Chapter 41
Scarlett’s POV
The air between us heated.
The breeze stayed cool, but our bodies warmed each other.

Lucien’s gaze pinned me in place, his silver eyes darkened with heat and possessiveness. I could feel the tension radiating from him in the confined space of my bed. His hand was already placed at my back, pushing me closer to him–our chests touched, and I looked up at him, still breathing heavily after our kisses.
“You’ll be the death of me, little wolf,” he groaned hoarsely, still locking eyes with me.
The heat inside me was rising–too quickly. My mind was blown around like dry leaves in a storm. I could feel every nerve in my body tingling at his presence, his nearness, the way his eyes slowly roved over me as though he was taking inventory of every part of me.
Fuck. He was just…goddamn sexy.
How could a man be so sexy?!
“Hmm, tell me, little wolf. Did you bewitch me, huh?” he said in a low tone, and I could feel his breath on my lips.
Dayum. That’s unfair!
Before I could even decide whether to step back or flirt with him the way he flirted with me–almost making me lose control–suddenly, the door burst open without warning.
“Scarlett–oops!”
Kathleen stood there, wide–eyed for a split second, and then immediately covered her face with both hands. like a dramatic actress. “Oh, for the love of the Moon Goddess!” she groaned. “What kind of live pornography did I walk into, not suitable for kids!”
I hurriedly pushed Lucien away and rolled my eyes at her. “You’re overacting. What kind of a child are you then?”
“An innocent one?” she blinked, then exclaimed, “Ah, my eyes! My innocent eyes!”
Lucien’s jaw tightened, and his voice came out sharp. “Ever heard of knocking? Or should I knock you out so you’ll remember how to knock?”
Kathleen peeked between her fingers, grinning now. “You can’t blame me for this. I’ve always entered Scarlett’s room directly, so I thought it’d be fine if I did it again.”
“It won’t be fine next time,” Lucien said coldly, making Kathleen giggle as she looked at us with a teasing grin.
“Oh, I see, I see. Now I know. It won’t happen again so you two can continue your fun next time.”

“Kathleen!” I exclaimed in embarrassment.

Lucien, however, didn’t show any expression–in fact, his expression now was unreadable. “The next time you barge into our room without warning, I’ll have locks installed on every door in this house and make sure your key doesn’t work in any of them.”
Kathleen gasped in mock horror. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Try me,” he said flatly.
Of course, Kathleen wouldn’t dare to challenge her brother, knowing he never said anything he didn’t mean.
Watching them banter made me sigh. Kathleen wouldn’t come here to see me without a purpose–possibly she was still sad she hadn’t found her mate yet because her brother believed that every man would only hurt
his sister.
Before I could speak, I heard Lucien say, “Maybe it’s time for you to find a mate for yourself so you won’t bother others.”
I paused. My eyes nearly popped out–same as Kathleen–who looked at him in horror this time.
“No! I promise I won’t disturb you two next time!” she hurriedly explained, as if her life depended on it.
I raised my brows at her. “I thought you wanted to find a mate but your brother was restricting you?”
She turned to look at me. “Not this early! I want to enjoy my youth first!”
I rolled my eyes and shrugged my shoulders, then looked at Lucien, who facepalmed.
“You should go, Lucien,” I said, keeping my tone even.
His silver eyes slid back to me. “You’re dismissing me?”
“Yes,” I replied, standing a little straighter. “You have…work to do, don’t you?”
Almost on cue, his Beta, Kane, appeared in our doorway–it was possible he had gone to find the Alpha in his own room only to find him gone, so he changed course and came to my room instead.
Clearing his throat, he announced, “Alpha, the paperwork for tomorrow’s council meeting is waiting for your signature.”
Lucien’s eyes stayed locked onto mine for a long beat, silent but intense–almost melting me–before he finally exhaled through his nose and stepped back.
“Fine. I’ll go back but we’re nowhere near done yet, little wolf,” he said, flicking my
forehead.
I clicked my tongue and grabbed him by the collar, pulling him closer until our noses were touching.
I smirked and patted his cheeks. “I’m sure we’re not.”
I immediately pulled away before he could do anything–seeing his expression darken.

