Rhea listened to Hogan’s outburst and nodded quietly, her gaze shifting to Eugene.

Her husband had a point. Public opinion was a beast these days. If you didn’t handle it right, it could destroy everything.

Chloe was already a divorced woman with a child. If the extended Rosewood family caught wind of this, they’d turn on Eugene. And now this–the child wasn’t even from her marriage. The father was someone else entirely.

Chloe had told him she didn’t know either. The situation was complicated, and she hadn’t gone into it. He hadn’t pushed.

She’d trusted him enough to share what she had. That was enough. What difference would it make knowing? However it shook out, his feelings weren’t changing.

And if Robert wasn’t Arthur’s child, that actually made things simpler.

“Robert’s father is me.” Eugene’s voice was quiet but absolute. The words landed like stones, leaving both Hogan and Rhea stunned.

“What? Since when do you have a kid? I’d know if you had a kid!” Hogan was on his feet now.

“Eugene, don’t say things like that. The situation is messy enough without you making it worse.” Rhea’s voice was tight with worry.

Who volunteered for paternity like this? Being a stepfather was one thing. Claiming to be the father when you didn’t know the facts was something else entirely.
