Tessa was challenging my determination. I didn’t know if she said that she could date someone only to irk me or she actually thought about it, either way, I wouldn’t accept it.
She was mine. The day we exchanged the vows, I knew I’d not let another man near her.
“Mom, I am home!”
My disturbing thoughts came to an abrupt halt as I heard a slightly mature but same voice of my son after years. My head snapped in the direction of the front gate from where an older version of Lucas entering.
He was too focused on his mother that he didn’t notice me. He looked more like me, I could see my younger version in my son. It was definite that one day, he’d break many hearts.
“Luke…”
I whispered his name as my throat was constricted.
And it caught his attention. His attention shifted from him mother to me and his whole posture stiffened, his eyes widened in shock.
“Dad??”
He blinked his eyes trying to process everything as he looked dumfounded.
“Yes, my son. I am here and…” My voice choked, “You look bigger.” My eyes moistened again.
He was my first born. I had loved him more than anyone in this world, he was my world until I realized my feelings for Tessa and then Lena came. They three become my lifelines.
He dropped his school bag
on the ground and then looked at his mother.
“Mom, what is Dad doing here?” He asked Tessa.
My heart dropped because he was mature enough to understand the turbulence in his parents‘ marriage. He held me accountable for the collapse of our marriage.
“Lucas, please, talk to him nicely.” Tessa pleaded him.
He shook his head, “No, he should go back to his girlfriend. We’re happy here without him.
I felt like the air was knocked out of my lungs.
“Lucas, behave.” Tessa scolded him.
He didn’t say another word but the coldness on his face was enough to tell that he’d not forgive me easily. Storming past us, he went inside the house. I never felt this helpless and defeated in my entire life.
I could win against any challenge but it was different. I was unarmoured in front of my own flesh.
“Logan, please, let me go and talk to him first. He isn’t like this. I think he’s just overwhelmed.” She said to me helplessly.
“It’s okay. I am fine.” I assured her but it was a lie. I was deeply hurt to see how my son discarded me. Was it too obvious that I blind sided Raelynn?
Tessa would never turn him against me. He had been an observant child ever since his sensory motors developed.

Tessa followed him whereas I stood in the garden observing the quiet and serene surrounding but there was a silent storm inside me which was getting bigger and fierce with passing time.
What if Lucas reject me?
I’d lose the only chance to win my family back because Tessa would only side with our kids. Her selfless love for our children had proved over times. Her world revolved around them and I’d not complain.
She found the love that she craved in Lucas. The baby loved her unconditionally. I was respectful towards her. Fulfilled all my duties as a husband but I never gave her the comfort, the hug she needed. She found everything in my son and soon they became each other’s world.
I was sidelined when I chose a wrong path, a terrible mistake.
Lucas was right. I invested my time and trust in wrong people.
One of them was his biological mother who had lied to me since the very start.
“Sir, don’t worry. His anger will calm down soon. He’s only protective of his mother.‘ Kelly’s voice forced me to divert my gaze from the distant mountains to my old maid.
She was holding a cup of coffee.
“Thank you, Kelly. You still remember that I need a black coffee whenever I feel stressed over something.” I smiled taking the cup from her.
“I do remember everything and I am sorry that I also left without telling you, Sir. I was your employee and I breached the contract I signed before starting my work as your house help.” She looked guilty but I waved my hand.
“Kelly, I don’t think if the contract is still at the house. It no longer existed ever since you accepted us as your family and thank you for choosing them. They needed you more than I needed your service at my house.” I said.
There was a brief silence between us.
“It’s not place to ask you but what happened to Raelynn?”
