Madilyn’s accusation sent a ripple of uncertainty through the room. The voice in the video had been unmistakably Charles‘–anyone familiar with him would have recognized it instantly.
But… the Charles in the video had looked utterly ravaged. As Madilyn pointed out, he seemed on the very brink of death. When had Charles ever appeared so frail and ancient in public?
Was it truly an AI–generated fake? Technology was frighteningly advanced these days–voices, faces, everything could be synthesized. Perhaps both the visuals and the audio were fabricated.
“Chloe, the authenticity of this footage would need to be verified by a forensic expert,” Frank stated, his voice carrying weight. “In an age of deepfakes, we cannot accept such material at face value. This alone is insufficient to overturn a legally documented will.”
He wished to believe the person on screen was his old friend, but with synthetic media becoming so convincing, certainty was impossible. He couldn’t personally vouch for the video’s legitimacy.
If they accepted Chloe’s video as real, what was to stop another person from appearing tomorrow with an equally compelling, but completely fabricated, recording?
“He’s right. Frank makes a valid point—the video’s provenance is dubious. With today’s AI, creating such a thing is within reach. This isn’t conclusive evidence,” several family members agreed, reluctant to accept the implications of Chloe’s recording.
“It seems you won’t be convinced without something more tangible,” Chloe replied with a faint, knowing smile. She turned her focus to Arthur. “Arthur, do you believe this reflects your grandfather’s true intentions?”
Arthur was taken aback by the direct question. He looked at Chloe, but words failed him.
Internally, doubt had already taken root. The successive shocks had left his mind reeling; he no longer knew what to trust,
One of the two women before him was the love of his life, the one he longed to reconcile with. The other was his birth mother. Whose word should he take?
He was utterly lost.
Who could possibly guide him now?
“Chloe, your ‘evidence‘ isn’t enough to sway this gathering,” Madilyn declared coldly. “If you truly wish to challenge me, you’ll need something far more substantial. A video and a voice clip, no matter how convincing, do not constitute proof of Charles‘ final wishes. If you have nothing else, you will leave now. You are not welcome here.”

“Hah,” Chloe let out a soft, dismissive laugh. “I have a witness. Someone who can verify to everyone that what Charles said was genuine.”
A witness?
Madilyn’s eyes narrowed as she studied Chloe’s confident expression. Suddenly, she remembered the brief glimpse of a figure in the video–a man.
She hadn’t seen his face clearly, but his voice… how could she forget that voice? Wasn’t it the same man who always seemed to be hovering around Chloe?
What was his name again?
Eugene.
Yes, Eugene!
If Chloe and Eugene had produced this video together, it meant they had concocted it, didn’t it?
She had suspected something was off for a long time. Chloe and that man, Eugene, were definitely involved. Why else would someone like Lawrence have attended that celebration banquet? And that massive investment from Cosmos Group–wasn’t it all arranged by that man pulling strings from the shadows?
There was some kind of relationship, some kind of arrangement between them. He was her hidden benefactor, which explained why Chloe had been navigating recent events so smoothly and acting with such impunity.
That had to be it. Chloe–she had truly underestimated the girl’s resourcefulness.
