Chapter 486 The Secret Chef
“Go ahead. Try them.”
Chloe hummed in response and began tasting the dishes one by one.
The onion soup was deep and rich. Better than anything she’d had before. Whoever ran the kitchen here had serious skill.
The beef bourguignon came from a perfect cut of meat, the sauce thick and velvety with just a whisper of wine running through it. The kind of dish that made you think about having it every single day. A true classic.
Every plate surprised her. There was even a bouillabaisse, fragrant with the flavors of the Mediterranean- complex, hard to describe, but undeniably good. It was the ocean in a bowl. How could it not be?
This place had taste. She knew it was an international chain, but she’d never realized they did Eldermaran cuisine.
“How is it?” Eugene asked.
Chloe paused, her lips parting slightly as she savored the last bite.
“Rich. Deep. I’ve had Eldermaran food before, but nothing like this.” She set down her fork. “The chef here deserves an award. Every dish is perfectly executed.”
Hearing that, Eugene nodded seriously. “High praise like that from you–I’m sure the chef would be thrilled. You should probably give him a bonus.”
“Absolutely. Anyone who puts this much care into their work deserves one.” Chloe smiled faintly. “Call him out. I’ll double the tip tonight.”
“Alright.”
Eugene seemed pleased with her answer. A soft smile played at the corners of his mouth as he set down his utensils and rose from his seat.
Chloe watched him, curious. What was he up to now?
He stopped beside her, one hand braced on the table, the other resting on the back of her chair. His frame seemed to surround her, close and warm.
“The chef who made all this is right here.” His voice dropped, low and smooth. “I don’t want a tip. R maybe I could have a different kind of reward?” He gave her that smile–the one that was pure charm and trouble all at once,
It hit her then. She’d been played.
“What kind of reward did you have in mind?” She tilted her head, smiling as she looked up at him, taking in the view.
The tension in his voice made her lower her own. “What happened?”
“Jennifer escaped.”
She listened as Charles filled her in. He’d already made arrangements to send Jenarth overseas–sent people to the estate to pick him up. But the kid was gone. Like he’d known they were coming and bolted first.
While Charles‘ men were searching for the boy, the station called. Jennifer, pregnant and unable to serve time in normal custody, had attacked the officers during transport and gotten away.
Both of them. Mother and son.
“Chloe, I’ve got people looking. Jenarth’s probably with her–otherwise we’d have found him by now. These two are trouble. We need to track them down before they become a bigger problem.” Charles hung up.
Chloe lowered the phone, her expression hardening.
He was right. Jennifer and her son weren’t the kind to just disappear quietly. They’d run, and they’d come back. And when they did, they’d come for her.
