Chapter 9
They spent almost the entire night plotting.
It wasn’t until the next day that all three of them woke me up
“Alright, we’ve made our decision. If you tutor Tyler for another year, we’ll give you twenty thousand dollars and promise you won’t have to be his little helper forever!”
“That’s more than generous, right?”
“Twenty grand is way better than whatever you’d get from studying abroad!”
I didn’t argue, just slowly held up three fingers. “I want thirty thousand. Don’t even try to say you don’t have it – I know exactly how much money this family has saved up.”
Karen immediately refused. “Absolutely not! We only have thirty thousand in our savings account, and everything else went toward Tyler’s college fund!”
Of course I knew that.
Karen had posted all these financial details in her Reddit confessions.
That’s how I knew I was never really in their study abroad plans – this thirty grand was always meant to be Tyler’s tuition and living expenses.
I smiled sweetly. “You can always choose not to pay me.”
“But I recorded everything you guys said yesterday. If you don’t agree to my terms, I’ll post the video everywhere
and ruin your lives.”
I played a little snippet of the recording for them.
They spent another ten minutes calling me manipulative and scheming, but eventually they caved. After all, they’d already figured out how to steal the money back and punish me later.
What’s ten thousand more or less when they were planning to take it all anyway?
Probably worried I’d trick them somehow, they insisted on doing the exchange simultaneously – money for my passport and the video.
The second thirty thousand hit my bank account, Steve, Karen, and Tyler burned my passport to ash right in front of me and deleted the video from my phone.
Now that we’d completely dropped all pretenses, Steve and Haren stopped acting like loving parents.

Chapter 9
Their attitude toward me did a complete 180 they were cold and nasty every day, forcing me to do every household chore imaginable.
All “for my own good,” of course.
Karen sat there scrolling through her phone while watching me scrub dishes. “With your shitty attitude, you better learn how to keep house if you ever want to find a husband,
“Since you’re not going to college, being a stay-at-home mom is pretty much your only career path now.”
I didn’t get mad.
I just did the work obediently.
It wasn’t time to reveal my plan yet – I needed to be patient a little longer.
As news of everyone else’s study abroad acceptances started rolling in, Tyler became increasingly unhinged. To cheer him up, Steve and Karen took time off work to plan a little getaway trip.
Before they left, they made sure to give me a detailed list of expectations.
“Just because we’re not home doesn’t mean you can slack off”
“Exactly, you need to keep up with all the housework AND create a comprehensive tutoring schedule for Tyler. Don’t forget – if Tyler doesn’t get into an elite school, we’re taking that thirty grand back.”
I nodded eagerly and promised to be the perfect daughter.
