Chapter 445
:
Bernard’s eyes were as sharp as knives, cold and deadly.
Seth froze on the spot, completely stunned.
“Great-Grandpa!” Seth blurted out, instinctively shooting Bernard a pleading look for help.
Lucas snoozed on.

The sound of snoring came from the main seat. The old patriarch had actually nodded off right there, cane in hand.
Seth was completely dumbfounded.
Bernard cast a glance out of the corner of his eye at the guard stationed by Salem’s door. The guard gave a barely noticeable shake of his head.
Still not awake.
Bernard’s eyes dropped.
He said nothing, the silence thick in the air.
Stella had made it clear last night that Salem had been exhausted for years and finally got a decent night’s sleep. No way Bernard would let anyone mess with that.
Bernard was just about to say something when a lazy voice drifted down from the stairs, “Who’s barking like a dog down there?”
Everyone instinctively looked up.
Stella appeared, having swapped her Denim Kraft limited-edition green dress for a loose white shirt and high- waisted jeans. She was casually holding Lucas’s hand as they made their way downstairs, with John following respectfully, behind, his face as stern as ever.
His expression remained completely blank.
Her morning mood was especially foul.
Seth snapped, “You!”
He was about to blow his top.
But halfway through, he just stopped short.
Seth thought, ‘Wait, why does she look so familiar?’
Seth’s
eyes widened in shock. “Hold on, weren’t you on TV last night?” He finally put two and two together. ‘No way, that’s the girl who did ambidextrous calligraphy at the heritage gala!’

But Stella didn’t even bother with him. She let go of Lucas’s hand, and the fair, squishy kid scampered over to Bernard, plopping himself down right next to him with a soft thud.
Stella, meanwhile, settled into the single sofa on the left, crossing her legs with a boss’s swagger.
She cast a lazy glance at John.
John immediately handed her an apple from the table.
Stella swept a chilly, bossy gaze over the living room, eyeing the Harper family’s side relatives, a bunch of young guys, all looking sharp.
They were dressed to impress, hair slicked back, looking like they were here for a fashion show instead of visiting a patient.
Stella took a crisp, indifferent bite of her apple.
She kept eating.
“Go ahead, keep talking,” she said coolly.
Seth frowned.
For a second, he couldn’t make heads or tails of what was happening.
But Bernard was calm as ever. He looked straight at Seth, his hand rock steady as he picked up his tea. “Seth, why did you bring Great-Grandpa here? What are you really after?”
Hearing that, Seth snapped back to attention, ignoring everything else. “Bernard…”
He forced a smile.
He continued, “Your side of the family’s got barely any people left. Salem’s been sick for more than ten years, and now he’s almost fifty. Plus, you’ve got an important job now…”
Stella took another bite of her apple, totally messing with Seth’s flow. He couldn’t help frowning, paused for a
beat.
Then he continued, “For the sake of the Harper family, your branch can’t just end here. Better than letting everything fall into the hands of outsiders…”
Seth put on his most heartfelt act, but he still shot a guarded look at Sebastian. The message was obvious.
The Gray brothers basically grew up at Bernard’s place. Seth was scared stiff that once Salem passed away, Bernard would hand everything over to Sebastian, and the rest of them would be left with squat.
Stella bit into her apple again.
She looked on, unfazed.
She picked up on it.

‘So this is all about forcing an adoption?’ Stella thought.

Finally, Seth put it bluntly, “Why not just pick one of the kids from the side branch and make him your legal heir?”
Thud, something slipped off Stella’s side.
Seth snapped his head around, annoyed. ‘Why is she always causing a commotion?’ But then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw what it was, and his jaw hit the floor.
His face went stiff.
What hit the floor wasn’t an apple. It was a gun.
John rolled his eyes.
He reached for his lower back out of reflex.
Nothing there, just as he feared.
The guards just stared, totally at a loss for words.
‘Should we just act like we didn’t see anything?’ they thought.
‘Or maybe keep acting like we didn’t see anything?’ the idea echoed among them.
‘Yeah… Best to keep pretending we saw nothing at all, they silently agreed.
“Sorry about that,” Stella drawled, barely reacting. She bent down, scooped up the gun from the floor, and casually tossed it onto the coffee table like it was no big deal.
And wouldn’t one know it, the muzzle ended up pointed straight at Seth.
Seth was stunned.
Stella fixed Seth with a cold, icy stare and bit into her apple again, totally unfazed.
Seth’s heart skipped a beat.
The old man’s snoring stopped for a split second when the gun hit the table. His eyelids cracked open just a sliver, then he went right back to “sleep.”
‘Must’ve eaten too much this morning,’ the old man thought to himself.
He thought, ‘So sleepy….
‘Seriously, I’m just way too tired…’
He snoozed on.
“Sebastian, which one do you think we should pick?” Stella asked casually, leaning slightly to the side.

…
Sebastian looked over at her.
Just one look, and he instantly understood.

The guards nearby started to get nervous. ‘Wait, are they actually going through with this?’ Just as one of them was about to speak up, Bernard shot them a look that said, “Don’t even think about it,” and they instantly fell silent.
Sebastian gave the room a chilly once-over, then just pointed at someone without even blinking. “That one.”
The guy Sebastian pointed at looked as if he’d just hit the jackpot.
He couldn’t wipe the smug look off his face. “I…” he started, practically bursting with excitement.
But Seth looked annoyed. This was definitely not his first choice.
This guy was way too much of a wild card.
But before the guy could even finish his sentence, Stella rose from her seat with a laid-back air, still clutching her half-eaten apple. The whole room froze, everyone staring in confusion, trying to figure out what she was about to do.
While everyone was still caught off guard, Stella sauntered right up to the young man Sebastian had singled out, raised her hand, and set the apple squarely on top of his head.
“You!” The guy’s eyes widened, and he was just about to react. Stella cut him off, “Don’t move.”
She hit him with a frosty, commanding glare that made him freeze on the spot. He didn’t dare twitch.
So there he stood, with that half-eaten apple balanced on his head, not even breathing too hard.
He looked like a walking joke, seriously.
“Everyone knows Bernard, he spent his whole life on the battlefield, unyielding to the core,” Stella said, her tone cool as she strolled back to the table.
She continued, “And Salem? He went off the rails for over ten years, but never bowed to the enemy, not even once.”
As she spoke, she picked up the gun from the table with a lazy motion.
“If you want in on Bernard’s bloodline, just flapping your lips isn’t enough,” Stella said, her tone pure ice.
Her voice was cold as ice. She lifted her chin and, with one hand, aimed the gun right at the young guy. Everyone gasped.
The guy freaked out, throwing his hands in the air like he was surrendering, eyes about to pop out of his head.
“What are you doing!?” Seth yelped, totally stunned. Then he tried to play it cool with a shaky laugh. “Come on, that thing’s gotta be a toy, right?”
