Chapter 7
All three of them were staring at me like predators ready to pounce.
From their expressions, it was clear that if I admitted to anything, they were about to tear me apart.
I didn’t confirm or deny anything.
Instead, I let out a deep sigh.
“Oh wait, now I remember.”
“Last night when Dad cut up that fruit for me, I felt bad that Tyler didn’t get any, so I brought some to his room. That’s when I saw his passport just lying on his desk.”
“It looked like it was about to fall into the trash can next to it so I grabbed it to keep it safe. But I was worried he’d be careless with it again, so I put it in my nightstand for safekeeping.”
Obviously, none of them believed me.
I didn’t bother explaining further. Instead, I turned the tables on them. “Do you guys really think I’m the type of person who would sabotage Tyler?”
Karen hesitated. “Maybe you already knew about-”
I cut her off immediately. “If I already knew what you were planning, do you think I’d just sit around the house waiting for you to screw me over?”
All three of them went quiet.
I sighed sadly. “In my heart, you’ve always been the best family I could ask for. I…”
“I honestly thought you guys favored me over Tyler. I felt so bad for him that I was always planning ways to help him more in the future. How could I have known you were all such good actors?”
At this point, I couldn’t keep talking. I covered my face and ran back to my bedroom.
A few minutes later, Tyler also stormed off to his room. The whole house fell into this eerie silence.
It wasn’t until dinnertime that Steve, Karen, and Tyler knocked on my door. All three of them looked uncomfortable, and Tyler was actually holding a plate of what they claimed were my favorite foods.
They looked like they were coming to apologize.
I didn’t say anything, just sat up calmly on my bed.

Chapter 7
Karen spoke first, setting the food on my nightstand. “Sweet. I made all your favorites – Brussels sprouts, baked salmon bones, and that dry grilled chicken breast you absolutely love…”
“This afternoon, when we said all those awful things, we totally didn’t mean it. We were just freaking out and saying crazy stuff.”
“We really don’t want you to study abroad, but it’s not about Tyler – it’s because we’re being selfish parents. You’re our baby girl, our everything!”
“That’s why we had you take that gap year when you were sick. The thought of you going so far away just tears us apart inside.”
I didn’t respond or call out their lies.
Instead, I looked at the food and sighed. “Mom, Dad… do you want to know something? I actually hate Brussels sprouts. Every time you make me eat them, I want to gag.”
“I only ate them because you said they were ‘superfoods.””
“And I love salmon, but you always give me the parts with all the tiny bones while Tyler gets the nice fillets. Do you know how many times I’ve had to pick bones out of my mouth?”
“And this,” I pointed at the chicken breast. “I love chicken thighs and wings – the juicy parts. This cardboard-dry chicken breast has always been nasty to me. I only ate it because you said dark meat was ‘too fatty’ and white meat was better for girls.”
