Chapter 5
I didn’t answer – just pulled my passport out of my purse and waved it in front of all their faces.
“See? My passport has been in my bag this whole time!”
Karen looked even more confused. “But that’s impossible… I personally grabbed it and-”
Just as Karen was about to blow her own cover, I quickly cut her off.
“Mom, I think you made a mistake. Looking at those shredded pieces, I can’t even make out any words. How are you so sure that was a passport?”
Karen stammered, “I… when I first pulled it out, it wasn’t completely destroyed yet. I could still see the top half of the word ‘passport,’ so I was absolutely certain.”
I waved my hand dismissively. “You probably just saw what you expected to see – maybe it was some other reddish paper. You’ve been so worried about that time you almost put my passport in the laundry basket that your mind played tricks on
you.”
“Don’t stress about it, Mom. My passport is fine, you didn’t do anything wrong, and you definitely don’t need to hurt yourself
over this.”
That makes Karen didn’t know what to say and shot Steve a desperate look for help.
Steve couldn’t even pretend to comfort Karen anymore.
He crouched down by the coffee table and started poking through the passport remains. “Look at this color, this texture – th is definitely a passport. There’s no way we’re wrong about this.”
All three of them just stared at each other.
I leaned in to examine the scraps too, then frowned thoughtfully. “Well that’s weird… wait, are there two passports in this
house?”
With that, I looked meaningfully at Tyler.
Karen seemed to realize what I was getting at, her voice shaking. “Tyler… only you and Madison have passports in this family If Madison’s passport is right here, then yours…”
Tyler’s smug expression instantly drained of all color.
Without saying a word, he bolted to his bedroom.
Seconds later, we heard an anguished scream from his room: “WHERE THE FUCK IS MY PASSPORT?!”
Tyler completely lost his shit. That’s when I realized “seeing red” isn’t just an expression – his face was literally turning purp with rage.

Chapter 5
Karen finally connected the dots that the destroyed passport might be Tyler’s. “Tyler, honey, let me explain-”
But Tyler was way past listening to explanations.
He came storming out looking absolutely feral.
“Explain? Explain WHAT?”
“You knew damn well that passport already had my visa in it – it’s supposed to be untouchable! Once it’s lost or damaged, I have to start the entire process over from scratch.”
“If it was just a little damaged, maybe the visa would still be valid, but this pile of confetti? It’s basically the same as losing it completely. Everything I worked for is GONE.”
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done to me?!”
“How the hell am I supposed to study abroad now? By the time I get a new visa approved, I’ll be fucking ancient!”
Karen and Steve were speechless.
And honestly, I got it. They’d planned to destroy MY passport and make me miserable for life, but somehow their foolproof plan backfired and they ended up ruining Tyler’s future instead.
Talk about karma being a bitch.
I almost burst out laughing, but I forced myself to look angry at Tyler instead. “Tyler! How dare you talk to Mom like that?”
“This was obviously an accident. You must have left your passport lying around somewhere, and that’s how Mom accidentall washed it. You have some nerve blaming her for this!”
