Chapter 66

Scarlett’s POV

Before daybreak, the echo from the hall had reached every corner of the district. Whispers spread like wildfire, slipping into taverns, carried on the lips of council aides and pack messengers.

I could hear their gossip about Faye. It was Faye’s turn to be talked about, to be laughed at, to be the center of attention. Isn’t this what she wants? To be the center of attention? Now I was giving her the stage, and people would surely talk a lot about her. After all, they had already learned how she got Alexander.

Some even laughed at her, calling it a desperate act. However, Faye’s influence still lingered with some people. They questioned if I had truly surrendered myself to Lucien, and some wondered if Faye was the reason for all this.

For sure they would investigate the matter. After all, they didn’t know whom to believe–either me or Faye.

I could hear my name spoken everywhere. This time, it wasn’t about ‘Scarlett has two Alphas‘ or ‘Scarlett cheated on Alexander‘ or ‘Scarlett is such a whore‘ and so on.

Now they spoke my name with admiration.

I just ignored those who spoke my name with scorn, especially those insecure Alphas.

Back at the quarters, the candles in the study were burning low when Lucien closed the door behind us. His silver gaze was sharp, cutting right through me.

“You shouldn’t have risen to her bait,” he said, his tone like flint striking stone. “The council was there too.”

My jaw tightened. “And what, just let her paint me as a coward? Let the room think she owned me?”

His hands braced against the edge of the desk, his body taut with restrained energy. “Every word you gave her was fuel. You’re trying to win hearts, Scarlett, not scorch them. It would be fine if there were no high authorities in that hall.”

I stepped forward, my chin high, anger sparking. “Hearts will never follow me if I let myself be their victim. Do you want me to sit silent while she drags me through the mud?”

Lucien’s eyes burned, but his voice was cold. “Sometimes silence has more weight than fire.”

“Not when silence looks like weakness.” My voice rang out shaper than I’d intended. “You don’t know what it’s like to have your dignity clawed away until people only see a broken Luna. I won’t wear that again.”

The air between us was electric, our words striking like swords.

“See? She’s already affecting your emotions, little wolf.” His voice softened as he let out a heavy sigh. “I’m glad you’re finally fighting her and realize that the rumors they spread about you will determine how many people support you, but if you keep letting your emotions override your rationality, you’ll end up playing right into her hands.”

I rubbed my temple and sat on the chair. “I can’t just let her keep taunting me, right, Lucien?”

“Yes, little wolf. You can fight back, but don’t do it just because she does. Keep your head cool. You’re rushing to end things.” I heard him say as his hand gently caressed my head. “You’re already doing well. Fight back at your own pace. She’s already

shaken too.”

“I want this to end, Lucien.”

“I know, I know… isn’t that why we’re here trying to fight for your freedom, and for the others who are like you, isn’t it?” His

soft voice somehow calmed me.

I didn’t even realize I had been on edge while Faye was pushing me closer to it.

“I’m just so tired…” I complained, leaning on him.

“Take a rest. Leave this to me.” He said softly, but I shook my head.

“I can’t. The Head of Council doesn’t want you involved.”

The door creaked before he could respond. Kathleen strode in, her arms burdened with parchment. She glanced between us and smiled.

“I’m glad you two made up,” she said firmly, setting the papers down. “The whole district is buzzing. The parchment, the laughter–it’s already twisting. Faye’s turning it into something bigger. That woman couldn’t wait and dragged your name into it directly.”

I exhaled, steadying myself.

Lucien’s jaw clenched as he turned his attention to her. “How far?”

“Beyond the council,” Kathleen replied. “It’s reached the border packs. She’s feeding them lines about betrayal–about a Luna scheming with a rival Alpha.”

My chest tightened, but I straightened my shoulders. “It seems she doesn’t question Alexander about why he’s so intent on getting in my way. I’ll fix this right now.”

Lucien’s silver gaze flicked to me, colder now. “No. We wait. If we strike now, it’ll look desperate. We need strategy, not

emotion.”

My wolf snarled inside me, restless. I met his gaze without flinching. “And if we wait, it festers. Every hour she poisons me, the harder it will be to claw my name back.”

“Better patience than reckless war,” he replied sharply.

“Better fire than a slow death,” I snapped back.

The room fell silent.

Kathleen looked between us, her lips parted as though she might intervene, but before she could, the door opened again. Reynold stepped inside, his face grave.

“They’re moving quickly,” he warned. “Kade’s aides are gathering names already. Tonight gave them leverage. They’ll use it to firm up the ‘no‘ votes before the next session.”

The weight of his words pressed against my chest. Silence stretched, broken only by the crackling fire.

I drew a sharp breath. “Then we don’t wait. We don’t let them own the story. We take it back–immediately.”

I wanted to urge them to act right away. I knew something was wrong with my thinking. Maybe it was just because I was too anxious, too tense about the upcoming sessions—the final votes–that I wanted to hurry and gather as much support as possible.

My head was buzzing. My emotions were clearly affecting my decision–making, and I felt irritated when things didn’t go my

way.

Fuck.

Lucien’s voice hardened. “That’s exactly what they want you to do–lash out. If you walk into their trap, you’ll give them the proof they need for every accusation.”

I faced him, fury growing, but underneath was something harder and more painful–a part of me just being stubborn. “I thought you were on my side.”

I… I didn’t want to get angry. I didn’t want to lash out at him. I knew he was looking out for me–protecting me and caring for me, but why did I feel like this?

I could hardly breathe.

His eyes flickered, pain flashing quick as lightning, then gone. “I am. That’s why I won’t let you burn yourself down just to prove you’re not weak.”

The words struck deep.

My wolf stirred, unsettled. Kaya’s voice whispered in my mind, soft and low: “You’re both fighting for the same cause—but not in the same way. Calm down, Scarlett. Don’t think about it, just let Lucien lead for once. You can let your guard down with him.”

I shut my eyes a moment to digest her words. When I opened them again, Lucien was looking at me, the muscles in his jaw tight, his eyes hard to read.

I turned away, pressing a hand against the back of the chair. “Then tell me, Lucien–if I stay silent, if I let them spin their stories until they suffocate me–what do I become in the end? Just another Luna destroyed by whispers? Another woman who was too ambitious and lost herself? I’ve decided right now–I won’t let them smear my name with their filth!”

“Damn it, damn it! Damn that woman!” She stormed into Alexander’s private chamber, her scowl still deep from dinner.
