Chapter 485 A Dinner Invitation
Chloe watched Charles disappear from view, noting how tired he’d seemed. After he left, she checked the time and noticed a message from Eugene sent just a minute ago. He was asking her to dinner, and mentioned there’d be a little surprise.
A faint smile tugged at her lips. She had to admit, she was curious about what he had planned.
She slipped her phone into her bag and was about to leave when Arthur’s voice stopped her.
“Chloe.”
She paused but didn’t turn around. Her voice stayed calm. “Arthur, it’s over now.”
Arthur took an instinctive step forward, afraid she’d just walk away without looking back. He almost reached for her hand, but she still hadn’t glanced his way.
The weight of that hit him hard. Made him feel hollow.
“Chloe, I’m sorry.” His voice was raw, genuine. “All these years… I did you wrong.”
“There’s nothing to apologize for.” A small smile crossed her face. “I used you too. You can’t force something that isn’t meant to work–it just plays out the way it’s supposed to. We were never right for each other. No point in pretending otherwise.” She paused. “I never blamed you.”
“Chloe, I-”
“Arthur, the company still needs you.” And with that, she walked away without looking back.
He stood there, watching her go, the words stuck in his throat.
He’d wanted to ask if there was ever a chance–if he could try again, somehow. But the way she’d walked off, so certain, so final… he knew he’d missed it. For good.
His grandfather had warned him. Over and over. And in the end, his own arrogance had cost him everything.
“Some failure you turned out to be,” he muttered to himself, a sharp pain slicing through his chest. He coughed, and blood spilled from his lips. His knees buckled, half–giving out.
“Mr. Myers!” Donald had just finished up with some paperwork and came looking for him. He rushed over when he saw Arthur on the ground,
Arthur raised a hand, stopping him. “I’m fine.”
Donald hesitated, worry etched on his face. “Mr. Myers, the online narrative’s completely flipped. Everyone’s apologizing to Ms. Lewis now.”
Arthur let out a weak laugh. “That’s her. Always has been. Bright as sunlight–you can’t look away
She walked slowly toward the table.
It was completely empty. On the cart, the dishes were all covered.
“Mr. Rosewood,” she said, amused. “What’s all this?”
Eugene cleared his throat, abandoned the cart, and walked over to her with an exaggeratedly gracious air. He pulled out her chair.
“Ms. Lewis. Please.”
She raised an eyebrow but said nothing, settling into the seat with easy elegance.
He arranged the tableware in front of her with careful attention, even unfolded a napkin and placed it gently on her lap.
Only then did he lift the covers from the dishes on the cart. Foreign cuisine, she noted–the presentation impeccable, the aromas drifting toward her the moment the lids came off.
Chloe relaxed, watching him move. There was something soothing about the way he handled everything. deliberate and unhurried.
When the table was set, Eugene untied the apron, set it aside, and took the seat across from her.
