Chapter 6
September eighth. Finn and I met up at the lawyer’s office.
Since we had no disputes, the whole thing went fast.
Less than half an hour later, we had our divorce papers.
Walking out, I said it out of nowhere.
“I’m pregnant.”
Finn looked dazed for a second.
His head turned toward me like it was glitching.
“What did you say?”
“I’m pregnant.”
This time Finn’s breathing stopped too.
He stared at me hard. Emotions I couldn’t read churning in His eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why tell me now?”
“Didn’t tell you ’cause I didn’t wanna drag things out. Telling you now ’cause you’d find out eventually.”
I was totally selfish about this. Didn’t think about anyone else.
Since I was little, Mom always told me to be good.
Good to who?
Good to her. Good to Dad. Good to Macy. Good to everyone else.
As for me? Didn’t need to think about myself.
So many times I wanted to break out of that. But kept getting trapped back in it.
Finding out I was pregnant. Finding out Rue was pregnant too.
I should’ve gotten rid of the baby.
Finn would get married eventually. My kid sharing blood with him would cause endless problems.

But I wanted to keep him.
My baby.
Mine alone.
“Finn, you can see him. But you can’t take him from me.”
After that, Macy ran off again.
Soon as she found out I was divorced, she booked a flight.
“You bring enough money?”
“Yeah, plenty.”
“Take more. You won’t get any later.”
Macy caught my meaning. Went quiet.
Her feelings about that couple were the most complicated.
She got the most love from them.
At first she’d think it was love. Affection.
Later she realize it was spoiling.
Then later, she find poison inside.
“I don’t know. I don’t get it. I’m not smart like you guys. Can learn piano, can’t paint, can’t dance, can’t even play chess. Just pretend I don’t know anything. And honestly, I really don’t.”
She hugged me. “Stella, bye.”
I froze for a second. My hand twitched.
Actually, I knew. She was a sweet, soft kid.
When we were little, we took piano lessons together. She had to practice, so I had to sit with her.
She hadn’t even started yet, but I already knew how to play everything.
She got so upset she cried.
Mom took a cane and hit my palms.

Chapter 6
“You’re there to support your sister. Not show her up.”
“Always gotta win. Why are you so jealous?”
The beating left my hands so swollen I couldn’t grip a fork
Mom noticed. Snatched it up and threw it at my face.
“Not hungry? Get out. You really gonna give me that look?”
My face burned. Mouth tasted like metal. Spat out blood.
That night, Macy snuck into my room. Gave me candy. “Stella, eat this.”
1 looked at her coldly.
Then threw the candy and pushed her away.
She cried again.
But she covered her mouth. Face turning red. Didn’t let herself make a sound.
I hated her. Hated her crying. Hated how clumsy she was. Hated how she couldn’t learn anything.
Because when she cried, I got punished.
When she fell, I got punished.
When she couldn’t learn, I got punished.
When did I start realizing she wasn’t so bad?
Probably when she asked to learn chess.
In the Montgomerys, we had to accept what they gave us. But we couldn’t ask for anything.
Mary said, “Mom, I wanna learn chess.”
Mom frowned at her. Eyes cold.
“Macy, sweetheart, Mom’s gotta call you out here. Why do you keep jumping from one thing to another?”
“Chess now? Baby, you’re just burning through our money.”
Macy hesitated. Then bit her lip. Looked at Dad.
“Dad, can I take chess lessons?”

Mom’s expression turned to stone.
“Macy-”
“Relax. She wants to learn, let her learn. It’s not that serious,
Dad made the call.
But actually making it happen still depended on Mom.
Mom gave her the cold shoulder for a week.
Macy was like a puppy. Kept going up to her. Softly calling “Mom.” Saying “Mom, drink water” and “Mom, let me rub your back.”
