Chapter 453 The Past
The mood shifted in an instant.
“Not answering?” The voice behind the mask was rough and hoarse as always, but to Stella, it carried a
mocking edge.
Stella froze.
She picked up.
The moment the video call connected, the sound of a man’s ragged breathing filled the speaker.
He said, “Little Shark…”
To anyone listening, it sounded kind of intimate.
The man, who’d been keeping out of view, narrowed his dark eyes, his gaze growing even colder.
But Stella’s face instantly frosted over. “Oakley, where. are you?”
‘That background…’ Stella thought, her mind racing.
On the other end, Killer Whale was in a black shirt, his strikingly handsome face fully visible, not hidden in the
shadows.
One hand gripped a gun, the other, covered in blood, held a cigarette, though his hand was visibly shaking.” How did you die?” he asked.
Stella shot back, “None of your business.”
Stella shot a cold glance behind him. “Seven o’clock.”
Killer Whale didn’t even blink. In the next instant, he fired at the seven o’clock position, taking out the would-be attacker sneaking up on him.
“I’m fucking asking you, how did you die?!” he yelled.
He leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.
Because of the time difference, it was already deep into the night over there, but the massive explosion and roaring flames lit up the whole night like it was day, throwing Killer Whale’s sharp, almost ethereal features into stark relief.
Right then, he looked just like a kid, his eyes brimming with big, fat tears.
Stella froze.
‘Quit crying!’ Stella’ thought.
“Killer Whale, I’m asking you one more time, where are you?” Stella’s face was icy, but Lion could tell she was actually being a bit more patient than usual.
‘Guess I’ll cut him some slack since he’s crying, Lion thought.
Killer Whale said, “Bloodthorn Syndicate.”
She thought, ‘Bloodthorn Syndicate was a new player in the Golden Triangle these past few years, and at one point, they ran the world’s biggest arms factory.’
Stella thought, ‘Why was?’
Because a year ago, Killer Whale’s Chaos Syndicate blew it up.
As for why he blew the place sky-high?
It’s still a total mystery.
With Chaos Syndicate always stirring up trouble, Stella was pretty sure Killer Whale didn’t do it out of some sense of justice.
“Why’d you blow up the factory back then the asked offhandedla

Killer Whale didn’t say anything.
‘Seriously? She’s asking that now?’ Killer Whale thought.
‘Doesn’t she see I’m freaking crying here?’ Killer Whale grumbled inwardly.
Still, after a beat, Killer Whale mumbled something anyway.
Stella said, “What did you say?”
She thought, ‘What’s he talking about?’
The next second, Killer Whale shot back, totally unapologetic, “Because I wanted to!”
Stella froze.
Her fists clenched instantly.
Killer Whale’s expression darkened.
He’d never admit it, but one night, Bloodthorn Syndicate’s second-in-command got wasted on tequila at his own bar, pointing at the TV and mouthing off about Stella from the Dorestan auction video.
All that trash talk was straight-up dirty, X-rated fantasies.
That very night, Killer Whale rolled in with his Chaos Syndicate crew, packing enough firepower to rival a nuke, and blew Bloodthorn Syndicate’s arms factory to smithereens.
He even personally took out the second-in-command and hung that loser’s head right on their front gate for everyone to see.
From that day on, Chaos Syndicate and Bloodthorn Syndicate were sworn enemies, no turning back, no mercy.
It was a blood feud, no mercy, no turning back.
Stella said, “You know Bloodthorn Syndicate’s got Monterra backing them, right? And that arms factory was about to ship out a batch of secret weapons to the Middle East.”
‘Does he really think Bloodthorn Syndicate got this big on their own?’ Stella thought.
It was because Monterra, always stirring up trouble, was pulling the strings behind the scenes, using Bloodthorn Syndicate as a front to flood the region with weapons. Killer Whale’s move was basically a direct challenge to Monterra.
Killer Whale let out a cold laugh. “Who cares who’s backing them?”
Stella froze.
