Chapter 5
When I saw Madison Clarke’s name written clear as day in the spouse section, my hands started shaking uncontrollably.
The registration date was the day after their “reunion”!
All the puzzle pieces suddenly clicked into place.
Why Jasper hired Madison at the company.
Why his threats to fire her were always empty.
I’d been played like a complete fool for AN ENTIRE YEAR!
I stumbled out of the office in a daze and caught Madison sneaking around with a thermos.
Steam was rising from it, and she looked panicked.
“Must’ve been exhausting pretending all year while you were married to Jasper.”
I stepped closer, my voice ice-cold.
“From waitress to director-you two really put on quite the show to bleed me dry.”
Madison’s face shifted, and she finally dropped the act, smirking triumphantly.
“Took you long enough to figure it out.”
She paused, then smirk again:
“Pathetic how his GIRLFRIEND never even saw his marriage certificate.”
“Why?”
I could hear my own voice shaking.
“Why? Hah!”
Her smile turned vicious.
“If you weren’t still useful, you think I’d waste A year kissing your ass?”
“Here’s the truth-once Jasper signs that Kingsley contract today, he’s DONE with you.”
She suddenly ripped off the thermos lid.
“This was for watering their plants, but now YOU’ll do!”

Scalding water came flying at my face.
I threw my hands up to block it.
My skin felt like it was being stabbed by A million needles.
The burning pain exploded instantly, and everything went black.
I screamed and started swinging at Madison.
Then everything spun around me.
My head slammed hard into the wall.
Through the haze, Jasper rushed over to help Madison up.
He looked down at me crumpled on the floor, his voice terrifyingly calm:
“You slapped her, she burned you. Now you’re even.”
Even?!
The pain was so intense I couldn’t speak. I could only glare at him.
This was the man I’d loved for five years-watching someone disfigure me with boiling water and calling it “EVEN.”
He looked away dismissively.
“It’s just some water. Why are you being so dramatic?”
Madison suddenly clutched her stomach and moaned.
“Jasper, my stomach really hurts.”
Jasper immediately scooped her up, glancing at me one last time before leaving.
“Liv, stop being ridiculous. We’ll talk about this when we get back.”
They disappeared down the hallway.
I used the last of my strength to make a call: “Dad, someone burned my face off…”
When I opened my eyes again, I was in the hospital.
A doctor stood by my bed, quietly updating my father:
“Ms. Carter has second-degree burns on her face and a mild concussion.”
“The biggest concern is her emotional state-she cried through the entire procedure…”

My mom’s exhausted face came into view.
Her eyes were red and swollen as she gently touched my bandaged hands.
“My poor baby, you’ve been through hell.”
“I should’ve gone with you to Manhattan when you said you were moving.”
Dad let out a cold laugh.
”
“I invited Stellar here today because I wanted to meet this future son-in-law.”
“Never thought that bastard would have the balls to let some worthless piece of trash attack my daughter.”
His fingers drummed against his Rolex with sharp, metallic clicks.
I recognized that sound-it meant someone was about to get destroyed.
The last time Dad got this pissed was when his business rival had me kidnapped and locked in some warehouse basement.
When Dad found me, he radiated pure menace.
“I left you alone out of courtesy. But you fucked with my daughter?”
That night, the guy’s entire empire got burned to the ground.
The crushing debt drove him to blow his brains out.
His wife couldn’t handle the fallout and took a bottle of pills, taking their kids with her.
Dad always kept things quiet.
But when he decided to end someone, they stayed ended.
Even so, that would be TOO EASY for Jasper and Madison.
I spoke quietly, my voice barely a rasp.
“Dad, don’t waste your time. I’ll handle this myself.”
Dad studied my face for a long moment.
“Fine.”
One simple word, but the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.
I knew what that meant-whatever I did the
