After a moment of calming myself down and erasing what had just happened earlier, I scrambled to dress properly.

I wanted to help. Rogues were trying to invade Nightshade.

As soon as Lucien vanished from the lakehis silver wolf tearing through the trees like death itselfI hurriedly emerged from the water. My instincts screamed at me to run after him, to join the fight, to make sure he didn’t get hurt. But by the time I reached the hill that overlooked the western border, I was too late.

The warriors had already surged forward. Snarls rang through the trees like thunderclaps. The metallic scent danced on the wind.

I turned to followbut before I could do so, Lucien’s voice stopped me.

Go back to the pack, little wolf. This scene isn’t suitable for you.

I looked up to find his direction.

There he was, standing naked in the dappled sunlight, the tips of his dark hair wet and clinging to his forehead. His body was covered with bloodthat clearly wasn’t his. His jaw was clenched, his chest rising a falling with raw fury. His silver eyes never left mine.

Don’t be hardheaded, little wolf,he said. Be obedient.”

I frowned and shook my head. I can fight too. I am an Alpha too. Didn’t you say that I am strong?

I’m not saying that not helping us right now makes you weak,he said. Go back. Protect the people in the pack if you want to help. Leave the rogues in the forest to us.

I opened my mouth to argue, but there was no time left. If I kept talking to him, those rogues might take advantage of us being distracted.

Although I wanted to argue, there was something in his voicethe rough edge, the protective command layered beneath itthat made me pause.

I closed my mouth. Nodded once. Then I turned away.

If I couldn’t fight beside him, I would find another way to be useful.

And that’s how I ended up in the pup nursery, surrounded by six cubs who seemed to think my hair was a jungle gym and my scarf a rope to swing from. One pup managed to drool directly into my coffee mug. Another clung to my leg like a baby koala.

Kathleen eventually joined us, laughing the second she walked in.

Oh goddess, she said, covering her mouth as she stared at the chaos around me. Did you open a daycare

while I wasn’t looking?

I rolled my eyes at her. I’d rather fight the rogues than deal with this bunch of naughty pups,” I grumbled, attempting to untangle my braid from the tiny sticky hands wrapped around it.

Stop rejoicing over my misery and help me,I said, glaring at her.

Kathleen snorted and plopped down beside me on the floor. You’re doing great. Besides, the warriors don’t need any help. We’ve got some of the fiercest fighters in the country out there. This isn’t a real threatit’s just a couple of idiots who forgot whose territory they’re in.”

Her words calmed meslightly. But my heart still hadn’t slowed since Lucien left me.

I didn’t tell Kathleen what had almost happened between us. I didn’t tell her that Lucien’s mouth had been on me, that we’d almost gone further before it was interrupted. If she knew, she’d certainly demand details and tease me nonstop for the rest of the summer.

Just thinking about that made my skin crawl. I immediately shook my head and diverted my attention to the pups busy playing on their own.

I glanced at her. What should we do while waiting for them?

She grinned, already pulling out her phone. I knew you’d ask that.”

She winked. Easy. We prepare beer.”

I blinked. Beer?

For the heroes. Come on,she said. What better welcome home than a cold drink and some fun?

I paused, then laughed. Fair enough.”

Come on! Let’s sneak some beer!she said, dragging me out of the nursery.

We sneaked into the storage rooms to haul out crates of local brews. Kathleen decorated a few picnic tables with scraps of linen and flowers, and we even enlisted the pups to stack plastic cups like towers. We didn’t know when the warriors would come back.

The beer was already cold and waiting to be consumed.

Still, as the minutes dragged on, I couldn’t stop myself from glancing toward the forest.

From wondering if Lucien was okay.

From remembering how he looked just before he left.

I felt like I was going crazy.

Lucien’s POV

Chapter 31

I was pissed.

No. Pissed wasn’t the right word to describe what I was feeling right now.

I was fucking furiousI wanted to find those rogues and vent my anger.

The moment I scented the rogues near our border, everything inside me snapped. The timing of these bastards was absolutely insane!

They didn’t even wait for us to finish what we started.

Damn it.

I barely had time to shift before I was flying through the trees, silver fur bristling, fangs bared. My warriors followed, but I didn’t wait for backup. I didn’t need it. This was just a warmup for me.

These bastards couldn’t have picked a worse time to attack us!

They interrupted meus.

