Chapter 3
For the next few days, I played up being sick and stayed holed up in my room.
Karen and Steve were freaking out internally, but they still had to put on their caring parent act.
Finally, after a week of this, Karen couldn’t take it anymore. She snuck into my room and slipped me a thousand bucks. “Sweetie, you’re leaving for abroad soon, and I heard there’s so much stuff you can’t buy overseas.”
“Why don’t you take this money and go shopping?”
“Don’t tell Tyler about this he doesn’t get spending money like this, okay? This is just between us girls.”
I’d heard this song and dance a million times before.
Used to totally fall for it too – thought I was getting the premium treatment while Tyler was stuck with knockoff clothes and cheap shoes that Karen and Steve bought him on the down-low.
But after reading those Reddit posts, I knew the truth.
I was the one getting played this whole time. And I knew damn well this thousand dollars wasn’t some generous gift – it was blood money to get me out of the house so she could destroy my future.
I stared at the cash but didn’t take it. “Mom, you’re always giving me money on the side like this. It makes me feel guilty. I’m gonna need every penny for study abroad expenses anyway, so I’ll pass.”
But Karen literally shoved the bills into my hand. “You’re a hundred times better than your brother – of course we want to spoil you!”
She sounded so sincere, but I caught her eyes constantly darting over to my nightstand. The second she spotted the key sitting on top, her whole body relaxed.
Of course.
Last time, I’d made a big show of locking my passport away right in front of her. Without that key, she’d have to break the lock, and then her whole “oops, you left it lying around” story would fall apart.
Thinking this, I smirked internally. “Well, if you put it that way, I guess I’ll take it. But… Mom, could you maybe give me a little more cash?”
This was the first time I’d ever asked Karen for extra money.
So she froze there.
In her mind, every dollar in this house belonged to Tyler. The only reason she was even offering me this thousand was to hure me out so she could destroy my life.
While she was still hesitating, Steve couldn’t take it anymore.

Chapter 3
He burst into my room and literally Venmo’d me ten grand on the spot. “Your mom doesn’t have that much cash on her right now, but Daddy’s got you covered. You’re our precious little princess we’d give you anything!”
I grinned and thanked them both, then closed my door to get dressed.
But instead of leaving alone like they expected, I dragged both Tyler (who was glued to his Xbox) and Steve (who was pretending to watch TV) along with me.
“It’s way too hot outside and I don’t want to deal with an Uber. Dad, you’re driving me to the mall!”
“And Tyler, stop being a gaming addict for five minutes and come carry my bags. Don’t forget – Mom and Dad only had you to be my personal servant anyway!”
Tyler’s face twisted with disgust and he let out this bitter laugh, but after some pointed looks from Karen and Steve, he gritted his teeth and agreed.
After all, once I left the house, my life was over.
I’d spend the rest of my days thinking it was my own fault for being careless with my passport. I’d be their obedient little puppet forever – working whatever job they picked, marrying whoever they chose, spending my entire existence propping up Tyler’s dreams.
Then Tyler and Steve followed me out with these super awkward expressions on their faces.
The second we got to the parking garage, I stopped dead in my tracks and stared down at my shoes. “Shit, I forgot something important. You guys wait here – I’ll be right back!”
Before either of them could react, I was already sprinting toward the elevator.”
Tyler and Steve tried to follow, but the doors closed right in their faces. I could see them frantically texting Karen through the
