Scarlett’s POV

The events happened too fast for me to keep up. In just the blink of an eye, we were separated by the other warriors, and after the ground shook, we fell down a hollow cliff that seemed endlessalone and injured.

I only suffered bruises and scratches from the leaves and rocks that struck us during the fall, but most of the injuries were taken by Lucien, who used his body as a shield to protect me from harm.

I watched as he leaned against the trunk of a gnarled oak, his chest rising and falling too shallowly, his skin gleaming with sweat, dirt, and blood. His complexion was paler than usual.

I went to him, leaning close, refusing to look at the dark stains spreading across his shirt that made my heart ache for reasons I couldn’t explain. My hand was trembling as I touched himsoftly at first, then firmer as I traced the line of his ribs.

Touching my abs already in a place like this?he joked hoarsely as his body flinched at my touch, his whole body jerking despite how hard he tried to control it.

I pursed my lips, my vision blurring. Before I could say anything, he noticed I was about to cry. His left hand, much cleaner than his right, reached out and gently wiped away the teardrops from my face.

I’m fine, little wolf. Don’t worryhe said, his voice hoarse as he tried to soften it.

I pursed my lips and couldn’t help glaring at him. Fine? You call this fine?

I gritted my teeth and pressed on him again, and he hissed, his eyes narrowing. Your ribs are broken. At least two, maybe three. And your leg—My throat tightened as I glanced at the twisted angle of his ankle. FuckYou can’t even move your legs or stand, so how can you say you’re fine? Is this your new definition of fine, huh?!

His lips curled in a humorless smirk. I can still sit, can’t I? I can even talk to you, so I’d say I’m still fine.

His words scraped raw inside me. My chest burned, and the guilt that had eaten at me since the fall finally broke loose. Lucien, this isn’t a joke! You’re bleeding, you’re-My voice cracked. You’re hurt because of me.”

His head snapped toward me. The smile disappeared from his lips, and now he looked at me with a grave expression. Look at me, little wolf.

I lifted my head and met his eyes. If I had just stayed behind you, this wouldn’t have happenedyou wouldn’t have used your body to shield me, and now you’re bleeding, you can’t even move your legs, andand your bones are broken.”

Scarlett.” This time, he called me by name. His tone was sharp, cutting through me. His hand clutched at his ribs as if trying to hold himself together. I won’t allow you to blame yourself. This isn’t your fault. We cannot control the events to come, and besides, if we’re talking about faults, then I should apologize too. After all, if I had listened to you and reacted immediately when you said there was something off about the scout and noticed it right away, maybejust maybe, this wouldn’t have happened at all.”

I shook my head, my breath hitching. This wasn’t your faul-

Nor is it yours,he said sharply. I don’t want to hear you blaming yourself and saying I got hurt because of you, because even if we could go back in time, I would not hesitate to do the same thing, little wolf. I don’t want to see you get hurt.

Tears brimmed in my eyes as he gently held me in his arms. I pressed my head to his chest, listening to his steady heartbeatassurance that he was alive. Butjust as you don’t want to see me hurt, I also don’t want to see you in pain.

I know, little wolf, I know. His hand gently patted my head, warming my heart.

You could’ve escaped easily if not for—

I would always protect you,he interrupted fiercely. Every damn time, little wolf. Do you understand? His voice, rough and cracked from strain, was still strong. I’d break every bone in my body before I let this world lay a finger on you.

I pursed my lips and buried my face into his chest a little longer. My heart trembled and beat fiercely at his wordsand it wasn’t just mine; his too was beating at the same frequency as mine.

By the time night fell, the air grew damp and cold. There wasn’t much light where we were, but thankfully ou eyes could see in the dark, otherwise we’d have had a tough time watching our surroundings, staying vigilant for friend or foe that might come and attack.

I crouched near a small hollow, striking flint against steel, but my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. I tried again to create a fire, but sparks just leaped, scattered, and fizzled in the darkness.

I had even gathered small branches and dried leaves to make it easier to start a fire, but still, I couldn’t do it.

I cursed under my breath, biting down so hard on my frustration that my teeth ached.

Behind me, Lucien laughed helplesslythough soon after he’d laugh, he would hiss and cough from the pain. You’re holding it wrong, little wolf.”

I shot a glare over my shoulder at him. Do you want to do it yourself, Alpha?

His mouth curved up faintly. If I weren’t sitting here with half my bones shattered, I would.

Then shut up and let me do this without you laughing at my work,I snapped as I struck the flint again. More sparks flew, but nothing caught.

My shoulders sagged. I gritted my teeth and glared fiercely at the flint, hoping that if I glared hard enough, it would finally work.

Little wolf,” he said gently, slow down. You’re rushing. Aim for the bark. That patchthere.

I swallowed, forcing my shaking hands to follow his instruction. This time, sparks finally kissed the brittle bark, and smoke curled up. Tiny flames came to life, small but steady.

Finally! After an hour spent here, I finally did it!

I sat back on my feet, relief surging through me, and I couldn’t help but feel smug for the first time. Ha! See?

Who’s helpless now?

Lucien chuckled, though it quickly broke into a hiss as pain shot through him. He pressed a hand to his breath hitching, yet his eyes gleamed in the firelight. You were never helpless, little wolf

I paused. My chest tightened, and I turned quickly to feed the small branches to the fire before he could the color rising to my cheeks.

Damn it. He’s flirting with me, isn’t he?

When it was time for us to rest and we settled beneath the large tree roots, sheltering there, we suddenly heard the rustling of leaves interrupt the distant, hollow silence of the forest.

Then the voice came. Long, low, and hungry.

My body stiffened instantly. My hand reached for the dagger I kept on me, my pulse racing. Rogues,” I breathed.

Lucien’s expression grew serious, his eyes narrowing toward the trees. His look hardened as he braced himself, dragging his body against the trunk.

Stay close to me,” he ordered.

You can barely move,I whispered, panic clawing in my chest.

We were clearly at a disadvantage right now.