My little wolf had finally yielded. She had given in, let me touch her, let me taste her. Yet it was all destroyed by these fucking rogues who dared to make trouble!

Fuck. Her scent had wrapped around me like a drugif she was a drug, I’d gladly be an addict.

And I was secondsfucking secondsfrom claiming what my wolf had craved since the first moment we

met.

And then the rogues came.

Good. Absolutely perfect.

Perfect enough that I wouldn’t let a single one leave alive, not without suffering,

What kind of suicidal idiots charge into the territory of the strongest pack on the continent?

Were they high on wolfsbane? Starving? Just seeking death?

I couldn’t care less.

They were dead the second they interrupted us.

I saw the first one darting through the underbrush, and I didn’t hesitate. I lunged. My claws sank into his side, pinning him. He barely had time to whimper before I crushed his throat between my jaws

Another lunged at me from the left.

I pivoted, blood spraying across the ferns as I slammed into him. His bones cracked like twigs beneath my weight. He tried to fight backtried to claw at my facebut I tore out his shoulder before he could land a single blow.

By the time the third tried to run, I was already on him.

Pathetic.

A bunch of fools.

If this was an invasion, it was the worst one I’d ever seen.

I shifted midfight, dragging the last rogue to his knees with my bare hands. His eyes widened when he saw my human form, my bloodstained chest rising and falling as I lifted him by the neck.

Do you know where you are?I snarled.

He coughed, choking on blood. Nightshade

That’s right.” I slammed his head into the trunk of a tree. The Nightshade Pack. And you thought this was a good idea?”

He whimpered.

Idiots,I muttered. Absolute fucking idiots.”

I let him drop. My Beta arrived seconds later, panting slightly, his own wolf form slick with gore.

Is that all of them?he asked.

For now.

He looked around at the carnage and sighed in disappointment. I was expecting too much, but honestly, they aren’t even a challenge.”

Damn it. I should have just left them to all of you,I said darkly, raking a hand through my hair.

He arched a brow. You look like you’re about to wipe them all out. What’s got you so twisted? This isn’t even a serious fight.

I glared at him. Yeah, right. These fuckers just interrupted us.”

He blinked. Interrupted what?

Scarlett, I growled. I was with her.”

My Beta’s mouth dropped open. Then he burst out laughing. Wait. You meanlike, with her?

I didn’t answer,

He clapped a hand to his forehead. Shit. Now it makes sense. You’re acting like we got invaded by an entire army. I thought the Elders had declared war or something.

It’s worse than that,I muttered.

He snorted. Worse?

They stopped me,I hissed. I was about to….

I clenched my fists. I could still feel her soft body pressed to mine; the way she arched her back whenever I hit her spot.

And her moans

Damn it.

My pants still felt like they were strangling me.

My Beta shook his head, grinning. Damn. I’d be pissed too.

I need a thousand barrels of ice water,I muttered under my breath.

He laughed again, giving me a teasing nudge. Come on, Alpha. Let’s get cleaned up. Your Luna’s probably setting the place on fire waiting for you. Who knows, maybe this timethat fire will catch again.

She’s not mine,I said automatically.

He raised a brow. Sure. Keep lying to yourself. Anyone with two eyes could see she’s your Luna.

Scarlett’s POV

Back at the pack house

The pups had fallen asleep, sprawled out across their blankets like miniature warriors after battle.

I let out a sigh of relief.

Finally, peace.

I wiped my hands on a towel and stepped outside, hoping to catch a breeze.

Then I heard the howls in the distance.

The victorious calls of returning wolves.

I stood straighter, my heart lurching. Kathleen joined me at the porch.

They’re back, she said with a smile. “Your Alpha is back.”

I paused and ignored her words.

We walked to the courtyard where we’d prepared beer and snacks. Warriors emerged from the trees, most still in wolf form, tails high, fur damp with blood. Some were limping Others carried minor wounds. But they were all alive. Triumphant at that, they shouted and laughed, bragging about how they had killed those

rogues.

However, my eyes weren’t focused on the warriors.

They were locked on Lucien, standing tall among them, impossible to miss.

His black hair clung to his forehead, sweat and blood mixing on his skin. His eyes found me instantly.

He didn’t smile or speak.

But he didn’t look away.

Not even for a second.

His eyes were intensethe same gaze as when we were together at the lake.

And I knew we would have to finish what we started.

Eventually.
