I asked the servant about it to further clarify-I even have to intimidate her a little which I felt guilty about doing so but she won’t tell me if I won’t do so which leaves me with no other choice.
And just like that, I had found out that it wasn’t the first time that this had happened to mama. Three years ago, mama had also fallen into deep slumber for one month and it had made the Alpha-my papa depressed and when she woke up, papa had told her to never use those abilities again.
Yet, mama ended up using those abilities just to find me.
It’s all because of me. It’s all because I wasn’t strong enough to protect myself and have my mother to protect me and now she had suffered because of me.
I pursed my lips and couldn’t help but tell Claude about it despite that he doesn’t provide any comforting and nice things to
hear.
As expected, he flicked my forehead again.
“You’re such a big fool.”
I pouted, putting my palm on my forehead, blocking it from him. “Why did you flick my forehead again?!”
“To punish you for your foolishness,” he sneered. “Of course, your mother just did it because she was worried about you and if she knew you were blaming yourself because of her, what would she feel?”
She would feel sad.

don’t want my mama to be sad.
I pressed my hips and couldn’t answer.

He swallowed and cleared his throat. “Besides, what could a three-year-old do in that situation?” he said quietly. “I’m older than you, yet I was helpless too. We’re still kids. Kids are supposed to rely on adults.”
He paused, then added more firmly, “And when we grow stronger-when we become adults-that’s when we protect them. And when we’re strong enough, we protect those who are younger and weaker than us.”
I froze, then slowly lifted my head to look at him, awe written all over my face.
“I… I never thought you could say something like that…”
Ah. I said it out loud.
He flicked my forehead again, scowling. “What do you think I am, huh?!”
Despite the sting, I couldn’t stop the smile that spread across my face.
“You’re right,” I stood up, gently hugging him by his waist. “Thank you, Claude. You’re the best!”
He clicked his tongue and reached out, patting my shoulder. “Of course, I’m the best. You just know it?”
I sighed helplessly and decided to not comment on it.
Anyway, I haven’t seen papa these days too and he seemed to not leave the room. He had just let me see mama for once before he told me to go back to my room and after that, I could no longer go to their room anymore.
I couldn’t even comfort my papa. If I were hurt and sad because mama didn’t wake up, how much more papa?
Thank goodness Aunt Kathleen was here to take care of the pack. I was still a child, after all—I couldn’t shoulder those responsibilities yet. She took care of everything.
And she took care of me, too.
“Archer-”
I snapped out of my thoughts and turned around, lifting my head toward the familiar figure walking my way. She bent down to match my height before pulling me into her arms, hugging me so tightly it felt like I might be squeezed flat.
‘Archer, my great-grandson! How are you?” Her voice was as high and energetic as ever.
It was none other than my great-grandma.
At first, I thought she was my aunt and even called her Auntie, which made her laugh for a very long time. It was Papa who later told me that she wasn’t my aunt at all-but my great-grandmother.
I had been so shocked back then.
She really didn’t look like a great-grandma.
Of course, I never said that out loud. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
“Great Grandma, what are you doing here?” I asked, looking up at her. “Did you come to visit Mama?”

She nodded and planted a loud kiss on my cheek-smooch–making me squirm helplessly.
“Yes,” she said cheerfully. “Grandma came to see your mother.”

“Is she okay now?” My eyes up instantly, excitement washing over me as I looked at her-completely forgetting that she had nearly bitten my cheek off with affection.
“Yes,” she said, pinching my cheeks again. “She just woke up, and right now she’s being all lovey-dovey with your father.”
I didn’t even mind my cheeks being squished.
The tightness in my chest finally loosened, and I let out a long breath as my vision blurred.
Thank goodness…
Thank goodness Mama finally woke up.
“Miss, please stop squeezing his cheeks.”
I snapped out of my thoughts.
Claude was standing there, his brows furrowed. Despite the bandages covering parts of his face, his expression was dark and serious as he stared straight at the miss he was addressing—my great grandma-without a trace of fear.
It startled me so much I hiccupped.
Even Great Grandma seemed surprised. She froze for a moment before letting out a helpless laugh as she turned to look at Claude.
“Alright, alright,” she said, amused, finally releasing my poor cheeks, which felt swollen from her grip. Then she looked back
at me.
“Who is he?” she asked curiously. “I’ve never seen him before. Is he one of the children who were kidnapped with you?”
Her brows knitted together as she added, “From what I heard, Arnold has already contacted their families and sent the children back to their parents.”
I nodded quickly. “Yes. He was kidnapped with me-and he saved me too.” I glanced at Claude before continuing, my voice firm. “He’s my brother. And my friend.”
Great Grandma’s lips curved upward as she looked between the two of us. “Oh? Really?”
“Yes,” I said without hesitation. “He saved me.”

She turned to Claude with a gentle smile, reaching out to pat his head softly. “Thank you for protecting our little one,” she said warmly. “And from now on, please take good care of him-since he’s chosen you as his brother and his friend.”
Claude stiffened slightly at her touch.
