Chapter 65

Scarlett’s POV

Another gathering again? Didn’t we just have one yesterday?I frowned, looking at the parchment Kathleen had given me.

Her face, once always smiling, was now grim. There were dark circles under her eyes, making me feel guilty when I saw how hard she was working.

Sensing my emotions and gaze, she gave me a smile. Don’t worry about me, Sca. You should worry about yourself, since you’re no better off than I am.

I chuckled. I just feel guilty having you run around.

Kathleen rolled her eyes. I told you, we are sisters, and I am happy to do this for you. Or-she narrowed her eyes, you don’t see me as your sister, so you’re eager to get rid of me, is that it?

I hurriedly shook my head at her grave expression. Of course not! I see you as my sister, that’s why I worry about you.

I, too, worry about you. You’ve been running back and forth to the council, handling all the gossip, dealing with Alexander’s chains, putting up with Faye’s petty attempts, dealing with the Omegas and the bills, and facing both supporters and opponents of your bill. If I were in your situation, I’d collapse both mentally and physically. You’re strong, Scarlett. No one else could do this but you.” Her words warmed my heart and nearly brought tears to my eyes.

The blockage in my chest eased, and the weight on my shoulders lifted a little.

her and shook my head. I couldn’t have done this all alone without your help.”

so sweet of you, Sca! I love you so much! She jumped at me and hugged me tightly.

and patted her head. I’m sorry for making you work so hard these days that you can’t even find your fated mate.”

mediately let go of the hug and glared at me. This again? I told you, I’m not ready for that yet. Maybe if you give me

w to play with, I’ll consider finding a mate.

d and pushed her away. Do you even think we have time for that? If I got involved with Lucien in the middle of this bill approval, do you think we could still win?

Sex can’t determine whether you’ll win or lose, but it’ll definitely improve the quality of your sleep and deepen your bond.

Before she could finish, I shoved a loaf of bread in her mouth to stop her nonsense.

Kathleen pouted and chewed the loaf before swallowing. What are you going to do now?

I’ll go. It’s not like I have a choice. Besides, the council is trying to test our patience and mental strength before the final voting session. They want us gathered in one place to watch us drain each other.I said calmly as I stood up and changed into a formal suit.

Kathleen cursed. Isn’t that sick?

I know, right. Also, keep your voice down. The walls have ears, especially since we’re not in our own territory,I said as I tied my hair into a bun.

Kathleen sighed. You’re really beautifulcan I be your mate-

No.

PPP.

She didn’t even finish her words when Lucien appeared, dressed in a formal suit too, cutting her off and making her roll her

eyes.

You’re here,Kathleen said.

Lucien ignored her and offered his hand to me. Let’s go.

Forget the sibling once they find a mate, eh?Kathleen grumbled, but the corners of her eyes were curved.

The council’s gathering banquet was filled with murmurs and gossip. The great hall overflowed with lords, Lunas, heirs, and ambitious Omegas clawing their way up.

The whispers rose as we entered. Lucien’s pet. Alexander’s abandoned mate. A Luna with two Alphas. The same gossip I’d heard since yesterday.

It seemed Faye hadn’t had a chance to come up with new rumors to spread about meor maybe she was too bothered by what I had said last night and was now working against Alexander.

If that was the case, I’d be glad and thankful that my seeds of jealousy had workedthe same way she’d planted rumors

about me.

Reynold stepped forward as we entered, the lines of age on his face, but with sharp and kind eyes. He bowed his head in acknowledgment. Scarlett. His voice was low, intended only for me. Your father would be proud.”

My chest tightened, but I met his gaze firmly. Thank you, Reynold.

Meredith gave a quiet nod, her face unreadable, but her presence comforting. Kathleen hovered near, hawklike, her shrewd, fierce eyes darting everywhere, up and down, noting every face and every murmur, as though ready to hunt down anyone who dared speak against me.

But across the roomthere he was.

Alexander.

Seated like a king in his own court, broad shoulders relaxed, dark eyes intent. Beside him, draped like a jeweled vine, was Faye. She clung to his arm, her laughter light and fake, her tilted head ensuring every wolf in the hall noticed. Her gaze met mine, triumphant, as if to say, he would choose me over you. I’ll erase your influence on him.

My wolf snarled inside me. I smoothed my suit and kept walking, ignoring her.

The dinner began with polite words, but I could feel the hidden agendas beneath them. They wanted to see me falter.

The clink of a glass drew the room’s attention.

Alpha Kade rose, his grin sharp, his tone dripping mockery. Strange, isn’t it? A Luna keeps dining beside an Alpha who isn’t her mate. Haven’t you noticed that Alpha Lucienwho isn’t her matehas never left her side? Is there something special going on between them?

Murmurs swelled at once, a scandal rippling like fire through dry leaves.

Lucien’s hand tightened slightly around his wine glass, but I was already on my feet.

Not strange,I said, my voice carrying clearly through the hall. This is strength: standing with those who share your vision,

not chaining yourself to those who silence it.

The room went still. Forks paused. Silence crackled, but I pretended not to notice.

Lucien’s eyes glanced at me, silver gleaming, approval flickering behind his calm expression.

Kade’s smirk faltered.

Then Faye stood up.

She moved with deliberate grace. If vision is what Scarlett claims, then perhaps we should all examine what kind of vision she shares with hercompanion. Her voice dripped with false sweetness. She unfolded a parchment with a flourish. Seems that the rumors were true about her, manipulating two Alphas.”

Gasps erupted. Whispers sharpened.

My pulse hammered. For a moment, I tasted humiliation and fury.

But before I could respond, Kathleen’s voice cut through the air. How convenient for a mistress to lecture us on fidelity.

Laughter was instant, sharp, merciless. Heads turned toward Faye; her smile twitched, her grip on the parchment tightening.

Reynold’s voice followed, firm and resonant. A leader isn’t judged by rumors but by results. Scarlett’s record speaks louder than whispers in the dark. Border stability. Economic growth. Rising morale. That’s evidence, not theater. Besides, if the bill passes, she’ll gain a foothold in this country. Her strength should be acknowledged.

My wolf surged with pride at his defense.

I lifted my chin, my voice calm but sharp. I don’t hide in shadows. My work is done in daylight. If that threatens you, Faye, maybe it reveals more about what you’ve done in the dark.
