Chapter 9
Once, Macy went on a late-night city walk. Ran into this super cool, gorgeous female DJ. Took a video. Sent it to me.
I looked. It was Rue.
Later Macy went back to hang out. Got drunk.
I showed up pissed to pick her up. Turned out Rue was with her.
No wonder that voice on the phone sounded familiar.
“Long time.”
Rue nodded.
“Keep an eye on her. A girl getting wasted in a place like this? Plenty of creeps around.”
“Thanks.”
“I’m out.”
“Wait, Rue!” I stopped her. Then pointed at Macy.
“Can you help me?”
Rue frowned. Looked at Macy, then me, then my belly.
Next second, she scooped Macy up with one arm.
“Where’s your car?”
Macy was a nightmare.
Not only did she puke in the car, she puked all over Rue.
That moment Rue probably wanted to strangle her.
Got to my place. Didn’t need to invite her. She charged straight in. Took a shower for half an hour.
By the time she came out, I’d already opened a bottle of wine.
“Wanna drink?”
“You-”
“For you. I’m drinking milk.”

Chapter 9
Rue wasn’t shy. Sat cross-legged on the carpet.
She drank half the bottle I’d opened. Got a little tipsy.
First thing she said: “Your whole family’s insane.”
I never argued with that.
Rue laughed bitterly. Muttered, “But who isn’t? How many normal people are there in this world?”
“You’re drunk.”
She shook her head. “I’ve been drunk for years. But right now I’m sober.”
She asked, “Why’d you divorce him?”
I thought about it.
“Because I don’t need marriage.”
“Then why’d you get married?”
“Because I needed marriage.”
Rue frowned. Total “are you messing with me” expression.
I smiled.
“I needed marriage as a tool back then. But I was never gonna stay in it forever.”
“So for me, marriage was strategic. Not a necessity.”
Rue went quiet. Poured herself another glass. Drank it.
“You should know by now I’m not pregnant.”
“But you don’t know-Finn and I almost slept together.”
“We kissed. Undressed each other. Right before, he backed out.”
“That’s when he told me he was married.”
Rue said after hearing that, she was furious and about to leave.
But Finn stopped her.
“I’ll give you a hundred grand. Pretend you’re pregnant. Play along. Deal?”
Rue leaned back slightly. Looked out the window.
Double Life
Chapter 9
“I asked him why. He said he wanted a divorce. But he wanted to know if his wife wanted one too.”
Rue laughed.
“Isn’t he messed up?”
“Honestly, I don’t even know why I’m telling you this. Probably because I respect your choice. So stick with it.”
That night Rue stayed in the guest room.
By the time I woke up, she’d already cleaned everything. Even took out the trash from last night.
She probably had her own story too.
Later, when my kid was running around everywhere, Rue came over more and more. We became close friends.
That’s when she told me-when Finn asked her to fake a pregnancy, she almost beat him up.
Because she’d probably never be able to get pregnant.
She’d been trapped by some scumbag for three years.
The guy was a freeloader. Lived off Rue. But looked down on her for working at clubs.
Once, after they fought for half a month, Rue found out she was pregnant.
The guy scoffed. “How do I know it’s mine?”
She was young back then. Young, reckless, fearless. To what extent?
Rue slit her wrist in front of him to prove she was faithful.
Then got an abortion to make him regret it.
But honestly, none of that affected him at all.
Later, not long after, Rue got pregnant again.
She told him, “Let’s get married.”
He was annoyed. “Married? With what? Can’t even afford to raise it. Why keep it? Get rid of it.”
