“Arthur, how can you do this?” Madilyn lunged to grab Arthur’s arm, but he took a slight, definitive step back, evading her touch.

“Madilyn, you must face the consequences for everything you’ve done. And I… I despise myself for being so blind, so foolish!” Arthur let out a bitter, self–mocking laugh, the accumulated shocks pushing his emotions to the brink.

“I am nothing but a joke.

“Hah!”

“Arthur, listen to me, let me explain my reasons-” Madilyn tried to press forward, but the police gave her no opportunity. Two officers moved in, firmly restraining her on either side, and the cold, metallic click of handcuffs echoed in the sudden quiet.

The moment the cuffs locked, Madilyn erupted–screaming, shrieking, and thrashing like a woman possessed.

Unfortunately for her, a strip of heavy–duty tape was promptly slapped over her mouth.

Landon stepped right up, tore off a piece with a sharp rip, and sealed her lips shut. After he was done, observing Madilyn’s muffled, furious struggles, Landon looked rather pleased with himself.

“Good grief, what a racket. Finally, some peace and quiet.” Landon glanced at the nearby officers and raised an eyebrow slightly. “My apologies, officers. Just a citizen assisting with keeping the peace.”

The officers offered no comment, simply taking hold of Madilyn’s arms to lead her away.

The man and woman still slumped on the floor began to struggle anew, ready to shout and cause another scene. But when they caught Landon’s gaze and saw him idly flexing the roll of tape in his hands, they immediately fell silent.

They were detained on charges including document fraud and corporate asset misappropriation. What awaited them was a long road of legal proceedings and almost certainly, prison time.

With Madilyn gone and her secret children removed, the hall finally settled into a heavy stillness. A long moment passed before anyone spoke.

“What matters most is that Charles is safe and well. Now that the poison has been cut out, everyone should be at ease.”

Frank’s words did much to lighten the suffocating tension in the room.

Charles gave a soft hum of acknowledgment and slowly raised a frail hand. “To everyone present, thank you for coming. I’m grateful you could be here for what was meant to be my final farewell.”

The mood gradually softened, with people beginning to step forward to offer Charles their relieved well-

wishes.

Charles gaze found Chloc and Eugene. He gestured gently with his hand. Chloe stepped forward and took his offered hand.

Charles seemed comforted, holding her hand as if reluctant to ever let go.

Noticing Eugene’s silent presence, Charles reached his other hand toward him.

Eugene stepped forward but did not immediately offer his hand.

Charles didn’t wait. He simply reached out and grasped Eugene’s hand himself.

A flicker of something passed over Eugene’s expression, but it was quickly replaced by his usual calm composure. He watched as Charles took his hand and placed it over Chloe’s, where it still rested in Charles

grip.
