Gold Digger vs Gold Saver My Man's Double Life novel Chapter 43

Chapter 4

After deciding to keep the baby, I went back to the hospital for more tests.

Coming out, my mentor called.

“Your mom dragged someone here for an abortion. You know about this?”

“She’s gonna end my career!”

How messed up can someone be?

Ignoring someone’s will. Ignoring their rights.

Mom invested in that private clinic in Cambridge, so she thought she owned everyone there.

I didn’t hesitate. Called the cops.

Then called Finn.

No answer.

When I got there, total chaos.

Two groups. One holding back Mom. One holding back Rue.

“Shameless trash. Homewrecker. Ruining my daughter’s family. Pregnant with a bastard. Your mom didn’t teach you how to be human? I’ll teach you today.”

“Who the hell are you to scream at me? Oh, I’m terrified. You know, a dog bit me when I was a kid.”

“You calling me a dog?”

“Yeah, you. Old hag. Come at me if you dare. I’ll beat your ass.”

“Oh, so you seduce married men and think you’re right? Got so much nerve-why not strip naked in the street and give everyone a show?”

“What, you try that already? That how you know?”

Mom was vicious.

Rue wasn’t backing down either. If no one held her, she’d have lunged.

Until the cops showed up.

So did Macy’s dad. The big boss.

Cops tried to mediate.

Mom and Rue kept going at it.

Macy’s dad was efficient. Slapped Mom across the face.

“Shut up. Not embarrassing enough?”

Instantly. Mom went quiet.

Then he turned to Rue. “Ms. Harlow, I’m sorry. Really. Just tell me what you want. Can we handle this ourselves? I don’t think either of us needs this drama going public.”

Rue’s hair was a wreck. She looked destroyed.

She laughed-mean and sharp.

“Handle it ourselves? Hell no. I’m calling the police. Suing her. I’m-”

“Smack!”

Another slap. On Mom’s other cheek.

“How about now? Enough? If not-”

Everyone froze.

Especially Rue. Her lips pressed tight. Face looked awful.

And me-standing there outside the crowd-I couldn’t move. My hands were shaking. Clenched so tight my nails dug

I’d seen this play out before-

Slap.

“Enough?”

Slap.

“How about now?”

Mom grabbed my hair. Shoved me in front of a kid and her arents.

“Still not satisfied? Then this.”

Chapter 4

Slap.

Back then, I was eight. The kid ripped my test. I pushed her. he fell, cried, said I attacked her.

When mom came to school, she slapped me right there.

Then asked them, “Is that enough?”

Did it hurt?

I don’t remember the pain.

Just the dizziness. The warmth spreading down my legs.

I wet myself. In front of the whole class.

When I was little, I never understood why Mom and Dad didn’t like me.

I got straight A’s. Learned everything fast. Teachers praised me. Adults who knew me said nice things.

Just not my parents.

Dad acted like I didn’t exist.

Mom’s eyes were always cold.

“So what if you got an A? You showing off?”

“Get lost. Seeing you pisses me off.”

My good stuff never got praise.

But my mistakes got blown up huge.

She was like a quality inspector with a magnifying glass. Any tiny flaw I had turned into her personal party.

I lay on the carpet, thinking about nothing.

Macy walked in at some point.

Stood over me, looking down,

“Did you see my message? I called you too. You totally ignored me!”

“Stella, that’s so rude!”

I closed my eyes. Rolled over.

But she lay down next to me anyway.

“After Dad got home, he seriously warned Mom. Said if she loses Finn as a son-in-law, he’s bringing Cade back

home.”

Cade Montgomery.

Macy’s dad’s illegitimate son. Two years older than me.

“Mom went nuts. Smashed everything in the house. Told me have to marry Finn.”

She sounded annoyed. “When are you guys actually divorcing?”

Didn’t wanna deal with her. Got up to go upstairs.

But she grabbed me.

“Play chess with me.”

Couldn’t take it anymore.

“You? Play what? Checkers? You suck.”

Macy just grinned.

We played two rounds. Each one took over forty minutes. Every move, she thought for one or two minutes.

Finally, halfway through round two, I passed out.

Macy noticed pretty quick.

Waved her hand in front of my face. Tiptoed around looking for a blanket. Carefully covered me with it.

Then crept out, shoes in hand, slowly closed the door. Left the room totally quiet.

That day, Macy asked a good question.

When were Finn and I actually getting divorced?

He’d been on a business trip for days.

Got back today. Went straight to the office after landing.

Soon as I heard, I rushed over.

Still too late.