Her knuckles popped and cracked, one after another, loud and sharp.
If Killer Whale were right in front of her, she’d stomp his face into the floor with her heel, so hard he’d be part of the damn tile.
He asked, “So, how did you die?”
Suddenly, a rough, hoarse voice cut in.
Killer Whale was stunned.
Stella froze.
The next moment, the man wearing the Lion mask appeared on screen, his gaze fixed squarely on Stella. Killer Whale said, “Lion?” He recognized him immediately. “Why’s he with you? And… What about Sebastian?” Stella froze.
‘God, my head hurts, Stella thought, feeling a headache coming on.
‘Can they both just shut up?’ Stella thought, exasperated.
“What did Bloodthorn Syndicate’s boss tell you?” Stella asked.
Her face was cold as ice. She’d already pieced things together just from the background when she answered Killer Whale’s call.

Killer Whale’s face instantly darkened.
“He said you died because you were always cleaning up my mess,” Killer Whale said.
Stella froze.
The guy next to her was practically drowning in bad vibes. She sighed and turned her head.
The two of them locked eyes.
Stella rubbed her nose, a little awkwardly. “Not exactly.”
Lion didn’t say a word.
Killer Whale snapped. “Ever since you kicked me off the Isle of Solitude, what gives you the right to stick your nose in my business?”
He thought, ‘Ever since I got back to Chaos Syndicate, I’ve been causing trouble everywhere, and she hasn’t even looked my way once!’
As he said this, he spun around and, with a quick shot, took out Bloodthorn Syndicate’s boss’s right-hand man, who was trying to ambush him.
“Your gun’s out of ammo,” Stella said lazily.
Killer Whale snarked, “Who asked you?”
But his hands didn’t even pause. With a couple of crisp snaps, he swapped out the magazine in one fluid motion.
Stella froze.
Her urge to wring his neck was getting out of hand.
“Oh, you wanna know why? Maybe because your dad’s been wiring me a cool billion every year since you bailed,” Stella said.
Killer Whale didn’t say anything.
Lion was speechless.
‘Well… that’s a pretty straightforward reason,’ Lion thought.
‘Convincing, Lion mused.
Killer Whale turned, staring at her through the screen in disbelief. “So it’s really just about the money?”
Stella replied calmly, “Why else?”
Killer Whale’s eyes reddened even more, his sharp features looking like they might crack. “Shark, do you even see me as your…”
Lion’s veins bulged under his mask, his whole vibe about to snap. Right as he was losing it, Killer Whale blurted out the rest. “Little brother?!”
Lion didn’t say a word.
Everything screeched to a halt.
Lion said, “Wait a second. What did you just say?”
He wondered if he’d heard wrong.
Killer Whale said, “None of your damn business!”
Stella’s patience was about to hit zero. She shut her eyes, silently counting down from ten.
She took a deep breath.
“You were the one who dragged me back to the Isle of Solitude and swore I’d be your little brother forever!” Killer Whale snapped.
Yeah, he was seriously salty about it.
Stella froze.

Stella thought, ‘No.’
Back when she bought him out of that cage at the black market, she told him he’d be her sidekick, not her actual little brother.
Just because the words sound similar doesn’t mean they’re the same. One’s a little brother, the other’s just a lackey.
Stella said, “Are you out of your mind?”
He could’ve been rolling in billions, living it up as the Chaos Syndicate’s golden boy, but nope, he ditched all that just to be her sidekick on the Isle of Solitude, running errands like some loyal mutt.
And for fun, he’d even sneak laxatives into Geezers’ food just to mess with them?
‘Seriously, what kind of person does this stuff?’ Stella thought, completely fed up.
If she’d known he was this much trouble, she never would’ve let her soft side win and “ransom” Oakley out of that cage in the black market, where he’d been stuck since he was a kid after getting snatched by Chaos Syndicate’s arch-enemy.
She’d kept a stone-cold face and fought her way down the whole street just to drag him out.
She picked him because he was raised with wolves and barely spoke a word.