When he finally left, the air in the room shifted. Kathleen closed the door behind him and walked over to the with a knowing little smirk tugging at her lips.
There she goes again with her teasing.
I should have foreseen this the moment I initiated that with Lucien.
“You two seem to be…adjusting well,” she teased, drawing out the word “adjusting” just to tease me.
I crossed my arms and tried to act cool. “Yeah, we’re working together, so it’s no surprise.”
“What work? On the bed?”
I glared at her and she immediately laughed and raised her hands in surrender.
“Alright, alright. I’ll stop now.” Then her expression shifted to something softer, more concerned. “How’s your wolf? Have you tried to contact her again lately?”
The question made me pause. I hated how heavy the answer felt. “Kaya…. responded to me once. But lately…” I shook my head. “I haven’t called her.”
Kathleen tilted her head. “Why not?”
I hesitated. “I guess I’ve been…distracted.”
Her brow furrowed. “Scarlett, you look–not physically injured, but mentally…” She trailed off, searching for the right word before finally settling on it. “Unstable. Although you look presentable–as if nothing could break you again–honestly, you’re just good at hiding your state. You need a break. Some fresh air to unwind yourself and your thoughts.”
I paused and fell silent at her words.
I hadn’t even noticed that myself, so how could she?
I sighed and murmured, “Fresh air, huh?”
“Exactly!” She grinned suddenly, that mischievous spark returning, making me chuckle. I liked how bubbly she was.
“How about horseback riding? It’ll help you relax. And I promise I won’t let Lucien come anywhere near us!” she said, excitement unconcealed in her tone.
I couldn’t help but let a faint laugh escape from me. “Horseback riding? Are you serious?”
“Isn’t it cool?” she said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Unless you’d prefer to sit here brooding until you rot.”
I gave her a mock glare but eventually nodded–convinced by her method for fresh air. Anyway, there was no harm in going with her and enjoying what life offered.
“Alright, alright. Stop looking at me with those puppy eyes–you’re not a dog.”

“All you and Lucien do is to bully me!” She pouted.

The crisp air hit me the moment we stepped outside, cool and tinged with the faint scent of pine from the surrounding forest. It was exactly the kind of quiet the pack lands had in the early afternoon–just the distant hum of voices and the occasional sound of a training session from the warriors‘ grounds.
The stables were at the far edge of the main estate, large and meticulously kept. The wooden beams were polished, and the scent of hay and warm leather filled the air–making me feel alive.
But before we even reached the doors, raised voices cut through the otherwise peaceful scene.
“Polluting high–grade pack facilities?!”
Kathleen and I exchanged a look.
Amanda’s shrill voice carried clearly across the yard. “Do you have any idea how much this horse is worth?! And you-” her finger jabbed at a young Omega woman whose head was bowed low “-you think your filthy hands belong anywhere near him?!”
The Omega shifted uncomfortably, her cheeks red, but she didn’t answer.
Amanda still wasn’t done. The more she looked at the Omega woman, the more irritated she became, her nostrils flaring. “This isn’t just about mucking a stall, you imbecile! This is about respect, about keeping the high–born facilities free from the stink of…people like you!”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Fuck. There she goes again,” Kathleen complained as we walked toward them.
The Omega stammered something too soft to hear, but Amanda’s voice only rose. “I don’t care what excuse you have. Whoever assigned you to this stable–call them and have you and him fired together!”
My jaw clenched. The girl’s knuckles were white where she clutched the lead rope, her eyes fixed on the ground like she hoped she could disappear entirely.
Amanda sneered. She wasn’t even done yet. “It’s already bad enough that I have to share facilities with people like you, but to have my horse tainted by your touch—”
“That’s enough,” Kathleen’s voice cut through the air, sharp and steady.
Amanda blinked, surprised, before her gaze flickered toward us.
“Kathleen?”
I walked straight up with Kathleen and coldly stared at her. “It was my suggestion to have her work here. Got a problem with that?”
Amanda turned and glared at me. “You again, Scarlett!”
