Scarlett’s POV
I was awakened by the sound of ragged breathing. I immediately opened my eyes, alert–especially since we were alone in this forest and still didn’t know where we were or if there were any dangerous individuals roaming around, like the rogues we had heard last night.
I immediately looked up at Lucien, whose head was tilted back against the tree trunk, sweat dripping from hi temple despite the cold night air. His shirt clung to his chest, damp with his blood.
My heart trembled and I hurriedly checked his forehead, then compared it to mine. As expected, he was hotter. It wasn’t just my imagination; it felt like something hot was hugging me.
His jaw was locked tight, teeth gritted as if he wanted to hide the fact that he was in pain.
“Lucien,” I whispered, reaching out to him and gently patting his cheeks.
His eyes flickered open, hazy with pain, but the familiar stubborn fire still burned in them. “Go back to sleep,” he muttered, voice hoarse.
“You’re burning up.” I reached for the waterskin and tipped it against his lips before he could argue. “Drink.”
He tried to turn his head away, but I pressed the rim harder. “Don’t make me force you, Lucien. Drink it.”
His glare cut at me, but in the end, he drank–slow and reluctant–each swallow an obvious effort, as if I were forcing him to drink poison.
Damn it. How stubborn could a person be once they’re burning with fever, that it even affected this easygoing Alpha?
When he finally pushed the waterskin aside, his voice was raspy. “I don’t need a nursemaid.”
I glared right back. “Good. Because I’m not one. I’m the idiot who followed you out here, remember? Which means you’re stuck with me whether you like it or not.”
For a moment, silence. His chest rose unevenly, and his hand clenched on his thigh as if bracing against the fire in his ribs. I wanted to shake him, to scream at him for being so proud even now, but instead I smoothed the damp strands of hair off his forehead. His skin burned under my touch.
“You’re not fine, Lucien,” I murmured. “So stop pretending.”
“I can’t let my guard down right now, Scarlett.” His voice was soft as he locked his tired gaze on me, seriousness filling his eyes. “We don’t know what kind of foes we’ll meet here while we’re in this state.”
I pursed my lips and couldn’t find anything to rebut. After all, our well–being was in danger too. We didn’t know this place yet. Lucien was injured and couldn’t stand–still in his recovery phase–while I, though mostly okay, had a sore body. But I was confident I could handle things if anything happened.
But if I voiced that out now, he would surely dislike it and force himself to move in his current state.
Me refused, especially since we’re in hill need in wiping him with my rip of cloth

It’s better that I look for something for both of us to eat, especially since don’t know how long we’ll be stuck in this forest. Otherwise, we might die before they find us.”
His jaw clenched, fury flashing in his eyes, but I disregarded it. Before he could stop me or convince me otherwise, I slipped into the trees, not looking back even when he called my name.
As I walked. I calmly memorized the path I took while also following the rabbit I’d seen earlier, which had passed me as if it were running away from something. I clenched my dagger, ready to strike if I found it.
However, the rabbit I’d followed was gone.
I kept searching for it, when I felt a presence behind me. A growl rumbled out of the shadows from behind
