Chapter 5
Behind me, he blocked Mom.
“Mrs. Montgomery, you really can’t go in.”
Outside the door was a battlefield. Inside wasn’t much bette
Rue had Finn by the collar. Practically on top of him.
Finn leaned against the wall. Fire in his eyes. But the corners were red.
Don’t know if he was pissed or turned on.
I stopped dead.
They both turned. One looked back, one looked up. Both stared at me.
Their eyes were vicious.
Yeah. No place for me in this world.
Rue’s face went cold. Let go of Finn. Picked up her hat from the floor and put it on.
“Bunch of psychos.”
She said it through gritted teeth.
I touched my nose. Suddenly remembered there were crazier people outside.
Was about to warn her.
But too late. She already opened the door.
Then came a roar: “Back off! Don’t test me!”
Damn.
I gave Finn a thumbs up.
“Nice. She’s got presence.”
Finn’s face stayed cold.
Loosened his tie. Asked, “What are you doing here?”

Chapter 5
I looked at Finn. He was clearly pissed.
Dropped the casual act. “Is the divorce agreement ready yet
Finn’s hands slowed down.
“Stella, if I hadn’t cheated, would you still divorce me?”
What a weird question. But I went quiet.
Finn laughed. Short and bitter.
“Got it.”
He nodded.
“Don’t worry. You’ll have the papers by tomorrow.”
“Anyway, I never really liked you that much.”
That last part he said super quietly. I didn’t catch it clearly.
But from the look on his face, he didn’t wanna talk about it. So I didn’t push.
Finn kept his word.
That afternoon at five, I got the divorce agreement.
The asset split was way more than I expected.
I read through every clause. Then signed my name at the bottom.
That same day, I got a call from Cade Montgomery.
He said he was wrapping things up. Asked if I was ready.
When I was eight, Cade’s mom died.
He came at us like a wild animal. Bit down on our dad’s arm
That’s when he showed up in our lives.
His appearance made our dad and Mom hate me even more
Because when Dad got hurt, I didn’t cry, stayed cold.
But Macy was different. She was five. Hugged Dad’s arm, crying hard, blowing on it, asking if it hurt.

Chapter 5
He cheated. Had a bastard kid. Why would I cry?
He shook his head. “Ungrateful brat. Can’t teach you anything.”
Mom grabbed my ear, dragged me outside. Shoved me into the rain.
“Raised you for nothing. Can’t even cry? You got ice in your veins. Nothing human about you.”
Cade was in the rain too.
We got soaked together. But I hated him as much as he hated me.
Dad didn’t take him in. But sent him money every month. He took it.
His only advantage with Dad was being male.
But he didn’t join Dad’s company.
He couldn’t be tamed either. So Dad never publicly acknowledged him.
Later I married Finn. Joined Twilight Pharma.
First year, I gave Cade his first chunk of cash.
He asked what I wanted.
I said, “Freedom.”
That couple created three kids but never treated any of us like people.
Just objects. Things.
They could shape us, control us, however they wanted.
What made them so bold? So entitled?
Their power? Their money? Their status?
I wanted to run an experiment.
If I stripped them of everything they had, would that strip them of their power over us three kids?
“Do it. I don’t need to do anything. I’m just watching.”