He was the perfect quiet sidekick.
Who would’ve thought he’d grow up to be such a handful?
Killer Whale shot a dark look at Lion. After a moment, he took a deep breath. He said, “I… I don’t mind being part of your little arrangement. You can spend Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with Sebastian.
“Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays with Lion, but Sundays… Those are mine. You have to spend them with
me.”
Stella was utterly confused.
Lion wondered, ‘Wait, what?’
“Just to eat together!” Killer Whale finally blurted out.
Stella froze.
Lion was stunned.
It was so awkward.
Silence hung over the night like a bridge, awkward and unbreakable.
Just then, there was a click as Killer Whale snapped a screenshot with his phone. “If you don’t say yes, I’ll send this pic straight to Sebastian.” He snorted, totally convinced his threat would work. “Bet you’re freaking out now, huh?”
Stella froze.
Lion didn’t know what to say.
Stella just took a deep breath and slammed the call shut.
She blocked him instantly.
The vibe in the car was thick with tension.
But compared to all the snark from before, things had flipped to a whole new level of weird.
A moment later, Lion was just about to say something when his phone suddenly rang. He glanced down, and the words died in his throat.
Then he turned the screen toward Stella.
On the screen was the screenshot Killer Whale had just taken. He’d sneakily cropped Lion out and sloppily pasted himself in, all crooked and off-center.

And the best part? He even went the extra mile to slap a beauty filter on Stella.
Stella froze.
‘I’ll never get how that little psycho’s brain works, Stella thought, totally exasperated.
“Let’s go home,” Stella said.
She barely managed to hold back the urge to wring Killer Whale’s neck, finally finding her voice again.
Night had fallen.
It was in the Harmony Scenic Area.
At the villa, after her shower, Stella strolled out, drying her hair with one hand and phone in the other. She fired off a message to her crew, telling them to go help Killer Whale and handle the mess at Bloodthorn Syndicate. By the stone table, Lucas, fair-skinned and soft, stood there with his arms crossed, lips pressed into a little
pout.
He stared at Stella.
Beside him, Fabian, the big guy, had his arms crossed too.
He stared at Stella, too.
On the stone table, the plain plant, which should’ve been chilling in the moonlight, had totally gone full Peashooter mode, spitting out little yellow beans into a wooden box that was almost overflowing.
“Yes!” Lucas pumped his little fists, cheering it on.
Fabian caught sight of Stella out of the corner of his eye and snapped to attention. “Ms. Carter.”
“Where’s Sebastian?” Stella scooped up Lucas as he ran over, then gave the place a lazy once-over. No sign of Sebastian anywhere.
Fabian still wasn’t used to their intimacy. He scratched his head and nodded toward the study. “Hudson and Murray are here, talking with Mr. Gray.”
Stella just gave a noncommittal hum and sat down at the table.
The plain plant was speechless.
‘I just wanna slack off, the plain plant grumbled to itself.
Stella didn’t even bother to lift her eyelids, just tapped her fingers on the table. Instantly, the plain plant, which had been trying to slack off, perked right up and got back to firing beans like a little Peashooter.
‘Typical, capitalists really do live off us grass!’ the plain plant muttered, full of righteous indignation.
Soon enough, both wooden boxes were packed to the brim. After giving its all, the plain plant was totally spent collapsing with a dramatic flop, wilted and yellow.
‘Playing dead is my best defense!’ the plain plant thought, trying to be dramatic.
The plain plant whimpered to itself.
Stella took her time and snapped the lid shut on the wooden box.
She’d bring these to the special ops division tomorrow. They’d come in handy for their training session.
Her phone lit up with a flashing red scorpion icon.
Blade: [There’s a rat in Chaos Syndicate.]
Shark: [Hold your position.]
Blade: [Roger that.]
Stella leaned back in her lounge chair, eyes closed, taking a moment to recharge.
‘How did I die?’ Stella wondered, her mind drifting.
Her long lashes cast shadows over her flawless, porcelain face.
