Chapter 4
Except for Jasper and Madison, every single employee looked absolutely shocked.
Then the whispers started.
“Are you kidding me? Everyone knows Ms. Carter did all the work on this project.”
Jasper kept a straight face, gushing to the media about Madison’s “contributions,” then dropped this bomb:
“Effective immediately, Liv Carter is stepping down, and Madison Clarke is our new Head of Product Development.”
My nails dug into my palms, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the suffocating rage in my chest.
Madison stood next to him, barely containing her smug smile.
The second the event ended, before the crowd even cleared out-
I marched straight up and slapped Madison across the face.
“Stealing other people’s work-got no shame?”
Madison held her cheek, lips pressed tight, saying nothing.
But Jasper beside her lost his mind.
He shoved me so hard I stumbled backward.
“Liv! Why are you taking this out on her? This was MY decision!”
“You kicked her out, left her homeless-how’s she supposed to survive in Manhattan on an assistant’s salary?”
His self-righteousness made me laugh bitterly.
“Contributions? You mean like when she poisoned the whole team with bad coffee, or when she short-circuited the entire floor trying to use a hot pot?”
I bit down hard, trying not to let my voice crack.
“What gives you the right to hand over a year of my blood, sweat, and tears?! Jasper, how DARE you?!”
Jasper looked at me like I was the crazy one.
“Liv, when did you become so heartless?”
“It’s just one patent. Everything I do is for you anyway.”
“You used to run yourself ragged with all that research. Once we’re married, I want you to relax and just be Mrs. Reed. Why do you insist on killing yourself with work?”
Then he grabbed Madison and walked away without looking back.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
Chapter 4
It was Dad’s lawyer.
“Miss, we found some things. You need to get back here ASAP for a face-to-face,”
1 watched them walk away and wiped the tears from my eyes.
“Tine. I’m on my way.”
I’m the only daughter of D.C.’s richest man.
I was planning to tell Jasper that secret on our wedding day.
Too bad that’ll never happen now.
After landing in D.C., I was supposed to see Dad first.
But his secretary said the Chairman was in an important meeting and asked me to wait.
I nodded and headed to the legal department instead.
But turning the corner, I literally ran into Jasper and Madison with their whole crew.
So his “business trip to D.C.” was actually coming to my dad’s company.
Seeing the files in my hand, his expression darkened.
“Liv, are you seriously gonna keep this drama going? Flying all the way to D.C. to job hunt instead of waiting for me at home?”
I almost burst out laughing.
