Chapter 8
Pregnancy’s wild.
It wasn’t some textbook idea anymore. It was a real, tiny person growing inside me.
This kid was living off me, following some ancient genetic blueprint, building himself bit by bit.
His existence kept reminding me: beyond my heartbeat, there was another brand-new rhythm forming.
This strange connection made me feel fragile and strong at the same time.
I worked hard. Took care of myself.
He was probably a good kid.
No morning sickness. No loss of appetite. I even gained four pounds.
Week sixteen, I scheduled a checkup.
Heading out, I found Finn’s car already parked outside.
We’d barely talked lately. Mostly just work stuff.
He looked worn down. Don’t know what he’d been through.
Seeing me, he rubbed his temples. Voice rough. “I’ll drive you.”
“Don’t say no right away. I’m still the kid’s dad. I won’t fight you for custody. But you’re alone. I’m worried.”
I didn’t move. Just looked at him flatly.
“He’s only my kid.”
“You’re just a major shareholder in my company. I don’t need you looking after me. You’re overstepping.”
Finn’s breath caught.
“You really gotta be this cold?”
“Finn, you should get this. It’s the way things should be.”
“Why?”
“Because we’re part of two separate families now.”
“NO!”

Chapter 8
Finn’s voice rose. “I didn’t cheat. Rue’s not pregnant. We can still be a family. We have a kid. We-”
Finn cut himself off.
Then he laughed bitterly.
“You don’t care, do you?”
“It was so obvious. Full of holes. You’re smart. You knew all along.”
“You just didn’t care, right?”
Finn’s words threw me.
What did I know?
Rue wasn’t pregnant?
I knew that?
But I sorted it out fast.
Even though I had no clue why Finn lied to me, I got it. We could be solid business partners. But we’d never work as a couple.
Finn and I had one huge fight before.
That night he got drunk. Called me for an hour straight.
Phone was locked in a drawer. I didn’t hear it.
By the time I got home, it was four in the morning.
He was sitting in the dark living room.
I asked, “Why aren’t you asleep?”
That one question. He smashed everything in the living room. And suspended me from work.
He needed a wife.
One who’d take care of the house, raise kids, wait for him no matter how late he came home.
But we’d agreed.
Four years ago I showed up with my resume.
Told him what value I could create.
But I needed the title of his wife to break free from the Montgomerys.

Chapter 8
He said yes.
We were married. But more than that, we were partners.
“We were always gonna divorce eventually.”
“If you need it now, that’s fine too.”
Now, Finn looked at me.
“Did you ever like me?”
I don’t know.
I don’t know what “like” even means.
I liked how he looked. Liked his body. Liked sleeping with him. Liked the work environment he gave me.
But I didn’t wanna spend forever with him. Too time-consuming.
Finn probably got my meaning. He nodded. Pressed his sore eyes.
“Good. I never liked you that much anyway.”
